Excellent Book
I highly recommend this book for those of you who are taking Real Estate classes and also first time home buyers.Edith Lank gives a clear understanding of each chapter; there's also a practice exam after each chapter.This book is my bible for Real Estate!

Relevant and Very Helpful
I studied the material presented within this book for three weeks prior to the exam and passed by an extremely comfortable margin.I did not find the kind of contradictions mentioned in the other review.This was the only source I relied upon in preparation for the exam.

Poor quality
I have the 10th edition of this book. I'm studying it now for the Series 65 and find myself cursing every 3rd page or so. There are multiple typos, grammatical errors, and mis-spelled words. Even worse, a lot of the text doesn't make any sense. A subsequent paragraph often contradicts its predecessor, for example. I'm waiting until I finish it to call Dearborn's "help line" with all of my questions. It will probably take an hour to get through all of them. I do not recommend Dearborn's publications and wish that someone would kick them out of this market. Dearborn's editors are welcome to hire me to summarize all of the problems I found with this book. ... Read more

Good Basic Info But Non-Specific
I probably had the wrong expectations for this book but I was hoping it would (quickly) help me validate whether info I've used required permission.I suppose it did this in an indirect way, however, the free use stuff included old songs etc. that were not appropriate for my topic.
Excellent, practical advice
I made the mistake of buying the first edition of this book (published in 2001), but found it to be an excellent guide to the legal issues involved with public domain textual material.I have already published one book which relied heavily on public domain materials, and am working on a second, and when I bought this book I had several specific questions that I was trying to answer.This book answered all of them, as well as some that I hadn't thought of!I'll probably end up buying the second edition, just to see what has changed in the last few years.

One of the most useful books I have ever encountered
This fat and informative book is a goldmine for anyone interested in public domain works, whether writings, music, art, films or just about anything else. The author, Attorney Stephen Fishman, begins with an examination of copyright laws and the public domain. After that, the book begins each of the chapters on copyrightable materials with a handy checklist for use in determining public domain status, and then launches into a discussion of how to determine the public domain status of such an item. After those useful chapters, the author examines the use of copyrighted and public domain works.Read more

Excellent and Practical
We used this textbook in our MBA level Business Law course. This book is an excellent resource for understanding business law from a corporate finance angle. The book is well organized and very useful as reference to any corporate manager or executive. I highly recommend it.

Some good thoughts but overoptimistic

California Landlord's Law Book is a must!
I have been a landlord for 12 years. Every few years I purchase a revised version just to be sure that laws haven't changed that I should know about. This book is a must if you have rentals in California. It is very easy to understand, it has all the forms you may need on CD and can be referred to quickly when questions come up. I feel I am a better landlord because of this book. I have also loaned it to my friends when they felt that their landlord had not be treating them fairly. They also found it very helpful. I wouldn't be without it.

Very useful and practical handbook for Landlords
I read through the book before renting my place, and it provided me with very useful tips on the legality of various aspects of renting one's place. It also had templates and forms which were very handy, in drawing up a lease, issuing a receipt or generating a checklist. I would recommend this book for any landlord, whether you are renting out one house or multiple.

Great information for first time California Landlord
This was the only book I needed to become a landlord in California. With the included forms on CD, I was able to easily create a lease for my tenants and feel confident that I was doing everything legally. The BEST book on Patent Law
This is undoubtedly the BEST book on Patent Law. It is written so well that you could read it as a bed time story. It's name couldn't be more accurate -- "Essentials" -- that's ALL it is. No fluff, no distractions. Just pure distilled patent law principles and concepts. There's a reason this book sells for $100. It would be worth buying at twice that cost. I highly recommend it.

An invaluable resource for starting a non-profit in CA
This was an excellent book, very well written for the layperson. The online links to further instruction and the CDROM were fabulous tools. I highly recommend this to an start-up non-profit.

Excellent Step by Step Guide to Forming Your Non-Profit
This book is an excellent step by step guide for starting your non-profit corporation in California. The author does a lot of hand holding, which is especially helpful when it comes to filing your 1023 with the IRS which establishes your tax exempt status as a 501(c)(3) organization.
So far so good
This book has gotten us through filing papers with the Secretary of State. I haven't gotten into writing bylaws and filing tax forms yet--which should be much more challenging--but from skimming over those sections, I think I should be able to manage. I expect this book will have saved us hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in lawyer and accountant fees by the time our nonprofit is up and running. ... Read more

Just What the Doctor Ordered
This is an excellent book.It answered all of my questions about handling my estate, and it answered many questions that never occurred to me.The writing is straightforward and easily understood.The title is THE AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION GUIDE TO WILLS AND TRUSTS, but it covers a good deal more:steps to help your family now; estate plans; avoiding or reducing estate taxes; transferring property without a will; securing long-term care help; and many other topics relating to managing your estate and passing it on to your heirs.This is a very useful book.

The American Bar Association wants you confused.
Don't be a sucker. The ABA is not going to help you understand the probate or non-probate system.I have been a lawyer for over twenrty years, and I can't understand what they are trying to say.They want you to give up rather than understand the tools of estate planning.I am the author of "Everything A Baby Boomer Should Know -- An Insider's Guide To Estate Planning."Compare it to the contents of this ABA book.The difference is that the ABA book is nothing more than another textbook that speaks over your head.Read my book and truly understand how the system works for you.I promise.

Great Paralegal Reference!
This is the first "for Dummies" book that I have purchased and I must say it is great for the beginning paralegal student as well as a paralegal graduate students. This book is a great refresher!When I purchased the book I was able to recap legal research and writing courses that I had completed a couple semesters ago. I was in the process of taking business law and ethics and this book helped me to understand the basics of the two courses I was about to explore as well as refreshed my memory on past courses.I will refer back to this book as a reference.This book really does cover EVERYTHING THERE IS TO KNOW about the paralegal profession!!!

Great software.Simple to use.The legal team at Quicken/NOLO appear to constantly be surveying the legal findings in the courts and automaticly push the implications into the software as updates.The best part is that as the laws change, the software alerts you when you need to reprint and resign your legal documents so that they comply with the latest laws.It is the perfect balance of accurate legal advice at a very fair price.
