5-0 out of 5 stars Animals, so long as they are classified as legal property, cannot have meaningful interests
This book was revolutionary in terms of animal rights theory when published in 1995.Gary Francione is a law professor as well as a philosopher, and his legal expertise allowed him to add an essential component to animal rights theory that was missing in the previous literature. That is the realization that animals are human property, and that in the United States legal system, property cannot by definition have meaningful interests compared to property owners. Our laws purport to balance the interests of humans and animals, but this book is replete with examples of U.S. judicial decisions which show that the property status of animals pre-determines the outcome of that balance in favor of humans.Animals, Property, and the Law is a must read for students of animal rights, animal law, jurisprudence, and moral philosophy. It addresses certain topics, including the doctrine of legal standing, in more depth than do Francione's later books. It also provides a rich and devastating critique of the federal Animal Welfare Act, which purports to regulate the use of animals in experiments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Animals as property?
Everybody thinks animals should be treated "humanely" and humans shouldn't cause them "unnecessary" pain. So why do animals enjoy so little legal protection?

3-0 out of 5 stars Smith, Currie & Hancock's LLP Common Sense Construction Law
A great introduction to Construction Law for any aspiring Project Manager or Construction Professional.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great overview, but lacks some depth in places
This book was used as the text for a Construction Law case I took in law school.Overall I found the book to be very good.It was clear, concise, well written, and easy to understand. It also brought a pretty wide range of topics into the mix, and provided a fair amount of places to go for additional information (by way of case law).If I had to complain, and for the purposes of this review I will, I would make two comments: 1) There are areas where a little more depth would be nice.Frankly, I don't think the scope of this book really includes in-depth analysis on anything so this might be a non-issue for many folks.I just found that there were a few times (a very few) when I was looking for more information.2. This book does a really nice job incorporating definitions for new terms into the text. However, there are a LOT of new terms and a glossary would have beeen a nice addition to the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Smith, Currie & Hancock LLP's Common Sense Construction Law

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money and type in the words "Home Defect" into Google
This book feels like it was written by a college student who does lousy internet research. Most of the information in the book is basic common sense, outdated, and I found that you can get better up to date info. by just doing research on the internet. There are many typos throughout the book and the author's credentials often contradict themselves if you pay close attention.I feel as if I clearly read this book closer then the editor or author ever did.Don't waste your time or money here.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must" for every homeowner
Home And Condo Defects: A Consumer Guide To Faulty Construction by Thomas and Rachel Miller offer the non-specialist general reader a wealth of information and resources designed specifically for homeowners, and presented in direct, straightforward language for the lay person. Its primary purpose is not a do-it-yourself repair book, but rather a guide to complex and variable legal codes covering what is a defect, what a homeowner's responsibilities are, the responsibilities of the insurance companies, and what to do if one is sued or forced to sue. An extremely practical book, Home And Condo Defects is a "must" for every homeowner stranded in today's increasingly complex and problematic legal system.

5-0 out of 5 stars San Francisco Chronicle, Dec. 16, 2001:
SF Chron: The Millers are attorneys whose firm has won many millions of dollars in awards from developers for construction defects. Their slender, soft-cover book guides the home buyer through the typically long and winding process. At its best, the book serves as translator for all of the legalese that confronts a consumer in search of relief for such problems as leaking roofs, toxic mold and cracked foundations. At its worst, the book underscores the need for attorneys, which, need I remind you, is what the Millers are. Yet they resist the temptation to say, "If we were representing you, we would. . . ." And they freely remind you that you can get much of the information in their book for a click of the mouse. The scoop is presented in both places in a fairly breezy, confidential, tete-a-tete style of writing that any reader would find accessible. For emphasis, each chapter ends with do's and -don'ts (about who can sue, what lawyers can argue, the role of insurance), which are recapped in the appendix. The appendix also answers 12 of the most-asked questions about construction defects, lists 11 "Trust me, I'm the builder" myths and outlines the top 15 reasons builders face construction defect lawsuits. No. 1 of the latter, by the way, is poor customer service. Which is the big reason why, if you suspect your home has defects, you will want to pick up a copy of this book. -- by Susan Fornoff ... Editorial Review

OK, you've won that lawsuit, and the judge went whole hog in awarding you damages beyond your wildest dreams. Now all you have to do is collect it from the guilty party, and there's the rub. There are an amazing number of ways for a defendant to avoid paying the awarded judgment, and this is the book to show you how to avoid being avoided. This may not be a fun, catchy book to read for pleasure--though like all of Nolo Press's books, it is written to be understood by a regular, non-lawyer type person--but if you face the daunting task of trying to collect a court judgment from someone trying to evade payment, this may be one of the best books you ever read! ...
