4-0 out of 5 stars how to win your law suit when you win in california
This a super purchase, since I am in the mist of collecting a judicial judgment. The only thing that would make it better is if, a CD came with the book with FORMS on it ( ready to fill out).
5-0 out of 5 stars Save yourself lots of dough
I have used Nolo products for years. Both to help understand the law and it's processes even when using an attorney and to do some of my own legal work.I recently won a law suit of just over $150,000.The looser (in every sense of the term) had the assets but just wouldn't pay up.My attorney didn't do this kind of work, the court won't help (much) and the services that do this kind of work wanted 35%!I was not going to give up over $50,000 for what seemed like a fairly straightforward process. With this book it was a straightforward process.Within several days I had identified the assets (more than enough to satisfy the judgment) and was able to file the correct forms and follow the correct process.Within 45 days I had my money and could get on with my life. ... This books has helped our students enormously! It serves as a guide for them in the learning proces as well as goes with them to the workplace along with the updates and gives them a real edge as a new employee in a law office setting. Some say their boss (the attorney) uses the guide too!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellant book for corporate counsel and admin
With this book we have saved hundreds, probably thousands of dollars in legal fees. It guides you (even if you have no legal background) through the process, form and necessary schedules needed for civil legal procedures and litigation. 5-0 out of 5 stars Quick and Easy Reference

5-0 out of 5 stars Martial Law is not that scary
I have the 2nd Edition (1992), which probably dated compared to the 4th Ed. Comprehensive introductory comparison between civilian law and UCMJ. It helps to know a little about civilian law and procedure, which, unfortunately, is almost impossible even for licensed trial lawyers to understand (judges and prosecutors are "trial lawyers" too). This book does help break the brainwashing perped by a lying "news" media and Hollywood disinfotainment, and gives useful advice to NEVER trust police, and NEVER speak with police, and to first speak with a lawyer you can trust. Unfortunately, most people never read a law book until it's too late to do much good. This should be required reading for every person before they enlist. Every person should have a law library anyway, for self-defense, since every person must look out for themselves versus criminals and/or government, and EVERY person is robbed by both every year (especially if they don't even know it). There are many areas skipped in the 2nd Ed, like VA benefits being stolen by VA for 100% of disabled retirees (steal either pension or disabilty). Also, vaccine waivers must be signed on first day of enlistment ONLY (US Census reported 320,000 disabled Gulf War Vets as of Census 2000, plus 35,000 dead is reported from gulfwarvets.com). There are, of course, massive areas of law ignored/censored by the authors, especially frauds perped by courts, as in most other "mainstream" law texts. This, fortunately, does not detract from the book, since that other information is available to those to work hard to seek it out. 2nd Ed has good explanation of pretrial strategy for choosing which tunnel in the infinite maze. Since General Tommy Franks was quoted in December 2003 that he wants martial law in USA today, perhaps all US citizens will need this book soon, after all US courts are shut down and replaced by military Civil Affairs courts-martial. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars how to protect an invention; not how to make one
The book offers a good explanation to the tyro of what it takes to protect your invention. The book is not really about inventing, per se. Despite what the title says. A careful read of the contents reveals relatively little discussion about the raw inventing process. That is, how does one come up with an original idea that can be patentable? It may well be that such a question has no answer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Straight-forward Information

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book!
This is one of four how-to adoption books my husband and I bought in our plan to start an adoption. It was BY FAR the best. It was clearly written and laid out the information just as I would have done. The amount of detail was increadible, as no other books came close. We loved the step-by-step approach, and the insightful tips the author gave on finding a qualified agency or attorney, and how to eliminate the ones to avoid. He bluntly says what others seem to hesitate to do. He is an adoption attorney himself, and his tips are great.2-0 out of 5 stars What a let Down
As soon as I read this book, I wished I was the type of customer who sent back books of little value. We have just began the process of adoption and we are exploring the different avenues available in domestic adoption so I thought this book would be helpful, but instead I found the same information I was able to obtain in less than one day at the computer, by entering "Adoption" in my search engine. The chapter containing the laws of every state was concise and puts it all in one easy package but I am not sure if that is enough to make this worthwhile. The book also lacked any real material on the homestudy process, what you might excpect from agencies versus attorneys versus state agencies, and the pros and cons of each.So if you are completely new to the process of adoption, want the facts and nothing but the facts, are pretty sure that you want to use an attorney and conduct your own search for a prospective birth mother, then this book is for you.If not you might want to look elsewhere ... Scripting pearls of wisdom and drafting literary masterpieces is only part of a writer's job. There are many legal issues tied to writing, and it's better to read up on them in advance than to be reminded when it's too late that ignorance is no excuse under the law. 5-0 out of 5 stars The best legal guide for writers.
This is a terrific guide that tells writers at all levels what they need to know to avoid legal problems and negotiate successfully. It has the broadest coverage and is clearly written with many cases turned intofascinating and eduational anecdotes. I can't recommend it too highly.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great book-if you have a law degree (very dense reading)
I am about to be a published author. (scheduled for the summer of 2000) My hero is William Zinsser, author of On Writing Well. I like him because he writes so...well. Mr. Crawford needs to read Zinsser's book-several times. To be fair, Mr. Crawford's Legal Guide is organized and thorough, butthe wording is stiff and technical. I feel as though I am reading a collegelaw (or business) text book. He has no humor. I have an urge to drag out myyellow highlighter because there will be a test later.I am convincedI can read about anything if the material is well written. Mr. Crawford isalways grammatically correct, but I have to work too hard to understandhim. Legal Guide would be a wonderful book if you have a background in lawor business. Since I have neither, Irecommend Bunnin and Berens, TheWriter's Legal Companion. The style is friendlier for new authors who lackexperience in the business of contracts, copyright and publishing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Book
This book is one-sided and a total waste of time and money. The "solutions" he offers are not detailed and many are very unrealistic.
2-0 out of 5 stars Where's the Beef?
I read this book and the author is very vague about how you can go about doing some of the things he brings up in the book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Do NOT buy this book! It is full of lies and outdated information!
I have over 5 years of professional credit repair experience and I know just about everything there is to know about credit repair. I have read many books on the subject, but this is the worst one I have ever come across! The author states that FICO scores are issued by TRW, yet TRW has not existed for over 10 years! He further states that the credit bureaus have 60 days to complete an investigation request by any consumer, yet the Fair Credit Reporting Act, cleary states that they have 30 days to conclude any investigation! The author goes on to say that writing letters will not work, which is precisely the way that I have helped hundreds of people, including myself. The author states that the only way to remove negative or inaccurate items is to sue the credit bureaus! Well, this is easily said than done and he knows it! This is yet another lie! For all I know, the author probably works for the credit bureaus and banks by feeding the reader false, inaccurate, outdated information and drilling to sue the bureaus and creditors, because he knows it is easier said than done! I do not like this book, I do not recommend at all and the writing style is just plain dumb as it has absolutely no logic and too much beating around the bush for nothing in order to make the book thicker. I can't understand how it got published! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Copyright law is a complex field, and it's crucial for writers to understand what's entailed. Stephen Fishman covers what a copyright is, how it's created and protected, limitations and transfer of ownership, how long it lasts, and what copyright infringement is all about. There are chapters on copyright registration, copyright notice, and how to deal with errors or omissions. Fishman also wades into the issues of derivative works and compilations, works for hire, and jointly authored works. He also tackles the confusion of copyrights in the online world of electronic publishing; the book is worth its price for this chapter alone. Theappendix contains a variety of sample forms and blank forms and a PC-formatted disk of the same material. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Plagirism Problems
I hire work-for-hire writers to create story anthologies and have become increasingly frustrated by the tendency of many to liberally "borrow" the written words of others found via the Internet. This book's chapters on Copyright Infringement and Copyright in the Online World have been invaluable resources that I have used to educate both myself and my writers. The author has wonderful tools for assessing and evaluating similarities between two texts, a test for paraphrasing, sample legal cases and judgments, letters to send to copyright violaters, an examination of liability issues, and more.

I am an attorney (shyreslaw.com) and I highly recommend this book for those who could use a simple trust and want to avoid probate.Even if you decide to hire an attorney, this book is invaluable because it offers great insight into trusts and avoiding the probate system.
