2-0 out of 5 stars The IBC more than just another building code
The IBC is the long-time-coming consolidation of the three major building codes in the US and there is nothing "international" about it.Back in the 70's the 3 code organizations formed BOCA and put out a 1 & 2 family dwelling code. The 3 members them gradually made changes to the individual building codes that brought them into similar formats, then they combined them into one code in 2000, the IBC, and modified the dwelling code to be the IRC (Int. Residential Code)and changed the organization's name to the ICC, the Int. Code Council. There little to review about the content since it is either the law in your area or it is not.For comparisons to previous codes and other information try the ICC's website http://www.iccsafe.org/

2-0 out of 5 stars I'm not employed by a tax lawyer
This would probably be a great book for a law student, but not for a lay person. I consider myself to be fairly intelligent, but I had a bit of difficulty wading through this to find the little bit of info that I needed.I'm sure it's also a great book for someone with a tax background.

5-0 out of 5 stars Guantanamo, the inaccessible dungeon that brought infamy to the USA
As if guided by providence, this book has been published in the nick of time. In the glare of the Supreme Court's recent verdict against President Bush's authorizing and condoning the torture of Guantanamo prisoners, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, testifying today before the Senate, urged the senators to support the military tribunals established by the Bush White House to try the prisoners in secret. I truly wish this book were fiction, so that I might consider it merely a thought-provoking, witty and beguiling book, as humorous as Joseph Heller's "Catch 22".
5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR EVERY REAL AMERICAN
see through the baloney and propaganda and consider the serious crimes our current regime commits against justice, truth, and humanity.
5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone Who Cares About The Rule of Law Should Read This Book
"Guantanamo and the Abuse of Presidential Power" is a powerful and extraordinary book about the Bush Administration's attempt to create a law-free zone at Guantanamo, Cuba, where suspected terrorists could be held outside of judicial scrutiny and tortured for information on al-Qaeda.Anyone who cares about the U.S. Constitution, the law of war, our relationship with the Islamic world, or the successful prosecution of the war on terror should read this book. The revelations of Bush Administration incompetence and criminality are shocking.

5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding read for students and professionals alike
Crimes of War by Gutman and Rieff is simply in a league of its own. It is the first field guide of its kind and deserves the attention it is finally receiving (thanks to the photo of Angelina Jolie reading it.) It is logically organized alphabetically by war crime and each one has an article and photographs to accompany it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Unique
"Crimes of War" is a unique document. It provides a brief but illuminating look into what is broadly termed "international humanitarian law" or the laws of war.Expert journalists, historians, academics, military officials, and international activists provide vivid descriptions of various violations of international law as well as other issues and case studies; for example, "forced labor," "incitement to genocide," "aggression," "Chechnya," "civil war," etc.It is organized like an encyclopedia of human tragedy, basically. The photographs that accompany the entries are powerfully evocative of the suffering they represent, as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars "On Lawfare": Short and Focused
In the Shield of Achilles Phillip Bobbitt has recently written on the mutual relation between law and strategy. In the realm of emergency, the distinction between the two becomes relatively thin. Bobbitt's book demonstrates that at certain times, strategic "imperatives" have generated legal regimes. A point that Bobbit has overlooked, however, is the use of law as a strategic instrument. This is what might be called, not so much the instrumentalization, but the "weaponization" of law. In this short book, David Kennedy refers to what military commanders call "lawfare", the use of law, particularly humanitarian law, as a shield and a sword, by organized militaries, partisans, insurgents, and terrorists alike. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I knew that there was racial differences in the Second World War, and frankly it didn't surprise me that there was a disparity in executions between black and white in WWII. I though I would be reading a history of some of these accounts. Instead what I read was someones polemic against the United States Army's justice system. I was also expecting a history professor from Duke to get her facts straight. On page 17 she claims that a French destroyer crossed the channel with the USS Arizona. The last I checked the USS Arizona was sunk on December 7th 1941 in Pearl Harbor and is still there. Her second mistake comes when she describes Captain Whittington's decorations and campaign ribbons. On page 120 she describes his North American Campaign ribbon as having a bronze arrowhead attachment signifying involvement in the Normandy invastion. I know for a fact that while investigating my grandfathers campaign medals from WWII that the American Campaign medal was issued for 30 days service in the United States. The European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal was given for service in the ETO. Therefore his bronze arrowhead would be on his European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon and not on his North American Campaign Ribbon. Such mistakes are unforgiveable for a university history teacher, and for any editor who should at least know that the USS Arizona was sunk at Pearl Harbor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superlative History
Kaplan has written a unique book that combines history, literary biography, investigative journalism, courtroom drama, and personal memoir. The miracle is that she blends these genres so effortlessly in a book as compelling and beautifully written as French Lessons and The Collaborator.
5-0 out of 5 stars The French Perspective
The issue of the death penalty being applied more often to African Americans in the armed services in WWII should not surprise Americans, but thank goodness it did surprise Louis Guilloux. Kaplan has given readers a special French perspective on an ugly chapter in American history. Through both solid research into government archives and first-hand visits and interviews, she has given the Guilloux novel, OK JOE, which she has translated, a companion history that, I believe, Guilloux would have appreciated. Don't miss her excellent footnotes.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Great Air Power Innovator
The Air Force is the brashest arm of the armed forces. It is far newer than the Army or Navy, and more reliant on the latest in technology. There is an image of the flyboy as handsome, heroic, and rule-bending if not rule-breaking.The archetype of such an image is General Billy Mitchell, whose most famous act was getting a court-martial in 1925 for speaking up about how he felt air power ought to be developed. His is a story that has been told before, even (badly) in the movies, but in _A Question of Loyalty: Gen. Billy Mitchell and the Court-Martial that Gripped the Nation_ (HarperCollins), Douglas Waller has retold the story with a wealth of new information and the help of the Mitchell family.Mitchell's story was a sensation during his trial, and as part of the universal drama of the iconoclastic genius against the system, presents issues for current times, besides being a lesson in how big organizations change or resist change.
4-0 out of 5 stars A very good biography of a controversial person
This is a very good biography of one of the 20th century's controversial figures; Army General Billy Mitchell. Prior to his court-martial in 1925, Mitchell had served in combat in the Spanish-American war and rose to Brigadier General in World War I as Pershing's Air Commander. Mitchell is best remembered for his demonstration of aircraft sinking a battleship. The movie "The Court- martial of Billy Mitchell" staring Gary Cooper glamorized the sinking and the court-martial. The battle ship was stationary and it took two days and many bombs to sink it. But, Mitchell proved correct about the vulnerability of capitol ships, as demonstrated in World War II. Mitchell liked to live the good life and to supplement his income, he did a lot of writing that cut against the grain of the mind set of the military commanders. What really got him in trouble was his press release after the disastrous loss of the airship Shenandoah and the loss of a Navy seaplane attempting a nonstop flight from San Diego to Hawaii. His press release was so scathing of the military command, there was no option but a court-martial for insubordination. Mitchell had many good ideas, but he went about pushing them forward the wrong way. He had a big mouth and no patience and in the end, got what he deserved.
4-0 out of 5 stars Aviation History
In another century another age we forget how far American aviation history and the American military has progressed since the World War I era.Waller creates a vivid picture of the Billy Mitchell trial during the period that gripped the nation. The book provides interesting background on the man who challenged the Washington establishment and gives a view of military policy and capability just before and after World War I.Given the amount and length of the trial material Waller does a good job of presenting the both sides evenly.Mitchell was a compelling but flawed man who argued for an aviation future while living values more akin to his time. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Martial Law is not that scary
I have the 2nd Edition (1992), which probably dated compared to the 4th Ed. Comprehensive introductory comparison between civilian law and UCMJ. It helps to know a little about civilian law and procedure, which, unfortunately, is almost impossible even for licensed trial lawyers to understand (judges and prosecutors are "trial lawyers" too). This book does help break the brainwashing perped by a lying "news" media and Hollywood disinfotainment, and gives useful advice to NEVER trust police, and NEVER speak with police, and to first speak with a lawyer you can trust. Unfortunately, most people never read a law book until it's too late to do much good. This should be required reading for every person before they enlist. Every person should have a law library anyway, for self-defense, since every person must look out for themselves versus criminals and/or government, and EVERY person is robbed by both every year (especially if they don't even know it). There are many areas skipped in the 2nd Ed, like VA benefits being stolen by VA for 100% of disabled retirees (steal either pension or disabilty). Also, vaccine waivers must be signed on first day of enlistment ONLY (US Census reported 320,000 disabled Gulf War Vets as of Census 2000, plus 35,000 dead is reported from gulfwarvets.com). There are, of course, massive areas of law ignored/censored by the authors, especially frauds perped by courts, as in most other "mainstream" law texts. This, fortunately, does not detract from the book, since that other information is available to those to work hard to seek it out. 2nd Ed has good explanation of pretrial strategy for choosing which tunnel in the infinite maze. Since General Tommy Franks was quoted in December 2003 that he wants martial law in USA today, perhaps all US citizens will need this book soon, after all US courts are shut down and replaced by military Civil Affairs courts-martial. ...
