5-0 out of 5 stars SHOULD BE MANDATORY READING FOR LAW SCHOOL ADVOCACY CLASSES
In my 40 years of trial practice, few books are better organized, or present more useful insights in how to try cases.David Berg has been in the pits, has dozens of verdicts in all kinds of civil and criminal cases-everything from murder to patent infringement-and writes about them very well.Drawing on his experience, David explains the importance, goals, and methods of achieving those goals, for each step of representation, from the first meeting with the client, to the final words of closing argument. And while this isn't one of those "war story" book, he does use examples from his own cases and those of other trial lawyers to make his points. This book is a "must read," not just for aspiring trial lawyers, but for all who want to enhance their skills in the courtroom. It should be mandatory reading for law school advocacy classes.
5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ!
Each arena has it's Michael Jordan. In the courtroom, it is David Berg. And Berg has taken this natural talent and time-honed skill to a new level as he unlocks certain secrets that have catapulted him to the top of his profession. What most have considered his "magic," he explains as common sense practice. This book should be a required text at every law school. Those in the legal profession should not just read this, they should study it.The difference it will make in case results more than pays for the book, over and over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very highly recommended advice guide
David Berg is a member of the Texas and New York State Bar Associations and the founding partner of Berg & Androphy, who has published dozens of articles about legal issues in such venues as "Litigation Magazine", "The New York Times", and "Newsweek". In The Trial Lawyer: What It Takes To Win, Berg draws upon his years of experience and expertise to create a straightforward instructional and reference guide which ranges from perfecting techniques for arguing a case in court; to getting the research right; to the art of persuasion; to recognizing how to best address a particular jury, Voir Dire; specific tips, tricks, and techniques for all aspects of presenting the actual trial; and more. The Trial Lawyer is a very highly recommended advice guide and strongly recommended reading for aspiring and newly practicing trial lawyers alike. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Inside Scoop
In this insightful and yeomanly researched book, Karen Donovan paints a vivid picture of a man who has achieved iconic status among America's trial lawyers. Thanks to the access granted the author by David Boies, we get not only a ringside seat for some of the last decade's most high-profile trials, including, of course, the one that put the current occupant of the White House in office, but we're there for pre-trial strategy sessions and post-trial dinners as well. Throughout, Donovan maintains a keen-eyed objectivity and isn't afraid to deflate balloons of bravado when need be. All in all, it's a compelling read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Author captures essence of multi tasking trial lawyer
Most of pieces of Boies border on idolatry. Donovan's work is special because although she clearly admires Boies and his work, she also points out his faults. The best reading in the book includes her digging behind the scenes to reveal what really happens in trials, settlements, and negotiations. While Boies is obviously one of the top trial lawyers in America, he often gets credit for things which areactually the result of other events. Donovan captures this wonderfully. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Brief, Clear, & Comprehensive, but Inevitably Superficial
Cicero taught that two of the three essential qualities of advocacy were brevity and clarity.David Ross's book has achieved those two qualities admirably, but by attempting to be too comprehensive the book inevitably suffers from superficiality.Ross makes many statements that the capable, experienced practitioner would wholeheartedly endorse, but he makes them in such a way that the inexperienced pratitioner will most likely miss the point. If they recognize the point, they may be insufficiently informed to be able to implement the suggestion.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must have" for any up and coming young lawyer
This book was suggested to my Advanced Trial and Evidence class in lawschool.I decided to pick up a copy to see if it would really be worthwhile for my future practice since I want to litigate. It is excellent from what I have read so far. Many of us were shown or told how to do or say certain things in pretrial and trial litigation class. This book is not only a good reminder, but it has many other practical and entertaining ideas that I'm sure to use in my future practice.A "must have!" ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Collins KNOWS this stuff
Each year Section 1983 litigation makes up by far the bulk of the civil work of federal courts.Section 1983 has produced some of the most confused and confusing doctrine in the law, largely because it operates at the frontiers of some very serious conflicts between competing and perhapsirreconcilable constitutional mandates.Collins, a professor at Tulane LawSchools, KNOWS this material better than most of the judges who will decide1983 cases every day.He practiced in the area for a number of years, andteaches a course specifically on 1983 at Tulane (as well as civil procedureand federal courts courses). He's also one of the clearest writers you'llfind in West's Nutshell Series.Make no mistake, this material is tough, and it's extremely helpful having someone as bright as Collins guiding youthrough it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST HEARSAY BOOK OUT THERE !!!!!
This book is the sleeper of the 2ndry sources on Evidence-hearsay, this is simply an excellent book on the topic - uses a standardized approach to every hearsay exception + policy. THe other kickin read on Evidence is the latest Gilberts, Professor Goodes Sum & Substance CD's + Professor Goodes "Court Room Evidence Handbook" - by Thompson-West - the most succinct & lucid mini-evidence treatise. Finally, the www.Cali.org lessons are an infinite resource of drill problems with solutions. Should also mention the ExamPro on evidence is pretty good - but Cali is better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Content, Well-Organized
This is a good book.Use it as a supplement in your Evidence class and you'll know hearsay as well as anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Expert Writing on Being an Expert Witness
This is expert writing on being an expert witness. I skipped around but read the whole book and highly recommend that you do, too. It might be tempting to skip a chapter or two, depending on your needs, but reconsider and read them all. This was very helpful in many areas of expert witness, both research and testifying.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid advice for the beginning expert.
Becoming a specialist in one's field is a typical goal when questioning one of his/her aspirations. In many cases, you'll receive the answer, "...to become the best." (Love those willing to lay it all out!) If one's goal is to be a specialist, one must adhere to a few simple principals, principals composing vigilant and unending education. This individual will be current, well read, and extremely competent (in significantly most cases) in their chosen field. Many would call this individual an "expert" in his/her particular field. An accurate characterization indeed yet still green where the legal community is concerned. Capitalizing on this expertise is the mantra of Dan Poynter's, THE EXPERT WITNESS HANDBOOK. 3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but repetitious and needs a good editor
The Expert Witness Handbook covers a lot of ground, from selecting the expert andimpeaching opposing experts, to being deposed and giving trial testimony. The author is evidently well versed and very experienced in being an expert, and his opinions and anecdotes are laced through the book. This is both the strength and weakness of the book - the author's expertise in parachute accidents shows, but it also limits the overall usefulness. The repetition and poor grammar are more annoying.Because this book was published by the author, the lack of editing may be somewhat anticipated.Overall, I enjoyed the book and found it useful, but a good editor could have tightened it up a lot. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Pricey but Practical Primer
Iannuzi has written a well organized book filled with practical advice. Although most of what he says is very good, he does make a few false steps on the way. For example, he counsels too much reliance on the judge in handling a recalcitrant witness. Most judges I've been before feel that you ought to be able to control a witness without judicial intervention. Read more
