5-0 out of 5 stars Praise from Isabel Allende
As the matriarch in a very large extended family, where there is much love but conflict may be unavoidable, I read Collaborative Divorce with great interest.I hope my family will not need to use it, but just in case, I bought a copy for each couple around me.Bitter divorces are expensive, painful, they create long-term resentment, and make it difficult to raise healthy children. The damaging effects of failed or thwarted love can and should be avoided. That is the point of this book.According to the authors, when there is a commitment to integrity, ethical
5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read for Divorce
The authors have succeeded in creating an easily accessible and remarkably complete guide to thinking about and managing this difficult process. The combination of legal and emotional insight will resonate strongly with anyone who has participated in divorce and goes on to skillfully guide the reader through the alternative.Clearly there is a better way and this work hits on all the different aspects, how to approach them and the high value of avoiding the legal process. This is a must read for anyone contemplating divorce. The outcome will be a dramatically better experience, better settlement and an easier path to the rest of one's life.Top rating.

Editorial Review

If you take it step by step, the United States legal system is not nearly as intimidating as it is reputed to be. With a little expert guidance from a couple of attorneys (Stephen Elias and Susan Levinkind), you can learn what's in a law library and how to use it, how to seek and understand statutes, regulations, and cases, how to explore online resources, practice your legal skills in the library, and even write a reputable legal memorandum. It's not as easy nor as immediately gratifying as buying an ice-cream cone, but with a modicum of patience, dedication and average smarts, you can research and understand the law without years of legal training and without emptying your bank account onto some lawyer's shiny desk.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Legal Research: How To Find & Understand The Law
Awesome!Very thorough and easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars The very best!
I am a legal assistant and I use this book constantly! It gives you great strategies to work more efficiently while getting better results. I had no idea how many legal resources there are online! This book tells you which sites are the most reliable and easy to use. It also demystifies annotated legal codes, case digests, state reports and many other research tools. But most importantly it is extremeley well organized and easy to use. I wish that I had discovered this book when I was a student!

5-0 out of 5 stars A simple, direct, straightforward, "user friendly" guide
Now in its tenth edition, Legal Research: How To Find & Understand The Law by attorneys Stephen Elias and Susan Levinkind is a simple, direct, straightforward, "user friendly" guide to the extremely complicated and tricky topic of doing legal research. Individual chapters address how to properly frame questions in legal categories and efficiently look up relevant laws and case history. Legal Research is emphatically not a substitute for a consultation with an attorney; however, a close reading followed by judicious use of its fact-finding methods is a superbly effective way for non-specialist general readers to prepare themselves before sitting down with a billed-by-the-hour consultation with a licensed attorney or paralegal researcher! ... This is a gem of a book that helps you navigate financial discussions in a compassionate yet business-like manner.Arlene Dubin informs her readers WHY issues are important and shows them HOW to initiate discussions based upon common values and shared goals. After a couple finds they are on the same page, the dollars involved and technical know-how can be inserted into the dialogue.5-0 out of 5 stars Must reading for any man about to get married.
.5-0 out of 5 stars Great and Helpful Look at Misunderstood Topic
Arlene Dubin makes premarital agreements, and the reasons to have one, easy to understand for all readers. She takes a look at the objections many people have to a prenup and explains clearly why a prenup can be stabilizing to a marriage. The book is well-written and fun to read, too, mixing in real-world examples. It's always terrific when an author can take a topic seriously without being too serious.Ms. Dubin does it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Take it from me, this is the best book
All the dueling reviews below would have you wonder about the quality of both "Divorce and Money" books, so as an experiment I got both. It's pretty clear that this book (Nolo's) is the better one, hands down. The difference was evident in just minutes. Everything's presented in easy to read verbiage, the charts are easy to use, and the forms and checklists were really handy. Helped me and my ex make the split easier than I expected, frankly. Thank you for this book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars My new favorite book!
Okay I might be exagerating but I did love this book. A friend recommended it after my husband and I decide to "part ways." I accidently picked up the other book with the same title and was not so thrilled with all the Get A Attorney advice, but then I realized my mistake and got this version -- it's SO helpful. It almost took me by the hand and showed me how to be less emotional than I would be when making decisions affecting how to split our property and bills up, and how to figure out child support.

1-0 out of 5 stars My eyes glazed over.........FELT LIKE I WAS IN LATIN CLASS!!
Read both books and all the reviews of 2 books with basically the same name and if you want more information in a MUCH MORE user friendly, readable (in English) format at 1/2 the price buy the other book by Smith, Divorce and Money Everything you need to know.I read a review that the Smith book just wants you to hire expensive lawyers.NOTHING could be further from the truth. No matter what, you need a lawyer and this book tells you the same thing. It doesn't mean you have to be stupid! As a normal, middle class guy with a college education and MY OWN BUSINESS this book makes you feel like you are in Latin Class again.Do your self a favor and not only buy Smith's book on Money get her book on Children.......you will save lots of time and stress. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Advice on Probating an Estate
My brother and I are in the process of probating my Mom's estate with the assistance of this excellent book by Nissley. It hops around a little bit, but all the information is between the covers. So far we have had zero problems. We have not had to consult with an attorney nor a paralegal to have our forms filed with the court. This book is going to save us time and money - about $5,000 on my Mom's small estate.Thank you Julia Nissley and Nolo Press!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
I used this book to administer an estate in CA. It walked me through the entire process and the forms provided in the book were very helpful. It saved us a lot of fees that would normally go to an attorney and turned what could've been a mysterious legal jumble into a step-by-step process that could be understood.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Title
This book is fantastic. There is a wealth of useful forms for everything you can imagine. I recieved this book as a gift and though that it would just take up space on my bookshelf. Ironically it has been the most referred to and used book I have ever owned. I have used the book to set up a power of attorney, prepare a tenants notice to move out, demand the return of a security deposit, complete a loan comparison worksheet, and to sell my dog. This book provides the forms and the explanation to do eveything I mentioned as well as a ton of other common transactions. It has saved me hundreds of dollars and I beleive that anyone who buys this book will cover the cost of the book within three months by making use of the forms and instructions provided.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for an intelligent frugal like myself
This book was terrific. If you have half a brain and like to save money this book is a must have. It contians almost every essentail form that you will need and it explians what they are and how to use them in a clear and concise way that even my nine year old niece could understand. And I guarantee that you will rely on this thing at least once a year for the rest of your life it is just that useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful and Accurate
This is a thorough and useful book. In a day when our freedoms are being eroded steadily, it's nice to see a book that puts students' legal rights back into their hands.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, legal advice that is clear AND funny
This is a comprehensive guide to every aspect of the law a college student will encounter. Without question most students and administrators will buy it for its chapter on Parties and the Police (a gem) and Sex; but don't miss out on the chapters on landlord/tenant relations, privacy, plagiarism and research, and intellectual property. Obviously, not even Lindsay can make the guidelines for conducting experiments on Human Subjects into light reading; but even this is refreshingly clear ---- and the rest of the book is (always) downright useful and (frequently) screamingly funny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great stocking stuffer
Informative and well-written, this is the perfect gift for all college students. The author has collected, in an accessible format, practical real world information, from freedom of speech and privacy rights in electronic communications to things students must look out for in an apartment lease.Parents of college students should present this book as a gag gift while holding out faint hope that it might actually spark some curiosity. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Reference for Anyone Unclear about Copyright Issues
This is an excellent, time-saving reference that explains the process of "getting permission" in plain language and demystifies most of the myths and assumptions surrounding copyright issues. The author goes beyond giving general advice on how to get permission by providing step by step instructions and easy-to-use forms. This book should be read before starting your creative work...it'll inform you of what's legal and what isn't.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference!
There is a lot of information in this book, lots to read and it is very in depth on the subject of copyrighted materials. What is very convenient is that the book includes a CD which has all of the forms that you will need to seek permission for various copyrighted materials. 5-0 out of 5 stars Decent Book
This is a decent book.I am a 3L law student thinking of doing collections. This book is an excellent choice for the average person with no legal education. As a law student though I always expect more though but it does set out the basics in an unbiased manner with the law printed in the appendix.Definitely worth the price.
4-0 out of 5 stars Collection Agency Harassment: - ok
so -so review, Mostly common sense. But a few good tips on mounting a counter attack although it doesn't let you know the practicalities of enforcing the FDCPA, namely that federal and state agencies typically don't respond to your complaints except with a form letter and no action.

1-0 out of 5 stars Info reasonable (if dating quickly), but twisted by anger
While much of the info is correct (if changing quickly, thanks to the rise of shared-custody arrangements), the tone perpetuates the stereotype of raging ex-husband who demonizes the wife, and aims to "win".There's no winning with an attitude like this. And I see this attitude leaving woman after woman feeling like she has to simply shut down any attempt at communication and relationship-building with her ex.
4-0 out of 5 stars Realistic
this book is informative. It shows you what you might expect. For me, it was a review of what has happened and a quick look at what I might have to look forward to.It was a good book.It showed me that my illogical, so to be ex-wife, is not the only woman out there who cares more about herself than the best interests of her child. When do we, as a society, get real about this and do something about it?Keep in mind that the best way to divorce (even with children involved) is to be able to discuss things with your spouse and to work them out amicably. If that is not happening please, for the sake of yourself and your children, do not just roll over and let her walk over you.Read this book or a book like it, and seek out an attorney who communicates and has experience with what you are going through. It will cost money but it is well worth it.Most of all, your child will appreciate the effort you put forth to continue your relationship with her (or him).

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this book and read it, take notes, study it, and then file for your divorce.
This is one of the best books I've found on divorce and/or custody issues. It is easy enough to read for the novice, yet is packed with information to be valuable to an expert. Get this book and read it, take notes, study it, and then file for your divorce. It will be some of the best money you will spend. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THANKS NOLO for putting this book out!JUST what I needed!
I LOVE this book!Very thorough, endless hints and tips.I am no longer afraid or to bring my own case and feel informed and competent. This book tells you with frank honesty what to expect, where you may encounter trouble and helps you handle almost any situation.I recommend it to EVERYONE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Legal Information You Can Bank On!
In my capacity of monitoring the information desk for Chicago's main library, the Harold Washington Library, I come in contact with numerous people who are embroiled in legal battles and who need some accurate guidance in plain English. This book, "Represent Yourself In Court," is one of the books I recommend the most for those who have minor legal issues and can't afford (or choose not) to hire an attorney. It walks you through a whole range of legal proceedings from start to finish. It also presents questions for you to ponder before you decide to initiate legal action. It's written for civil litigation, not criminal. It also gives information about settling a matter, and gives pointers on how to decide if yu need professional help.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Good, but necessarily limited, intro to the legal system

2-0 out of 5 stars I think there are better books to use
This book is not for the person just getting an intiation into school law.It is too condense and only gives blurbs of the verdicts in each case by quoting the appellate and US supreme court judges which are oft times convoluted, the author leaves out an indepth explanation of the nuts and bolts.I refer to this book as the Reader's Digest version of school law. Also, the print is microscopic which is really hard on the eyes.

3-0 out of 5 stars How good can it be?

5-0 out of 5 stars If you must have a day in court, make it a good one!
Reading this book and following the steps gave me a VICTORY on my day in court. This book, a great list of questions for the officer about my particular infraction (from the web), and the vehicle codes, were the only materials I used.I felt comfortable presenting my case and beating the wrap.It was awesome. The judge said he believed that I was indeed driving safely that day, "case dismissed".And I now *know* that I was truly not guilty.Using what I learned, I also assisted my mother in getting out of a Jaywalking ticket!I definitely recommend it for it's straightforwardness and simplicity and it's thoroughness.

2-0 out of 5 stars A SO-SO Book.
This book is not too bad. It is full of great tips and tactics. But alot of it is common sense. If you really want to beat a speeding ticket and want to learn all about the equipment the police use to nail you, I suggest you buy the book called The Educated Guide to Speeding Tickets by Richard Wallace. He is an ex cop and who knows more about radar, speeding tickets than a cop. He has written a great book. His book helped me beat 2 speeding tickets so far. You can buy it right here at Amazon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad
The author suggests a lot of common sense ideas on how to deal with police officers and with the court, such as being polite to the police officer no matter how rude or how evil thier tactics were to catch you.It also gives some really good suggestions on what to say and what not to say to the officer or in court.I can't say it works cuz since I bought the book, I've also bought a radar detector and that has saved me more than the book.Simplicity and the ideas written in this book are the basis of my rating. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Way to Start Learning About Law
This is one of the "how-to" books that are fun to read even if you are not faced with a situation which requires it.This well-written book covers a wide range of legal topics that an American citizen may face one of these days.Much emphasis is placed on things like maritalproblems, parenting problems, employment issues, consumer and creditproblems, etc.Needless to say it does NOT replace a good lawyer when thecase is complex, but the author actually encourages you to "take thelaw into your own hand" and shows you how you can solve a number ofeveryday legal difficulties without hiring a lawyer.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone even thinking of getting a divorce!
I bought this book and even though I used a lawyer it was great.I totally understood everything to expect and it did not seem so confusing.I really liked seeing what the forms are.The info about mediation would have helped me a lot if I ordered the book before we went to the lawyer. The advice about custody was so right.

2-0 out of 5 stars divorce is STILL too difficult even with this book..
even with the book, i feel like its too much of a maze for us.. we might have to get a lawyer after all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand and very helpful
This book was so helpful. It explained the laws and my alternatives. Even though I ended up getting an attorney because my case was reallycomplicated and nasty, I used the book to answer questions that came up.Being able to look at the forms in the book really helped me to understandwhat my attorney was doing ...
