5-0 out of 5 stars Engrossing and illuminating book
Witt's book is the best of its kind -- it illuminates the history and legal developments of the turn-of-the-century modern factories and their beleagured workers with stories of the historical players, the thinkers, and the judges and legislators.Witt is accessible to all and I have not stopped thinking about the book and its significance to today's tort laws since. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Legal History
This is a neat history of the Somerset Case, the 1772 English court case that outlawed slavery in the United Kingdom (but not in the British Empire). The case was epochal, and, for that reason alone, readers interested in legal history should read this book.Unfortunately, the narrative is a bit convoluted and weighed down with too many unnecessary details and too much 18th century British legal lore, as if the author felt he had to use everything he turned up during his research. That's too bad.Otherwise, the book is highly recommended.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent legal history of the battle to abolish slavery
Dr. Wise writes in a story telling manner that is easy to read and understand. He tells the legal history of the battle to abolish slavery as it developed a couple of centuries before Abe Lincoln's Emancipation Act speech in the United States. He lets the readers understand the evolutionary factors of the alive world of law, and learn facts about slavery abolishment that many may not know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great research on an important case
As on reads this book we know the author has done a careful and excellent job of research in records which it is great still exist.Somerset's case was decided June 22, 1772 by Lord Mansfield and was a vital step to the eventual ending of slavery. This book is so meticulously researched, with careful citations of every case mentioned, that it is a joy to read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Is atonement possible?
This book is an eminently readable account of the disasters which befell the Arikara,Hidatsa and Mandan tribes when they were displaced by the damning of the Missouri.
5-0 out of 5 stars Coyote Warrier: One Man, Three Tribes, and the Trial That Forged a Nation
An extraordinary look at the forces that disenfrnchised an Indian Nation from its heritage and its land. An insightful look into the destructive forces that rend family and community ties when frderal policies that de-humanize Native people are allowed to be implemented behind one man's ego, and a government's indifference. It is an all too familiar story -- well told -- of disenfranchisement of Indian people and governments. And finally, a story of the courage and incredible intellect of one families battle against irresistible forces.

5-0 out of 5 stars An exceptional introduction to Indian legal rights and more
I have published an award-winning law review article on Federal Indian Law, worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (until I couldn't hold my nose any longer), and had the great good luck to learn Indian Law from Prof. Raymond Cross at The University of Montana School of Law.But Paul VanDevelder taught me new things about all three.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Review of Judicial History
Because the political philosophy of our fathers is rooted in a combination of Lockean and Hobbesian philosophy, the initial Federal government's role was basically defense, foreign policy, and refereeing interstate commerce. It was not to provide for needs such as retirement, health, food assistance, farm support, or recreation.Yet, today the federal government is involved in all these activities, and over time, individual property rights have been highly compromised, and personal responsibility is no longer an legally binding.

4-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading for any Student of the Law or Anybody who need something new to read.
Gerald Stern is the lead lawyer for over 600 plaintiffs who weree suing the West Virginia coal company and their sole corporate stock holder, another corporation in New York over the flooding that killed several dozens people and leave hundreds homeless. This book not only recount the stories of the Buffalo Creek disaster in vivid details, but it explore in-depth the civil proceeding the follow the incident. Stern shows his readers in-depth the process of litigation and legal- and sometime extra-legal- tactics that lawyers employ to their advantage. This book would be an unconventional reading for law classes where students are force to study cases their ruling and the legal theory behind it, instead Stern demonstrate the real life strategy of attacks and defenses that lawyer employed. It range from how to pick a judge (and the heavy research that went behind it,) to suing through the corporate veil and going at the stock holder for compensation, and to the negotiating a settlement, and where to balance the ego of the lawyer and the benefits for their clients. Stern wrote in a non-technical style that anyone could jump in and still find it fulfilling. This is a highly enjoyable read and an enriching experience to understand the modern litigation process, it won't made lawyer out of us but it will help us know what they think.

5-0 out of 5 stars There are lawyers who do good
I was assigned to read this for my Civil Procedure class in law school.Although I dreaded reading it, once I started, I could not put it down.As a law student (or if you are a lawyer for that matter), this was a great insight into how a lawsuit is constructed on such a grand scale.Even if you have no interest in law, Stern manages to tell such a compelling story, I would recomend this book to anyone. It provides great insight into the operations of a corrupt coal company, a state and region at the industry's mercy, and people who felt helpless when their lives were destroyed by the mining company's negligence and the state's oversight.A definite must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Engrossing Real-Life Legal Drama
Even though the subtitle gives away the ending, you won't be able to put this one down as the author leads you to one clue after the other that bring down a corrupt company and give new life to a community ripped to shreds. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An important analysis of censorship "for children's sake"
This book is a responsible and important study of how we rationalize censorship policies to "protect" children. The interests at stake here are as obvious as they are important. The freedom of expression has long been considered the touchstone of individual liberty and, in turn, democracy. Legally, we have enacted many safeguards to protect this essential aspect of our society, and continue to give mouth service to its importance. But, even as we tout the importance of such personal freedoms, both overseas and on American soil, we are sadly failing in one critical respect:we are not instilling these values in our children.Instead, we are showing them that an authoritative regime may censor and punish unpopular or offensive speech in the name of safety and conformity. We lecture students over the values of the freedom of speech while allowing schools inappropriately broad latitude in declaring student behavior inappropriate or dangerous if it even references violent or sexual themes.Anything considered "sexual" in nature is censored from school life entirely, and even sexual education classes suffer in their ability to inform and protect students.
4-0 out of 5 stars Protectionism is Harmful to Minors
Though the scholarly discussions of legal cases were trying (pardon the pun) to get through, they were worth the effort. They helped to dramatize the incredible amounts of time, energy, and emotion misplaced in the "harm to minors" protectionism racket.Due to her civil libertarian background, I was surprised to see her frequent attempts to present (or at least understand) both sides.3-0 out of 5 stars Author Brought up Good Issues
My reading group chose this book, because we felt that there weren't many books out there that focused on the topic of censorship and the protection of children and innocence. But while she brings up many issues that shows censorship as troublesome, she addresses them in such a dry manner that it became harder to read as the book became more or a summary of all the court cases there have been regarding the issues. It would be a great book for a communication or law class, but for recreational reading, it was very difficult for us as readers to get to the end of the book. ...
