3-0 out of 5 stars Good Basic Info But Non-Specific
I probably had the wrong expectations for this book but I was hoping it would (quickly) help me validate whether info I've used required permission.I suppose it did this in an indirect way, however, the free use stuff included old songs etc. that were not appropriate for my topic.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, practical advice
I made the mistake of buying the first edition of this book (published in 2001), but found it to be an excellent guide to the legal issues involved with public domain textual material.I have already published one book which relied heavily on public domain materials, and am working on a second, and when I bought this book I had several specific questions that I was trying to answer. This book answered all of them, as well as some that I hadn't thought of!I'll probably end up buying the second edition, just to see what has changed in the last few years.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most useful books I have ever encountered
This fat and informative book is a goldmine for anyone interested in public domain works, whether writings, music, art, films or just about anything else. The author, Attorney Stephen Fishman, begins with an examination of copyright laws and the public domain. After that, the book begins each of the chapters on copyrightable materials with a handy checklist for use in determining public domain status, and then launches into a discussion of how to determine the public domain status of such an item. After those useful chapters, the author examines the use of copyrighted and public domain works.Read more

I felt compelled to write about this book after reading one of the reviews on it apparently written by a female.
3-0 out of 5 stars Some good thoughts but overoptimistic
The author of this book certainly does not say anything that is untrue, even given the huge disparity of laws in the 50 states. However, on the front cover, among other things, he says you will learn how to:

5-0 out of 5 stars An informative reference guide to the complex laws and regulations concerning neighborly disputes and intricacies
The newly expanded and updated fifth edition of Neighbor Law: Fences, Trees, Boundaries, And Noise by attorney and mediator Cora Jordan is an informed and informative reference guide to the complex laws and regulations concerning neighborly disputes and intricacies. Deftly covering laws concerning such issues as water runoff and flooding, trees that hang over property line, problems with neighboring businesses, noisy neighbors, unclear boundary lines, blocked views, high or unsightly "spite" fences, dangerously deteriorating fences, dangers to children, and so much more, Neighbor Law is a complete and thorough compendium ideal for non-specialist general readers wanting to know (and be able to enforce) their rights as a property owner in a neighborhood of property owners. Neighbor Law is very strongly recommended for anyone searching for a "user friendly" informational documentation of all the rules and regulations concerning proper neighbor responsibilities and an understanding of what can and can not be lawfully done when a conflict arises between neighbors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just What the Doctor Ordered
This is an excellent book.It answered all of my questions about handling my estate, and it answered many questions that never occurred to me.The writing is straightforward and easily understood. The title is THE AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION GUIDE TO WILLS AND TRUSTS, but it covers a good deal more:steps to help your family now; estate plans; avoiding or reducing estate taxes; transferring property without a will; securing long-term care help; and many other topics relating to managing your estate and passing it on to your heirs. This is a very useful book.

1-0 out of 5 stars The American Bar Association wants you confused.
Don't be a sucker. The ABA is not going to help you understand the probate or non-probate system.I have been a lawyer for over twenrty years, and I can't understand what they are trying to say. They want you to give up rather than understand the tools of estate planning.I am the author of "Everything A Baby Boomer Should Know -- An Insider's Guide To Estate Planning."Compare it to the contents of this ABA book. The difference is that the ABA book is nothing more than another textbook that speaks over your head.Read my book and truly understand how the system works for you.I promise.

5-0 out of 5 stars A convenient concise OVERVIEW
This is quick 85-page overview of the patent process. It provides the key steps, requirements, and definitions in very plain terms (almost in the same style of language as the IRS's 1040EZ instructions). However, it steers clear from giving ADVICE.If you need advice, try Patent It Yourself, from Nolo Press.
3-0 out of 5 stars Government publication that needs a new edition
This is not the first place to start if you're interested in the patent process. The law is dynamic and this book was out of date years ago. There are many other books out there that will outline the basics in a much more reliable way.Look for a book that will discuss World Trade Organization provisions and other international aspects of IP law - otherwise it's too limiting.Never choose to file for a patent application yourself.Use references to educate yourself on the process and then if you want to pursue this expensive process (which can become more expensive if you make an error) find a registered agent or attorney.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction
This book offers a simple, straightforward interoduction to patent law. If you are starting from scratch, this is a good place to start. There isn't much "how to" in this book, so it's probably best for someone who plans to work with a patent lawyer or service. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I read this book and it was great!
I found this book very easy to understand and informative. I have attended estate planning seminars and other financial conferences, but came away overwhelmed and confused. Jay has a great personal story that really adds to his credibility. After I finished reading it, I immediately read it again. I know what to do and what not to do. I have changed the way I do business since I read this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book
I have read hundred of books on finances and I would rate this book near the top as to its usefulness. I learned more about asset protection from reading this book than I have learned from the hundreds of hours I have spent with CPAs, attorneys and financial advisors over the years.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pass
Among his estate planning peers, Jay Mitton is one of the least liked and most notorious attorneys because of his heavy marketing of arguably worthless pre-made kits for family limited partnerships. The low quality of these kits, combined with Mitton's less-than-truthful marketing, has generated some scathing comments on the American Bar Association's estate planning bulletin board. The Supreme Court of Florida in fact entered an order prohibiting him from marketing in that state. The guy is a great marketer, to be sure, but his products can be charitably described as substandard and if you buy his book you need to also buy a ton of salt to go with it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Understand Legal concepts easily with this book!
I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Tonya Marie Evans at the Book Expo of America in Washington DC this year and she is a smart, enthusiastic, driven woman. This book should be required reading for anyone wishing or thinking about writing and publishing a book. This book will help you understand the process in plain english. This book clearly explains complicated legal issues, offers examples and answers your questions. This is a book you will want to keep on your desk and refer back to again and again. I recommend this to each person who sends me a book to review or asks me any type of publishing question.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-written, to the point and organized!
Literary Law Guide for Authors is my 'gold medal'. I treasure this well-written and VERY easy-to-read book! I've written (self-published) a children's book and currently writing a spiritual anthology. In both cases, I desperately needed contract forms and from searching the internet and communicating briefly with the author, I ordered this book. The forms section (in addition to the CD) included every bit of information I needed to create and provide a professional looking contract. I just can't say enough of this book. TIMELY. WELL-WRITTEN. INFORMATIVE.

Finally, here's an all-inclusive, easy-to-understand book about issues of intellectual property, copyright, trademarks, online works, the Fair Use doctrine, contracts, agreements, and more. By using helpful symbols and clearly written descriptions, these legal experts provide, in one volume, a wealth of information critical for authors to know. With a little patience, anyone can understand the information the Evans attorneys provide. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Get It Together: Organize Your Records So Your Family Won't Have To by Melanie Cullen
My mother died suddenly and left her estate in a total mess. I was left shocked, grief-stricken and alone in struggling to make sense of what needed to be done. I wouldn't wish that ordeal on anyone let alone on those I love. This workbook and companion organizer is the perfect solution. Nothing will be left to guesswork if I am incapacitated or dead. It is thorough yet simply organized and written from a compassionate perspective. It is a gift of love to provide this kind of direction to those who must make decisions on your behalf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just What I Needed
I've recently retired and am looking forward to years of "re-engaging" with activities I haven't had time to focus on during all those years of full-time work and rearing children. Get it Together is exactly what I needed to provide essential background information and help me organize all the documentation I want my family to have. Now I can travel and do the things I've been looking forward to without worrying about whether my children will be able to figure out what I would have wanted them to know in case something should happen to me.
5-0 out of 5 stars Caring and Compassionate
Melanie Cullen has approached a very difficult topic with insight and compassion. Starting with the Letter to Loved Ones, Health Care Directives, Funeral and Memorial Services, through various chapters on the disposition of assets - including Pets and Livestock - she offers helpful guidance in a straightforward, friendly manner. Whether you already have everything together or haven't a clue where to start, "Get It Together: Organize Your Records So Your Family Won't Have To" is an excellent guide that will make it easier for your loved ones to help in the event that you are incapacitated, or to manage your estate when you are gone. The forms in the bookand on the CD can be easily organized and updated in the companion Planner.A must read for everyone! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Do It Right - Do It Yourself - And Save Money!
On the last couple of patent applications I submitted, I ended up doing 90% of the drawings myself because it turned out to be easier than continuously having to correct the mistakes of the draftsman. My attorney said that my drawings just needed to be shaded and cleaned up a bit, and have the legends applied, but otherwise what ended up going into the applications was essentially my drawings with a few more bells and whistles. His draftsman had just put them on a light table and copied them as is.But I still had to pay for the drawings!5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Step by Step for the Do-it-yourself Inventor
I have all of David Pressman's books on patenting, you know why? Because I filed my own patent using these books. That's how good they are. They really do have step by step instructions. He also has software that helps you prepare the docs. I sort of used that as well. Again, reasonable priced, and useful. I strongly recommend these books for anyone that wants to File a Patent. They will allow you to do it yourself without an attorney.

5-0 out of 5 stars Short, sweet, and to the point
After reading this book you can probably be an executor for an estate without hiring an attorney (assuming no legal documents have to be prepared or filed in court). I found this book in the reference section of the Westfield Pubic Library (NJ) along with its companion book: A Family Guide to Wills, Funerals & Probate (ISBN: 081604550X). This book was written for an executor to read, and the companion book concerned much of the same material but for the decedent to read before he or she dies.

5-0 out of 5 stars IN YOUR HOUR OF NEED
Recently, I purchased Gayle Rosenwald Smith's DIVORCE AND MONEY, Everything You Need To Know, as I am starting divorce proceedings for the second time. I cannot recomend this book highly enough. I was confused as to why this informative, excellent book has recieved such negative comments by some of Amazon's reviewers. There is another book with the same title--but with a different sub-title, that was refered to as preferable; eventhough I found that Nolo Press book (which I examined) to be less informative, more difficult to comprehend and more expensive; $14.95 v. $34.99.
1-0 out of 5 stars This is the wrong book!
I got this book on accident after my friend recommended the Nolo book by the same name. I was really not expecting much and this book lived up to my expectations because it kept saying "Go see a lawyer! Go see a lawyer!" Then my friend saw I had the wrong book... Part of the reason I picked up this book was all the good reviews, but then I see that many of them come from Philadelphia, where this book's author is from. Coincidence? Probably not because all their comments don't seem to match the contents. Do yourself a favor and get the Nolo book, it's really much better. ... Read more

Matters of law are usually best left to attorneys and alike. It makes perfect sense to have some basic knowledge before entering any type of business. Planning your estate is one of the most complicated endeavors you'll ever undertake, yet its results are also the most far-reaching; after all, it will continue to affect those you care about long after you no longer can. So it's worth understanding all the options and ramifications, being personally involved, and doing it right. This Nolo Press guide to estate planning is an excellent source of information on the many various details and considerations that you need to take into account--such as children and probate, estate and gift taxes, second marriages, and a wide variety of trust options (charitable, generation-skipping, spendthrift, living, and educational, for starters). It delves into the factors that affect married people versus single, the laws regarding children, types of beneficiaries and wills, plus joint tenancy, life insurance, retirement benefits, taxes, and organ donation. Showing a number of sample estate plans, explaining what hiring a lawyer can do for you (and how to choose a good one), how to do your own research, and including a glossary of estate-planning terms, Clifford and Jordan give you the tools to decide for yourself how you want your estate disposed of--and to make sure that's what your legal documents reflect.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Estate Planning Techniques
This book provides an easy to understand overview of estate planning plus easy to understand detail on many special circumstances. It is very easy to understand which estate planning techniques are right for you, and there are many examples that illustrate how the techniques work.Approximately half of this book is relevant to everyone. The other half gives clear, common sense explantions of advanced planning techniques that are typically reserved for those fortunate enough to be planning a high net worth estate (lets say $1M+).The advanced techniques are not for do it yourselfers, but the book gives you a good understanding of the issues and lets you converse intelligently with an attorney.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for artists
This is an excellent resource to define and explain legal issues in the arts. It is a little dry in some parts but far easier to read than books written for the legal profession. I have been using this book as a textbook for a college class at an art school for graphic design students for several years.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference Guide
Even if you have the luxury of an attorney that speicalizes in art contracts, as I do, this is a great book of forms to keep handy for quick reference. My advice is to get it with his other book: Business & Legal Forms for Fine Artists also by Tad Crawford

5-0 out of 5 stars If not this book, what else?
As the title of the book stated, "Legal guide for the VISUAL ARTIST", the book covers information that is aimed at VISUAL artists, including photographers, painters, printmakers, designers, sculptors, illustrators, textile designers, cartoonists, and craftspeople. Wow!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Parental Alienation & False Child Abuse Allegations
ELUSIVE INNOCENCE: SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR THE FALSELY ACCUSED by Dean Tong, accurately states, "We will not win the war until we win the battle against false allegations first". There is no book that comes close to this on the market.
4-0 out of 5 stars An informative read!
We will not win the war against child abuse until
5-0 out of 5 stars To those who don't believe that accusations are ever false..
...you need to read this book.As a feminist, I had the requisite low opinion of men.As an abuse victim, I believed that all children and mothers were always 100 percent truthful when reporting abuse. As a woman who was married to two abusive men, I readily believed all stories of domestic abuse as well.
