Tremendous revision: great for sports law course
This is an excellent text for a comprehensive look at sports law. Professor Wong has made some excllent changes to his already successful Essentials text. The addition of five new chapters (including Antitrust, Labor, IP, Business: Structures, Tax and Employment, and Disabilities) from the second edition demonstrate that Wong is on the cutting edge of the intersection of law and sports. The shift in focus from solely amateur issues to the addition of professional sports law topics ensures that the text will be an invaluable resource for sports law courses on the undergraduate, graduate, and law school level. The narrative format of the book, with case notes at the end of each section, makes the book very readable. A quick correction
Just to let people know, the very nice Publisher's Weekly review contains a fairly serious error. The reviewer states: "In 1976, Yale rowers made headlines when they stripped nude, "Title IX" written across their chests and backs, to protest the cutting of sports of 'lesser importance,' like crew, in colleges across the nation. 'These are the bodies Yale is exploiting,' the men said in a written statement."

A Compelling Hard-Hitting Read
I just finished this book tonight, and it's one of the best sports autobiographies I've read in ages, and I read most of them. Wayne Embry is a pioneer, and a man that overcame a tremendous amount of racism and adversity in his life to become a power player (GM) of 2 NBA ballclubs.

Good Baseball Law
This is a good introduction to current baseball law. There are many areas covered and some that this baseball fan and law fan (by no means am I an attorney, though) that interested me. If you have wondered what goes on behind the scenes, give this book a read. It is easy to read and not at a "high-falutin'" level.

You don't need to be a lawyer to understand this book!
Anyone who enjoys the game of baseball can appreciate this book. We all hear about the current state of the industry, but few really understand how or why the status quo evolved. This book does a good job of providing a history of the antitrust exemption, free agency, and many other topics which still play a major role in the game today.

Legal side of the game made easy
Mr. Abrams' book is an easy to read journey through the history of legal proceedings in baseball.His knowledge about the law gave this book the potential to be hard to understand, but he clearly explains the law interms that any non-lawyer can understand.Read more

This is an EXCELLENT textbook
Highly recommend this to all law schools, agents and anyone interested in Sports Law.

GREAT GUIDE TO SPORTS AND THE LAW
The sports world is such a mystery and this book helps me understand it. Most books start out with a warm up of hey this is the law and blah,blah,blah...this books says hello want to become a sports agent right in the first chapter. I have to say this book does not intimidate me as a reader it is more of a guide to sports and the law. A must buy if you are even thinking about becoming a sports agent or sports paralegal.

I just recieved the book and I could not put it down!!!
I bought this book as research into the legal aspects of Sport that will help my career.It really opened my eyes to the liability and legal aspects which plague the sports marketplace.I am out of college but as a text book this is a very eye openning text, and give you a view of the sports business world from an insiders point of view.Read more

An eye opener
I enjoyed reading this book it tells the truth about the thugs that many Americans have idiolized simply because they play basketball.
They're no angels.
One of the consistent trends in modern American history is the progressive shrinking of the number of occupations in which those employed are exempt from public scrutiny.Used to be the President was above the fray, but Nixon and Watergate changed all that.Likewise, the fatherhood got tainted by the sex-abuse scandals starting in the 1980's.The occupation of NBA player has now succumbed to this trend, as books like these examine the seedy side of NBA life and its players.
Interesting book with a few flaws
This book flows in an easy reading style, but the book apparently wasn't carefully proofread, because there are a number of misspellings and incorrect wordings. That sends a message that if you don't care, why should I. As for the complaint that professional athletes are getting the primadonna treatment without accountability for bad behavior, I can only withhold my payment for a ticket to the game as punishment. Another book I read points out: have you ever noticed that people often complain to the wrong person or persons about something they have the power to change or resolve. One Law Professor's Take on the Problems in Professional Sports
Many of the major issues of modern professional sports revolve around issues of the law. Harvard's Henry J. Friendly professor of law Paul C. Weiler believes this firmly and "Leveling the Playing Field" is his attempt to explore this subject. Much of this terrain has been pursued in other works, but Weiler's perspective is interesting. Weiler takes the reader through the looking glass world of the sports business, exploring the nature of free agency, the various revenue streams of the major sports franchises, the long history of the shakedown for new sports complexes paid for with public money, the problems of steroids and other methods of cheating, and television and other revenues generated through sports activities. It is a familiar story, and Weiler tells it relatively well. His approach is balanced and his tone is evenhanded, even when the subject does not deserve it.
