5-0 out of 5 stars Families, Illness and Disability: an integrative treatment m
John Rolland's book taps into the intersectional and ever changing relationship of illness, family, and time.Rolland presents a thorough and well-organized theory and framework for clinicians to use for assesssment and treatment.Rolland reaches his purpose in the provision of a highly developed and sensitive model that surpasses other models that are stagnant and unidimensional.Rolland "educates" the reader through use of charts, visual illustrations, case examples, and sample questions. This enhances the learning experience of the reader.Rolland fortifies social work by presentation of a model that accentuates the nature of social service; looking at the broad implications of change over time and the adaptability or "stuck" that a family may experience in relation to disability or illness.he recognizes the difference in "family" and the stigma of illness or disability. His weakness comes out of the very nature of the family life cycle as a traditional role in the dominant society.Rolland finishes his masterful book with a piece de resistance; the guided experience of exploration of personal values and healthcare experiences and the impact upon professional practice.Overall, Rolland's book delivers what the author and reader expect and more. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Quite an argument
This book is a historical exploration into the question of how the deaf should be educated, through sign or through oral speech.I wouldn't call it "a comprehensive history of the deaf" as advertised on the back of the book, and I wouldn't even call it "the history of relations between the society of hearing-speaking people and the community of deaf-signing people" as Lane suggests in his foreword. The book stays almost exclusively on the topic of education for the deaf, which in itself is quite interesting.4-0 out of 5 stars Definite must for all who become involved with the deaf.
As a deaf person who has struggled long and hard to get my PhD in science and science education, this book with its history comes as no surprise to me. Harlan Lane is a hearing person who has taken up the cause of those in the deaf world with a vengence, and I do mean with a vengence! Dr. Lane has a tendency to write with immense vigor and sometimes his books tend to go overboard in stating the case. However, this book is a classic and is definitely one of his best written ones. 5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this book
I picked this book up after reading Oliver Sacks's When the Mind Hears, and I am very glad I did. Without it, I might very well be blind to one of the world's most infuriating injustices: the attempt to gloss over deafnessand discredit sign language. Moreover, the book is beautifully written andprovides tons of information on the people and places involved. Everyoneshould read this book, because everyone who does will be motivated to helpright the situation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "On Lawfare": Short and Focused
In the Shield of Achilles Phillip Bobbitt has recently written on the mutual relation between law and strategy. In the realm of emergency, the distinction between the two becomes relatively thin. Bobbitt's book demonstrates that at certain times, strategic "imperatives" have generated legal regimes. A point that Bobbit has overlooked, however, is the use of law as a strategic instrument. This is what might be called, not so much the instrumentalization, but the "weaponization" of law. In this short book, David Kennedy refers to what military commanders call "lawfare", the use of law, particularly humanitarian law, as a shield and a sword, by organized militaries, partisans, insurgents, and terrorists alike. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Idea
I was excited about the workbook concept, because I hoped it would be more helpful than just reading other peoples advice, but because I am the sort of person who thinks about things quite a lot anyway I found that completing the workbook didn't really tell me anything I didn't already know. However, if you want to be provided with a structure for sitting down and seriously thinking about your past experiences of work, this book may help you to understand yourself and find the direction that best suits your needs and abilities... just don't expect it to tell you. If you have no work experience, such as a school leaver, you could still use this book, but I wouldn't recommend it. You could end up focusing too much on the only past experience you have i.e. the education system, and I think you might find that limiting. The book also includes a section covering the issues involved, and is written by a man with Asperger syndrome himself.

5-0 out of 5 stars If You Have Asperger's, This Book Will Work For You
This is the book adults on the autism/Asperger's (a/A) spectrumhave been praying for. This book is every adult with Asperger's best friend in employment related matters.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for AS adults who are mid-career.
This book is excellent and very useful for adults with AS or professionals who work with them.I did not find it very helpful, however, for young adults who are just beginning to enter work. This book would be much more useful for adults who are already employed or have been employed for extended periods. For those people, I believe this book is excellent, helpful, easy to work through, and well-written.But if you are looking for something to help an adolescent or young adult with AS, this may contain a few tips, but it probably won't be very helpful. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Haunting
The story of Auschwitz is often taught in today's schools as that of a concentration camp erected during the Second World War that witnessed one of the world's worst genocides - the slaughter of one million innocent Jewish souls.
5-0 out of 5 stars Harrowing and powerful
This book is a fascinating, enlightening, and moving history of one of the most infamous of the Nazi concentration camps. Rees doesn't just explain the history of the camp itself, he frequently ties it into the "big picture," the things happening elsewhere in the world and how they affected the camp, and sometimes vice versa. This big picture focus really makes the book, showing how everything in interrelated and how even the distant Allied nations affected Auschwitz's development throughout the war.
5-0 out of 5 stars Easily accessible and reader-friendly
This was my first attempt to learn about Auschwitz and I was very pleased with the book. The author explains the entire history of the camp without getting bogged down in any single aspect of the story. If you are a casual history buff like me, this book is a winner. The first-hand accounts of survivors and the SS men who worked at Auschwitz are amazing. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Cold, Hard, Facts of The War in Vietnam
Twenty-five years after the fall of Saigon, The Center For National Security Law of the University of Virginia Law School hosted a seminar designed to determine the "real" lessons of the Vietnam War.In doing so they assembled a distinguished team of twenty-one scholars, each an acknowledged expert in his field. The results were then compiled and published in this work. The conclusions reached included, but were not limited to the following:Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the most recent version
Its a fine book but what I found out after I recieved it is that its keyed to the First Edition not the most recent edition. So its missing a few cases.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not helpful really.
This is the worse of the High Court Case Summaries. I loved the one for Employment Law, but this one is filled with anecdotes about the author's personal opinion on matters such as the federal government's lack of concern for thift, and other broad, uninformed generalizations a law student could do without. Not to mention at least one WRONG holding in the PG & E case. West should recall this book, and hire someone else to do the next one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Supplement, So much better than legalines
The High Court Case Summaries are great commercial brief books, but have much better features than legalines. They provide a more concise brief and usually keep them to one page instead of the legalines who bunch all of their material together. The also have the quick facts and memory image as well as a black letter law and definitions section. I wish they had a high courts case summary book for all my classes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully touching
What beautiful writing! It's pointed out in the intro that, more than most of us, her world was shaped with WORDS. I've only read about four essays so far, and am profoundly touched. I've always admired Helen Keller, but am newly re-impressed with her wisdom and vision, and touched that she can write so clearly as to make me feel how little she felt limited by her handicap. If Helen Keller had simply learned to behave and ask politely for her food, etc, it would have been an impressive accomplishment. The fact that she grew to fully embrace her intelligence, her world and her potential . . . wow. I know so many people who are content to just do the bare minimum, to not stretch their limits at all, to not show any intellectual curiosity . . . she had the perfect excuse to exert the least effort, yet she didn't. Once she was given the key, the entree to humanity, she didn't let her handicaps stop her. I love that even all these years later, she is still able to share that. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helped my 11-year old daughter with her feelings
My 11 year old daughter read this book and even asked if she could read some of "her favorite essays" to us - she is the older sibling of our 2 year old little girl who was born 17 weeks early and she has cerebral palsy, blindness, deafness, is tube-fed and chronically ill.Her favorite stories were of the ones that she could most relate to - like the little boy who said he did not understand why his sibling was so ill when she was born.I think it made my daughter feel like it was okay for her to have bad and good emotions about her little sister.I think it validated them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for everyone.
Donald Meyer has compiled a wonderful book of essays from siblings of disabled children. My thirty year old son bought me this book for my birthday. Growing up, I too was one of these children and would have truly benefitted from anything that would have explained what happened to our family. As one of these sibs, I had to grapple with guilt, embarassment and also neglect from my parents due to the resources, both financial and emotional that were poured into my sister's handicap. My heart goes out to both parents and siblings of exceptional children. It is so much pain to bear for them and they feel even worse about complaining because they are "normal."

5-0 out of 5 stars Now this is what I call the perfect book for siblings!
My 8 year old son loves reading me stories written by other siblings. Each story describes how challenging and rewarding it is to have a sibling with special needs. Thanks to all the wonderful kids who wrote in.My son is going to write his own story just for our family!
