5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book - Recommended for anyone serious about good grades
I read this book right after trying to apply IRAC to my first midterm and doing horribly. After reading the first 50 pages I knew exactly what I did wrong and how I could have handled the question differently. I recommend also doing LEEWS as both methods are similar in that they teach you how to answer legal questions from both sides and arrive at a thoughtful response

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I bought this book prior to beginning law school on the advice of the summer reading list.Although I haven't gotten through even my first semester, already what I have read has really made things in class seem clearer and I feel much more confident for the exam.I wholly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding and comprehensive coverage of estate planning.
The book is so clearly written, with explanations followed by simple examples. It covers every aspect I could think of, with occasional advice that you could do this yourself, or sometimes that you really need a lawyer. If you have a substantial estate you will probably want to have an expert do the work. But you should read this book so you know what the expert is doing (or you could pay the expert $200-300 an hour to educate you on basics).Simply the best book Ihave read all year.

5-0 out of 5 stars All the legal tips, tricks and traps explained
Plenty of books impart the basics of how to work independently - but too few include all the legal tips, tricks and traps involved. WORKING FOR YOURSELF: LAW & TAXES FOR INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS, FREELANCERS & CONSULTANTS covers everything from setting appropriate fees and understanding how and when taxes are paid to limiting liability and getting paid. Record-keeping processes are simplified with sample logs and entry advice, chapters on how the IRS defines an independent contractor versus a paid employee are essential keys to keeping independent status, and advice on pricing and insurance offer key strategy-oriented tips and approaches. A 'must' for any who would work independently.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great straghtforward information and advice
I recently a started an S corp for my software contracting. The book is helpful and worth the price. It won't answer EVERY question you will have, but you probably should talk to a CPA for those anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Nolo Press Winner
My husband is an independent photographer, so the Nolo Press books are great for him, geared as they are to all those wishing to handle all the paperwork for themselves, instead of the usual array of lawyers, accountants, etc.He keeps it as a reference book and can easily turn to whatever subject he needs more information on.Well-written and easy to understand, as are all Nolo books, these books are wonderful to review periodically. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not for the solo lawyer; not about marketing, except for the author
I was disappointed by this book.I am a solo litigation attorney, and I read the book to get ideas on marketing. It gave me some ideas.Perhaps the most valuable idea was to focus more on customer service; Dahut has an interesting discussion about exactly what that means and how we can do it better.By and large, however, this is a book by and for big firm attorneys. It is about big firm angst and how it can be combated by hiring experts such as Dahut to do extensive consulting work for your firm.Dahut does not acknowledge, and does not care, that most attorneys are solos or work in small firms, and that we have very different issues than agonizing over whether we have lost our soul by conforming to much to dead firm culture.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strong ideas - useful and inspiring
This work is really true to its theme - it offers new perspectives on how to see business development and because of this new perspective, it makes the process very managable. I stongly recommend this book to anyone who is really serious about growing their practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Legal Guide / Reference
This book is incredibly thorough and it even points you to the relevant statutes in your state so you can look up the relevant laws. It is a great book. One thing to note is that all forms that you could want to edit are included on the CDROM as RTF files editable in any word processing program--a previous reviewer was wrong in saying that only PDF files were included on the CDROM.
1-0 out of 5 stars Unuseable PDF forms
This book seems to have a wealth of information and includes a CD with numerous forms, the Word documents are very useful. The PDF forms are not.The problem is none of them are editable. Why even include them? Why not creat them in Word format? This is unsatisfactory and a complete waste of time. Why even provide the forms electronically if you can't customize them, you might as well buy a book with the paper forms and photo copy them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very GOOD, BUT
This is a very good book, lots of charts and check lists and a CD, but it wasn't written by an attorney so even though it as written by a person with a degree in law, there is no practical layering experience behind it, so this is why I give this one 4 stars and not 5.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book...
I was interested in learning everything that I needed to know about setting up a nonprofit organization, step-by-step. I wanted to know the right questions to ask an attorney and do as much of the groundwork as possible to help save costs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Retire Secure-Solid Advice For All
Reading "Retire Secure" will not alone make you rich. However, if you read and follow Mr. Lange's advice, you will build wealth and then protect it to the fullest extent possible. The book outlines a very clear path to maximize savings using the most effective vehicle available to you. Then it goes on to provide a thorough roadmap to minimizing your tax consequences and maximizing your after tax returns. Finally the book provides several different strategies for passing along wealth to your heirs while once again factoring in the greedy hands of Uncle Sam. The author not only provides you with the theory, as many financial planners do, but backs up his recommendations with solid proofs and confirms them with amusing case studies. Overall this book is an excellent source for information on the use of retirement funds for wealth building and hopefully inheritance to pass on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for Advisors and Investors
James Lange's Retire Secure, offers great techniques to help persons planning for retirement. He is on the right track - to postpone and minimize the impact of taxes - in order to maximize the retiree's money and extend the spendable income. This book makes a valuable contribution to the field of personal finance - for both the consumers and the professional advisors who serve them.
5-0 out of 5 stars My Roadmap
I find James Lange's book to be excellant. When we want to go someplace we're not familiar with, who uses MapQuest? Why? It gives us the starting point and the ending point. This book gives so much valuable information. I'll be retiring in 10 to 11 years, so my interest is quite serious. I stumbled accross Mr. Lange's website and find that to also be a fine source of information. As a 'boomer' I'm amazed at what the internet has done for our culture i.e. sharing of information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
Well written, easy to understand with loads of advice and comfort for those going through the challenges of a custody battle. The author shares some of her own experiences and leaves you with a feeling of hopeful optimism.I consider this a must-read for any parent going through a divorce.I thought that her comments on dressing for court and behavior during separation were common sense, but perhaps there are some readers who would need to understand better how their image and demeanor affect a judge's perception of them as a parent.I would definitely recommend this book to anyone trying to gain custody of their children.

5-0 out of 5 stars What Every Woman Should Know About Divorce And Cusody
This is the most thorough and informative book on divorce issues that I have read.As a divorce attorney, I am always curious to know what other attorneys are thinking. Ms. Smith's perspective and commentary mirror much of my own experiences and conclusions. The book is easy to read and filled with relevant, realistic examples and practical advice.I highly recommend this book to both nonlawyers, who have a reason to learn about this subject and to lawyers so they can refine and expand their knowedge of the divorce process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Persuasive advice for lawyers
In Legally Speaking, Mr. Dempsey has created an invaluable guide for lawyers, and I suspect non-lawyers, who need to make presentations to small or large groups. His observations about the art of persuasion are both amusing and insightful. As Dempsey makes clear, talking is not the same as presenting. His focus on "making your case" gets right to the heart of what lawyers do for their clients.Dempsey really wants you to win your audience over and tells you quite clearly how to achieve that goal.Dempsey's comprehensive approach (40 principles!), covers every aspect of lawyers' presentation skills, but still leaves you with one unanswered question: "Can you do a book for non-lawyers?"

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book!
Where was this book when I was in law school? This is an exceptional overview of not only the tools but also the techniques attorneys so desperately need to communicate clearly. Dempsey not only tells you what you need to know to communicate concisely and with clarity (something far too few attorneys do) but he gives you practical advice you can immediately implement to enhance your speaking skills, regardless of the amount of speaking you do, or where you do it. The writing is engaging, entertaining and highly informative. There are hundreds of ideas and examples for every attorney. This should be required reading in for every law student and lawyer regardless of how often they speak-we need to do a better job and this book shows us how. This is the essential guide, written by an attorney for attorneys. Buy it now!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book actually deserves 10 stars!
Legally Speaking is a book that is almost too good to be true. Its information for masterful presentations provides breadth, depth, and enormous practical application. What's more, it is easy to read. The book is an excellent resource for anyone who needs to be a more effective communicator. David Dempsey has done an excellent job of laying out his outline in the contents. It is very easy to quickly turn to the information that is most needed in a given moment. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Become an Informed Driver
This book was very knowledgeable on the ways cops obtain your speed as well as the faults in the types of ways they obtain it. Along with using correct and "street" terminology, it talks about the different types of radar used to pick up your speed and how they obtain your speed by pacing you. There are MANY faults and this book just confirms my prior thoughts that tickets are purely a money making scam not only for the police but for the insurance agencies as well. If nothing else buy it to be prepared when you do get pulled over as it gives you good tips on how to get away from a ticket at this early stage to. 4 out of 5 only because it does not list laws from every state just some laws from some states.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best friend for pro se litigants in the strange land of law.
This is one of the best books I have read and enjoyed about pro se litigation. The large font, great white space, and properly displayed summary tables render the book easy to endure and utilize. The authors offer many proverbs and examples for lay people that alleviate the harshness of legal lingo. Moreover, they even translate the formal and non-technical English words into layman's language. For example, words such as "sanction, impeach, strike, motion, cross, re-cross, direct, and re-direct" are simplified to common readers to mean "punish, discredit, delete, request, and questioning of witnesses in different setting".

5-0 out of 5 stars One of those style books that ranscebds its genre.
I'm a lawyer who is considered a wordsmith by colleagues and judges. This is one of the most important books I've ever encountered.I was exposed to it in my first law school year's writing class, and its lessons have remained with me since.Banish the passive voice! (unless deliberately and thoughfully chosen and used). This is not merely a key to fluidity in writing, but in a sense a moral imperative.Actions are attributable to actors - they don't simply occur. If you're asserting an action took place, you and your reader should know who or what you claim set it in motion. This necessitates intellectual rigor and clarity. Also, I remember and have employed for twenty-five years Wydick's apt metaphor that good legal writing is like fine cabinetmaking: the skill of the craftsman is shown by the crafted joints not requiring glue, just as the quality of a piece of prose is shown by its lack of reliance on "glue words" (read the book).I've used the lessons of Wydick's brief book as a lawyer, writer and writing teacher.I've given it to colleagues, non-lawyers and young relatives.Their writing uniformly improved. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is THE book to read if you are Law School bound
I wasted my money on other books. The biggest waste of money was Law School Confidential. By Law in a Nutshell and don't waste your money on other books. It was terrific! It was even humorous.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy It, Borrow It, Just Get It.
The single best book that I have found which really does explain the study and practice of law, hence the title.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, not a must have
It is worth reading, but I believe that it should be read in addition to a couple of other books to prepare mentally for law school. The two others I went through are; How to succeed in law school (munneke) and The complete Law School Companion (deaver). ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Gates and Buffet aren't the only ones who need an estate plan
After dealing with the aftermath of my father's death, I resolved I was going to do things differently.I read a number of estate planning books, but Cornwall's was far and away the most helpful. Written in simple layman's language, Everything a Baby Boomer Should Know demystifies the legal process. The book is also refreshing because the author discusses real-life topics. You think you have complex family issues?Consider what Bonanza's Ben Cartwright would face in today's legal environment. These are the types of clever examples Cornwall laces through the chapters.I can't afford the kind of legal muscle Gates and Buffet have, but I can certainly follow their example by knowing all my options and taking charge of my legacy. This book is definitely one of the most informative and easiest to read books on this topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Need This Book
As a CPA I marvel at two things:First, the amount of wealth that is being transferred from the Greatest Generation to their children, the Baby Boomers, and how much of that wealth will be added to and passed on to the Boomer's children.Second, how many estates are badly planned (or not at all) under the impression that "we're not rich, so we don't need to do anything".(Guess what: if your estate consists of a modest house and/or an IRA, the systems of probate and estate taxes may consider you very rich!).
5-0 out of 5 stars The flow charts make estate planning come to life
Everything a Baby Boomer Should Know, simply put, is an extremely well thought out estate planning guide.I found Mark Cornwall's book to be extremely intuitive, shedding light on estate planning in a fun easy to understand format. From the very first moment I picked up the book and flipped through a few pages landing on one of the many lively flow charts things started to make sense.
