From the horses mouth.
You can find some help-full suggestions in this self-serving book by a California judge, with contributions from a custody evaluator. But, you will have to look hard for something new and there are much better books listed on Amazon.
Read with a grain of sand....
I am very familiar with the courts in Santa Clara County (CA), having myself been caught up in a nasty custody battle (and other attendant battles) for 18 years.

Judge Stewart does a good job of getting you started in the California court system (where I fought my first battle). The primary information is about parent's rights. This is another of Nolo Press's outstanding self-help books, this time targeting a specific California audience of people who, with a little footwork and research, can potentially save thousands of dollars by selling their home without a real estate agent, or lowering the cost of an agent by doing much of the work themselves.Read more

Did what it was supposed to do
I sold my house in San Francisco without a broker (my first house sale).The buyer actually drew up the sales contract but this book helped me understand who should pay for what fees.

Nolo's Guide to Social Security Disability
Not at all helpful if you are filling out an application for SSDI benefits.More than 3/4 of the book is on the appeal process and social security system jargon.You can tell it is written by a lawyer, its worthless.

This book is invaluable for anyone contemplating a disability claim or for anyone seeking to preserve benefits. The authors explain the elements of a claim; namely the severity of an impairment and its impact on the ability to function in a work environment or setting. The MINE claims are predefined by the law. These are "Medical Improvement Not Expected". i.e. a number of debilitating arthritic diseases or diseases of the musculo-skeletal system
A great reference book overall
This is an excellent book of the whole area of Social Security Disability benefits and how to fill the forms out completely, when to seek an attorney for appeals etc, and a rather extensive section on what the term disability means to Social Security and what diseases, conditions etc qualify and which do not.The only area lacking was disabled spousal Social Security Disability coverage, which a spouse under age 50 with no minor children must file for in the same way the working spouse who becomes disabled would have to do.I plan on donating my copy which I bought via Amazon.com to my local public library. ... Excellent self help guide on the subject
If you are reading this review, you are most probably a prospective plaintiff considering recovering losses you incurred in an auto accident through the small claims court process.This guide will help you tremendously.The NoLo series is an incredible service to mankind.It is the equivalent to the Dummies series focused on the Law.And, who besides expensive lawyers really understand the Law?Readers who have studied NoLo books!
START WITH THIS BOOK FIRST
If you want to make less mistakes, save time and money, it's best to start with this book so you can get the correct service, venue, and evidence organized to file and win. I found the chapter on how to write a demand letter and settle your claim before it gets to court very helpful. They even offer sample letters you use to settle your case. Nolo Press seems to put together the best legal self help books.

Win in Small Claims Court!
If you have a claim involving $5,000 or less, you can easily and inexpensively bring an action in Small Claims Court. But even though Small Claims Court is designed for non-attorneys (in fact, attorneys are not allowed) you still must have a basic understanding of the rules of evidence and know how to put on your case. I hope to set up trusts using this book's sample trusts.
This landmark book from the 1960's is apparently no longer in print. This worries me just a bit since it seems it should be still useful and thus profitable to print. One answer might be that Mr. Dacey's book has caused some of the exorbitant charges and abuses of probate to disappear (out of embarrassment?).One probate issue which has not disappeared, is the lengthy time(months or years)during which probate proceedings control the assets covered by a will -- assets which the book says it clearly enables you yourself to place in a simple trust so your beneficiaries (or heirs) will have instant and clear title to them at your death.It describes large reductions in transaction costs including tax savings, but it does not, in my opinion, show how to pass assets to your heirs tax-free.

Norman Dacey was disbared when he discovered what a ... the whole probate system is. His revenge is the contents of this book. It is worth its wieght in gold! Over the past 30 years the Bar Associations have black-balled him and his books. He is an honest and genuine man and this book is his legacy. The bulk of its contents are pre-fabricated meticulously prepared forms that everyone should have BEFORE THEY DIE if they want to be absolutely certain their estates will go to their loved ones tax-free and without attorneys taking most of it.

Laid Off or Fired, You Need Help to Make Money
If You are Laid Off or Redundant you need ideas to Make Money. First negotiate the best package or payoff from work.Second, how to make money from home for your future.This book does not go into a lot of details on how to start a business, probably the most likely options if you are laid off over 40.

Essential information helpfully presented
The problem is that when we have a job we tend to invest in the illusion of security. We also feel disloyal to our employer if we prepare for the time of separation. Shipping was Delayed!

Why you should NOT buy this book...
I give credit for the catchy title! But I seriously have issues with neighbors and this book does nothing to help solve those issues. You will get a fluff of stories upon stories about how others have it bad. Then the solution for noisy neighbors will be to buy a set of earplugs and turn up your tv. I couldn't believe the book recommended that if the noise from neighbors comes from a teenager/college kid holding a house party -- to pay that kid to not have parties there. That's promoting extorsion and it's bribery. Do you really think once you start paying a kid not to have parties at his house, he/she won't ask for more money?! This book is STUPID, STUPID, STUPID unless you just love reading about how others have it more worst off -- like the senior citizen who kills his neighbors because they wouldn't allow him to have any nights rest with all the noise they made.

but I had to do something, my neighbors are so noisy... Make your agent read this...but you should read
This is a great resource for dealmaking, but most actors and writers that I know aren't negotiating their own deals.The trick is to get your agent to work harder at creating opportunities, so that they actually have deals to make. Yes, your agent should read this book ... but for myself, as an actor/writer the book HOW TO AGENT YOUR AGENT...is my bible. It helps me kick my agents in the butt ( without them knowing)and I get results...they're working harder and I'm getting work.Also I liked that book with all the casting directors pictures...just in case you see them in Starbucks and want to say hello.

Crystal Clear, Easy to Read
My husand and I just wanted to put together a living will and health care directive and at this point just need something fairly simple.This book is easy to understand, yet comprehensive.

Very good book - wish it was my text for class
Have not had a chance to read cover to cover yet, but it looks very well written and organized so far, so that any normal person can absorb and understand.Wish this was the required text for my class.No doubt it will probably fill in the gaps that my real text missed, since this book seems more grounded in reality, than textbook theory.It may not help me on the test, thought I'm sure it will; but I'm sure it will help me in real life.

Very understandable over view of a complex subject!
As a development officer for a prep school, I was looking for a book that would give me a birds-eye view of issues involved with estate planning. Steve Maple�s The Complete Idiot�s Guide to Wills and Estates does this masterfully. And, to my relief, in plain English. Highly recommended :)
If you have ever embarked on a mission to get your affairs in order, or to help someone get theirs in order, you know how daunting the task can seem. I bought three other books prior to this one, and wish I would have started here. The other books are vast in their expertise, but are too complex for someone getting started. This book is the perfect place to start if you want to gain knowledge about estate planning prior to either making your own will (and/or living trust), or prior to going to see a lawyer for his or her help. This book explains the essentials in simple English. It truly delivers on its sub-title, "What you need to know & nothing more".
