5-0 out of 5 stars Lawyers Poker
This is a rare book about an esoteric subject which the author has made clearly understandable for a wide audience of readers. Every one who faces the misfortune to become involved in the legal process should make this their first read. It helps one understand the games lawyers play with the fates and lives of their clients, opponents, judges and juries. Those not so unfortunate will appreciate the transfer of densely packed knowledge in an extremely lively and memorable package. Thosewho don't understand the allure of poker will gain appreciation for the game as a model for life situations.

3-0 out of 5 stars At least it teaches something about poker
This is an unusual packaging of standard lawyer "wisdom" that lawyers with more than a couple of years' experience will long since have read elsewhere. But it is interesting for what it tells neophyte poker players about how experienced players think.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun for Poker Lovers and Lawyers
I finished Lawyer's Poker just the other night. As a middling-bad poker player with an enjoyment of the game and a fan of Jim McManus' book, Fifth Street, I really found the stories amusing, interesting and educational.Keep up the good work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Non Factual
The First Trial is a very good book. The only fault is it does not belong in the Nut Shell Series. There are no case examples. It makes you think of how it would be if you didn't think of that before trial and is full of merit towards thinking outside the lawyer. You just never know if it works or not. It's self centered on the first trial of the lay person, Where Do I Sit? It would make a better audio book/ non-fiction, not a Law ref.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for law students- who should also see Keith Evans' book
Goldberg's nutshell is good, but Keith Evans' book, Common Sense Rules of Advocacy for Lawyers, is for the law student and new attorney who wants to learn how to be an excellent advocate.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars i like judge mathis
I THINK JUDGE IS A POSITIVE PERSON ,AND HIS STORY SPEAKS FOR IT SELF, IT IS UPTO YOU TO MAKE A DIFFERENT IN YOUR LIFE. YOU CAN DO IF YOU WANT IT BAD ENOUGH. AND I FEEL IT IS ALL WANT YOU WANT OUT OF LIFE. WITH PRAY, ANDWITH GOOD PEOPLE BEHINDYOU WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENT. AND IT GOES TO SHOW AND THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT JUDGE MATHIS DIDWITH GODS HELP. BECAUSE HE HAD TO HAVE GOD IN HIS LIFE IN OTHER TO GET AS FAR AS HE GOTTEN. I LOVE THE MAN, HE MAKES MY DAY. AND MAY GOD CON'T TO BLESS HIM AND HIS FAMILY. AND FROM WHAT I HAVE READ SO FAR I LOVE THE BOOK. HE IS A ROLL MODEL I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO MEET HIM . ONE DAY4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiration for People from All Walks of Life
The courage Greg Mathis exhibited in turning his life around is phenomenal! This book not only serves as inspiration for inner-city young people but anyone who has taken a wrong turn in life. This wrong turn could be criminal in nature or it could be a mistake in choosing a mate or career.Whatever the mistake or wrong turn, Greg Mathis' life proves you can "turn it around."I know Greg on a personal basis and met him through my friendship with his aunt Eva and her son, Walter.I can truly say Greg is a compassionate and down to earth man who freely shares his blessings with family and friends.

4-0 out of 5 stars Miracles Do Happen In The Innercity
I was originally drawn to this book about Greg Mathis because while in an airport traveling from Chicago back to LA, I happened to catch his tv show.I was impressed by his style in the courtroom so when I heard that he had written a book about his story, I thought let me pick it up.I had no idea about his background so at first I was physically afraid of this young Greg Mathis in which his book went on to described.I continued to read because I kept thinking when is the miracle going to happen.I was not sure that he would ever become anything more than what he was at the time, a thug and a criminal. Finally, more than half way through the book, the miracle happened and I found myself rooting for the young man, Greg Mathis. In short, his story touched my heart in a different way.Although I'm an african american women and grew up in Chicago during the 1960s and 1970s.The life that Judge Mathis described in his book was foreign to me.But I was so impressed with his determination, preseverance, hard work and his ability to never give up.While I don't have a lot of street smarts I found myself thinking perhaps I had been more judgmental in my past about the young boys who grew up in the project because I totally saw the change in Judge Mathis in this book.I'm glad that I read it and have been sharing with others that it is definitely a must read for all ages. The bottom line is anybody can be anything they want to be if they work at it and become discipline.Kudos to Judge Mathis and other african american males who have decided to allow the miracle to happen in their lives. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Ok, but not as convincing as others.
Having already read Dan T. Carter's masterful Scottsboro: A Tragedy of the American South, I already knew the story of the Scottsboro boys and the miscarriage of justice that happened to them. I hoped to get more insight with this book. Unfortunately, its unclear style got in the way. I would guess that someone who was unaware of this case might love this book--but if you are looking for more than narrative, get Carter's book instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars A forgotten embarassment
One of the more controversial events of the 1930's took place near Paint Rock, Alabama when nine Negro youths were arrested for the rape of two white women on a freight train. The nine were quickly tried and found guilty. Before the death penalty could be administered, appeals were filed with the aid of the US Communist Party.Thence ensued a lengthy series of trials and appeals that lasted from 1931 until well into the forties. It was a legal battle between White and Black as well as North and South with the battlefield always under the control of the White Southerners.Today it is an incident lergely forgotten by succeeding generations.Yet it is an excellent example of the the state of race relations in the South (not that there are too many surprises there), the role of moderate judges in reconciling racial injustice, the influence of the Communist/Socialist Parties in the 1930's as well as a number of other splinter stories.Therein lies the excellence of this book.5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book!!
I started reading this book with very little knowledge about the Scottsboro incident. This book does an amazing job of portraying the different sides to this tragic story. The chapters are short enough for those of us with short attention spans. However, each chapter grips you with why those particular people feel and think the way they do.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for criminal procedure.
This supplement is a must.It will save you time and energy. Bloom and Brodin give clean definitions for 4th amendment, 5th, and 6th. A friend of mine who passed the July 05 CA Bar (on the first attempt), used this book as her sole preparation for criminal procedure essay section. The checklist located in the appendix will ensure that you will not miss any issues.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great supplement but bad teacher
I just used this book to help me study for my CrimPro exam.I thought it was very, very helpful, but only because I had read my casebook and attended class all semester.Unlike Glannon's CivPro E&E (which is a MUST-BUY for any 1L), this book would not have been valuable if I had opened it during the semester; it was only valuable before my exam as a review. It does not provide insight into why the Supreme Court decided certain things; it simply gives us the rules the Court spat out with a miniscule amount of justification, if any.Your casebook and professor would likely discuss the reasons why the Court decided the way it did and why the concurring or dissenting justices reasoned the way they did.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not a helpful study aid
This book was a real disappointment compared to others in the examples and explanations series. Most of the examples were simply cases that if you had studied at all you would already know.If you didn't bother to do the reading for your class, then maybe it would be helpful. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good textbook for intro class
I suppose the most important question is why are you interested in this book.It would make a good textbook for an intro type class in this area or would be good for someone who doesn't know DNA analysis, but is involved in criminalistics. The level of detail is insufficient for anyone who actually understands the molecular approaches. It spends a fair bit of time talking about cases and HOW this particular approach was once useful. These are interesting little stories, but the book really didn't give me what I wanted.I have a background in molecular genetics and was interested in making a career shift to DNA forensics. There was little of value for me because it never really got to the details.I think it would be good for a class because it provides historical perspective on the now outdated techniques that would be important background for someone who never knew anything about the development of the previous techniques and only learned what is current today, but to someone who has that background...seemed like it just added a new chapter to an otherwise outdated book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great intro for the beginner
Having left behind my interest in genetics in order to pursue tax accountancy, I've always been fascinated by accounts of DNA typing. This book provides a wonderful introduction that is accessible to even the novice geneticist like myself.Much of the information Rudin and Inman give is quite practical; with some help from a friend who works in a medical lab I was able to set up my own electrophoresis gels and PCR.A word of caution to the amateur, however:make sure you practice before drawing any conclusions from the "evidence."My wife, Amy, wouldn't speak to me for a week after I claimed that a stain on our bed linen did not match my DNA.It turned out that she had spilled some ice cream.

3-0 out of 5 stars vivid introduction to forensic genotyping techniques
Nice figures, photos, schemes, and U.S. tables; lively comparisons show that authors are good teachers. Though technical part of the book outdates fast necessarily (acronym SNP has not been coined in 1996 yet), it is a shame that an interpretation part of the book neglects the current knowledge. Bayes theorem is known since 1763 and, nevertheless, likelihood ratio is not even mentined in the book! Books of Evett and Weir or of Robertson and Vignaux cannot be substituted by this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Dressler is a fantastic presenter
Dressler presents Criminal Procedure (and Criminal Law in his other CD set) with style and an obvious interest in the subject.I have listened to a number of other CD sets on various subjects in the law and this one ranks at the top (along side Mary Cheh's Con Law and Finz' Torts.)I recommend this for law school, bar review, and practioners looking for a nutshell account of the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a book for Byron White Fans
Byron White intentionally did not leave much of a paper trail, as a man distrustful of the press, which is why this book has nowhere near the depth of Jeffries' Powell biography. White may well be most vilified and castigated justice in his own time, a fact which Hutchinson recounts in great detail, because he frequently ruled against the interests of the intelligensia-- frivolous First Amendment rights claimed by the media, and, of course, homosexuals, in Bowers, which won him the most profane attacks of all, from gay rights activists imbued with more passion than respect for the deliberative function of the Courts.
4-0 out of 5 stars A New Deal liberal from the Rocky Mountain front range.
Byron White began his long judicial career in dissent, resisting the rising tide of criminal procedure liberalism of the Warren Court, and ended it as the balance wheel of Rehnquist Court. In his 31 years on the Supreme Court, from 1962 to 1993, he was in the majority in 807 five-to-four decisions, more than any other justice in history, except for the wily William Brennan who served on the court for 34 years.White also has the signal distinction of being the only Democratic appointee to the Supreme Court since the end of World War II who profoundly disappointed his erstwhile partisan allies.Beyond the fact that White refused to "grow" his jurisprudence from its New Deal origins to accommodate the latest cultural avant-garde enthusiasms of the juridical left, little is known about White and his jurisprudence is widely misunderstood. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Colorful Portrait Of A Man Named White
Hutchinson has written a fascinating contemporary biography of Justice White who is almost unique in his continued insistence on his privacy and personal dignity. Although the author eschews speculation as to White'sfamily or personal life, one still gets a good sense of the man--hisintelligence, tenacity, and just plain decency. At least as interesting arethe times he lived in, and few lawyers or judges have shared the action andpassion of their times more fully than Justice White--first on thegridiron, then in the classroom, in the world of affairs, and on the court.White had his shortcomings as a communicator and legal theorist, asHutchinsonaptly illustrates with the oral and written record. But wouldthat our society had more such self-effacing, dedicated and excellentlawyers and public servants! ... Read more
