This is the first book I read on Asperger's, and I am glad that it was.Tony Attwood is one of the leading experts on Asperger's.He really gets it and doesn't try to fit an Asperger child into a nt understanding of the world, but goes to the Asperger world.It has really helped me understand myself and my children better.Well done!I can't wait to see more from him.

At the very top of my list
My son was found with some type of High Functioning Autism about two months ago. I'm a physician and behavioral researcher, though not in the area of autism or anything related to children or developmental disorders. I've read many books, scientific texts, online publications... you name it, in the past weeks. I've obtained very valuable information from all of them. This book does not go into the details of genetics or the neurological issues around Autism, in which I'm deeply interested, but I got that from other sources. However, it was from this book that I could draw a clear plan of action for my son and my family. Mr. Atwood must be a very smart and practical person. So far, of all that I've read, I'd put this book at the top, with the much more academic though less practical textbook on AS by Klin, Volkmar and Sparrow.

Review on Children with Disabilities
This text was great.I was very impressed with the thoroughness of the info. and found it to very informative for my class.I went in with a wealth of knowledge for sure

Excellent resource
This reference book covers developmental, clinical, educational, family, and intervention issues of concern to teachers working with children with disabilities. Written by doctors, it thoroughly explores issues than impact child development starting from conception through adulthood. Factors that can cause disabilities, current methods of treatment, commonly used medications, and guidelines for intervention are addressed. Solid Introductory Book
Batshaw's Children with Disabilities is a "must have" book for anyone who works with children with disabilities...almost.Written by doctors for those in the medical professional most of the recommendedinterventions come from a decidedly medical model.It is, on the otherhand, fairly comprehensive with sections dealing with genetics,development, developmental disabilities, and interventions with the bulk ofthe book dealing with specific disabilities from the obscure (Fragile XSyndrome) to the more common (AD/HD).I have not found Appendix A or Bparticularly useful (Glossary and Syndromes of Inborn Errors of Metabolism)but turn to Appendix C and D frequently (Commonly Used Medication andResources for Children with Disabilities) Finally, while the book offers anice mix of theory and application, I would like to see (maybe in a 5thEdition?) the incorporation of some of the so-called "new brainresearch."Nevertheless, I still turn to this book several times eachmonth. ... My Favorite Book on Multicultural Psychology
I bought this book years ago when it first came out.It remains my favorite text on multicultural psychology, and it has plenty of clinical insights that I've never found elsewhere.Apparently, it didn't become a classic, but it SHOULD have, along with it's companion, "Meanings of Madness."I think it is just a little too brilliant and insightful to fit easily into the standard, stale multicultural zeitgeist.

Good not Great
I would have given this book a five star rating, but it did not include two important SSA forms. The forms are sent to a claimant when his/her file is sent to the state office fordevelopment. These two forms are SSA-3373-BK (Function Report- Adult) and SSA-3380-BK (Function Report-Adult-Third Party). The two forms have to do with your Activities of Daily living, and when received have a 10 day return time. The forms can be found on the net, but you have to know they exist.

Variety of topics
It's a handle book that has many different topics to help your child or student.

great book
I found this book to be very helpful in working with students both individually and in groups.I used the activities for students ages K-5.Everyone enjoyed the activities, and the structure of the lessons helped me to guide discussions and have questions prepared to ask even on the busiest of days!

An excellent book for higher functioning special folks.
I found this book to be extremely helpful for my highly-functioning autistic child.It covers a vast range of situations and involves the student in thinking about solutions and coming up with their own answers.I like it so much that I'm buying one for one of his teachers as well.It is geared to higher functioning students -- others could use this as a framework and simplify things a bit, or try Carol Gray's book "The New Social Story Book" which is written much more simply and directly.It's also an excellent book, but was too simple for my needs. ... This book is exactly what the title says it is.
This book discusses what needs to be done to ensure success in the workplace. Including a hands-on working assessment; providing structure all day; one on one training. It explains what must be considered; what does, or can the person do; what do they enjoy doing; do well; what is available to work at; what behavioural problems exist; what motivates the person; what kind of support will be needed. I've been looking for a book like this for quite some time.Here's what it covers:
Excellent resource!
No parent OR special education teacher should be without this book!Easy to read, and the content is excellent!Step-by-step approaches to teaching everyday skills to children with special needs, but would be just as valuable to ANY parent!After reading this book, I have found it easier to establish goals for my students and everyone is using the same approach to teaching everyday living skills (play, toileting, self-help, PLUS behavior management)!It is working fabulous!The students are learning more with less frustration!A must-have for your resource library!

Very Educational
This was one book I did not hesitate to buy as I know so many people with the mental illnesses.
A caring and compassionate work
The former First Lady's book is a very compassionate effort which can help a person who has to deal with mental illness for the first time no matter what the setting.Mrs. Carter gives a good over-view of the "wholepicture" concerning all mental illness with enough detail to give thereader a good foundation in the subject.I think the really profound thingthat I read in every line of the book was the real sincerity that Mrs.Carter has for her work.She really is serious about changing the way somein society look at individuals with mental illesses.I applaud her for herwork and her book.
