Excellent resource, but guidance was helpful
Teachers and the Law (6th Edition) was the primary text used for my National-Louis University (Wheeling, IL) School Law course. Although the text implies that only information regarding teachers will be discussed, Fischer actually covers legal issues that deal with many levels of educational law including student cases, administrator cases, and even cases that don't involve teachers at all, but loosely relate to educational law in general.

I received the book in good shape.The cover looked next to new and there were very little marks or highlights in the text.

A Must Read for Teachers
Case law, unless done perhaps by the likes of John Grissam, is not page turning material.However, the authors have done an incredible job of putting very pressing and often complex areas into an accessible and engaging book.Written in an easy to use question and answer format, the updated book touches on education legal issues ranging from free speech, to students with disabilities, to internet issues.While of great use for educator (or educators to be), the book could also easily be adapted for classroom use, either as a debate or research starter.Worth every penny of its price. ... Great Quality

Almost Painless Public School Law
This Sixth Edition of American Public School Law is a comprehensive treatment of noteworthy public school case law that also serves to outline the history of our country. It's user friendly, while not lowering the bar for comprehension. Legal lingo is left intact, but translations are offered for those of us who are reading it for School Law classes, as opposed to Law School classes. There's a useful glossary, and a handy index for locating specific topics, and the cases that illustrate them. This is a book you'll want to keep.

Public School Court Cases
I ordered the book for my graduate class. It contains landmark court cases and rulings dealing with public school issues in all U.S. states. It is a great source for public school administrators and basically an easy read for those who have never had a law class.

Good solid book for both lawyers and educators.
This book is a must-have for educators. Since the push for inclusion means many students with disabilities are entering regular schools and classrooms with their peers, it is of great worth that the regular teacher as well as the special education teachers know the background of the laws that pertainto these students with diverse needs. It would be beneficial to bothstudents, teachers, and parents to know and understand how the laws areapplied in court, what an IEP is, what is expected of the teachers, andwhat can be expected of the students. I have the other major law books ondisability laws, but this one is more geared toward other participants inthe process besides lawyers. It is very readable and very understandablewithout having to go to law school to get a background in law first. Isuggest this or rather recommend this to my friends and students who areinterested in working with those with disabilities in regular schoolsettings. I think there are better books to use
This book is not for the person just getting an intiation into school law.It is too condense and only gives blurbs of the verdicts in each case by quoting the appellate and US supreme court judges which are oft times convoluted, the author leaves out an indepth explanation of the nuts and bolts.I refer to this book as the Reader's Digest version of school law.Also, the print is microscopic which is really hard on the eyes.

This is THE book to read if you are Law School bound
I wasted my money on other books. The biggest waste of money was Law School Confidential. By Law in a Nutshell and don't waste your money on other books. It was terrific! It was even humorous.

A MUST HAVE
If you are an educator, you must own this book, for the good of your students, and your own legal protection.

Not as helpful as I thought
I bought this book thinking it would help me to understand what the schools know, only to find out that the Department of Education has not yet released the regulations. My district now tells me these federal regulations are what our state uses to make determinations on their own regulations. So while this book does give information about the law (and as another reviewer stated, it can be found on the Internet for free), it does not directly address federal or state regulations, since they have not yet been created. So, I found the book only marginally helpful, thus two stars for a good effort.

Excellent book.
I whole heartedly agree with the other review.This is an excellent book, because it shows what the OLD law was like vs the new law.This has helped me tremendously.Normal parents can read this and understand...you do not need a law degree to "get it."It is very user friendly. I also agree that From Emotions To Advocacy is a MUST have book for any parent in the special education system.

Great reference for every educator and lawyer in education.
If I could have given this book 4 and a half stars I would have done so. The only complaint that I have about this tome is that many of the court cases that I am interested in are not printed in part or entirety in this book. I will have to go to the law library to get the rest of the information that I need. This book was not in my law classes, but rather in a class for school administrators. I am writing on and very interested in the legal history of education, and this was a great find for me. Not only does it give pertinent information about all educational law, but the specific references and legal issues are there for gender and race discrimination in schools, busing, special education, etc. Any teacher, researcher, or lawyer in this field cannot just pick up a book that is only on their area such as special education, because the full information is not there nor does it make sense out of context of legal history. In order to understand the reason why Congress and courts saw the need to coin a new law (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) rather than rely upon previous ammendments to other laws such as the Civil Rights Act and other education acts in the 1960's it is vital that the reader know the history and how those ammendments failed to guarantee educational rights for those with disabilities.
