5-0 out of 5 stars Wrightslaw: Special Education Law
As a parent of a child with autism, I have faced many struggles.5-0 out of 5 stars Wrightslaw: Special Education Law
This book is a must have if you have a child with special needs. It is the most comprehensive book around for helping your child get an education!I call it my special education bible. If you can only afford one book to help you through the special education maze, this is the ONE to buy!5-0 out of 5 stars The one book to buy
This book is extremely well written, concise and incredibly practical. As a parent of a special needs child, my copy is dogeared with tons of stickies coming out the sides and highlighted paragraphs throughout. The unraveling of caselaw portions and the clear writing style help you understand the nuances of special ed law, expectations you can have, how to be smarter in and out of an IEP meeting, and how not to be bushwacked. It has the good stuff, but doesn't skip on the real language either. Well balanced with nothing fluffy. I'd rather lose my dayrunner than my copy of Wrightslaw. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Way overpriced
First off, this book is waayyyy overpriced. There are other good books on the market at half the cost. And there are other books that are better written, too.I was surprised at the sloppy writing of this new edition. If you are intent on buying this book, find a used copy of the last edition, which is better, or choose one of the better books out there.Don't go by ratings alone.Check out the book in your local bookstore first, just to be sure you find one that meets your needs. The information is this book can be found on the Internet on different sites, so there is no needed to shell out hard-earned dollars for this one.Find something else and you won't be sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars From a mom with a son with Tourette Syndrome
Whether you are new to the world of "special ed" or you are a seasoned veteran, attorney, Lawrence M. Siegel's book will guide you through the advocacy maze with ease. It is a valuable resource of information, including, but not limited to: an overview of special ed and the IEP process; sample IEP forms and letters; organization and planning tips; a listing of support groups, advocacy organizations and federal and state departments of education. Laws and procedures change frequently, and regulations can be different from state to state, so new editions are printed periodically. You can even take advantage of an "update service" that offers a 35% discount on any future purchases.4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview, but doesn't replace having an advocate/lawyer
This guide provides a good overview of the special education and IEP process, as well as some sample forms and letters. It also usefully collects the relevant federal statutes and regulations. But I found the descriptions of the process to be quite different from what happens here in D.C., so that ultimately its utility was somewhat limited. There is, perhaps, no solution to this -- the book can't be written for every school district in the country. So while the book is useful, in many areas you will be well served to hire a special ed consultant and/or attorney. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for University Administrators
Kaplin & Lee's "The Law of Higher Education (Third Edition)" was the required text for a graduate course, "Legal Aspects of Higher Education" and should be present on the bookshelf of any university administrator. The book's subtitle, "A Comprehensive Guide to Legal Implications of Administrative Decision Making," is wholly accurate in describing the scope and utility of this massive tome (over 1,000 pages from cover to cover).

5-0 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL IN THE HOSTILE NCLB ERA
as we see schools labor under a system designed for failure, the same business model which has bankrupt the once mighty GM corporation by seeking endlessly expanding horizons of AYP, in which teachers suffer similar mal-practice suits as doctors and suffer other liabilities and empty self-interested accusations of misconduct, in which schools face a myriad labrynth of hostile and near vindictive legislation, this tome serves as essential ally for every educator and must be read and fully memorized.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE! - Knowledge is truly power!
This book is awesome! If you have a child that receives special education services you NEED this book!! This book is full of the answers I have been looking for, for the last 4 years.I have read it twice and will read it again. This is an easy read it is broken down into 5 sections that everyone can understand. My favorite is section #3 The Parent as Expert. I used this section along with the others to get my son ESY services and 1:1 reading remediation.
5-0 out of 5 stars A "must read" for every parent with a special ed. classified child
As if being confronted with the diagnosis of a learning or developmental disability in your child wasn't stressful enough, upon diagnosis and classification, a parent is thrown into the ocean that is special education and the bureaucratic nightmare that goes along with it.This book is a treasure trove of strategies - everything from managing your paperwork to managing your emotions with respect to special education is covered."The best way to avoid due process is to assume and prepare for due process"and "treat your relationship with the school personnel as a marriage with no possibility of divorce" are two of the most powerful "Wrightisms" I came away with and have served us well in advocating for our children with autism.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend this Awesome Book!!!
This book is a wonderful asset for parents who are advocating for their kids. Many times I have let my emotions control my dealings with the school and this book explains why that is detrimental to your childs education.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best books ever written
This is certainly the best book ever written -- the best book that ever will be written -- about race, law and American society. It is a remarkably insightful history and one of the most stunning existing examples of narrative journalism. It is a masterpiece.

5-0 out of 5 stars Moving and Informative
I'm a fan of nonfiction works and this easily moved to my top 5 favorite books. When I was growing up there were no courses on the contributions blacks made to America. There was no black history month. And I was cheated.I'm a 50+ white woman who lived through desegregation and had no clue that it was a struggle.I honestly don't remember a time when my elementary classes were all white but they must have been.I do remember clearly when my elementary class stopped being all white. That was when Richard Harris became my Batman buddy. On the aftenoons following the show we would go to the neighborhood soda shop and have a coke and discuss all the action of the previous evening's show and check for new Batman bubble gum cards with the intensity that only 5th graders can bring to such an important endeavor. It felt normal to chat Batman with Richard; and I'm so sorry for all the children that had such a dumb practice as segregation rob them of those moments.
5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling and original arguments and a fresh analysis of America's black & white race relations
I just finished this book, A Simple Justice, and it is fantastic. It's the story of Brown vs. The Board of Education of Topeka, which is the landmark Supreme Court case that desegregated compulsory public schools in America. But it's so much more than that. After reading this book, I felt almost ashamed of my previous ignorance to the struggles and condition of black america at the hands of almost everyone else in the country. It is comprehensive in its scope and perspicacious in its analysis, sparing no feelings on either (or rather, any) side.I believe myself to be, for the most part, a judicious man when it comes to philosophical or sociological observations, but Kluger was able to open my eyes to angles I had previously missed on issues I thought I had resolved long ago.So if you're not too scared of big books, this one's worth the time. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars NOT worth the money
I was asked to read this relatively expensive book before my one-week intro to law class.I am not impressed. It seems very dry and very basic and mostly tells you what you will learn in the first year.Well, I plan to finish my first year so I suppose I will learn everything they want me to know.I have no fear of law school, so maybe I'm biased. There are also several pages dedicated to grammar.Useful enough, but hardly information that is going to allow me to attack law school without fear.Oh, and if you don't have a BASIC understanding of the purpose of the US Constitution (as included in this book, along with advice like being prepared for class), maybe you should reconsider attending law school. Please, please, please, go to a library and look at this book.If you feel you still need it at that point, buy a used copy.It won't be heavily used.3-0 out of 5 stars A little dull
There is interesting and valuable information in this book, but the presentation -- the writing -- is about as dull as you can find.I would recommend it as supplemental material, but not your first read prior to law school.I can recommend "Acing You First Year Of Law School" by S.C. Noyes & H.S. Noyes. It touches on the same material, but the writing is leaner and far more approachable. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Special Education Law with Cases
I am impressed with this book and am considering using it as a text book for my legal issues in special education course. The book serves to personalize the abstract concepts of the law and allows individuals to connect concepts with scenarios. The breakout of the various chapters and case studies reflects those issues of special education law that are critical to the professional practice of teachers. The one drawback to the book is that each of the case study chapters is based on a subject of law, but the subject is not presented. It remains up to the reader to determine the concept of law from the interpretation of the case.All-in-all I found this book to present an insightful and thoughtful approach to common issues of special education that are directly impacted by the process of law. ...
