Well written, interesting, and easy to read
I am a student at SUNY Binghamton and have been tought by Professor Arthur.This particular book I have dissected for two classes, and tought as a TA for one class.This book consists of articles written by suchphilosophers as Dworkin, Hart, etc as well as brief summaries and questionsfor each. Biased
This book is chalk full of biases and fallacies - especially regarding gun ownership.
Required text for a course
I don't actually believe in sociology and I think Mr. Thio's reasoning is mushy at many points.If you're thinking of paying full-price at your campus bookstore for the current edition, think again.The author mainly updates the pictures each year and tosses in a few new references - if you buy a coffee for the guy next to you he'll probably let you skim his new addition before the exam.

Biased book
I did not care for the subject matter in this book in part because everyone is deviant by the standards of the power elite (except for the power of elite). Homocides are donw by poor minorities, homosexuals are sexually deviants, and the list continues. The book is one sided throughout even down to the last chapters regardingpeople that are over weight. Helpfull with other sources
I do like this book since it does cover a lot of material for the paralegal which helps with leagal research and writing. The problem is in the writing style of the text, it truly will make you fall asleep. There are alsop a lack of useable diagrams when it come to writing law office memos. The formats however are presented rather well and I would reccomend this text to a paralegal to use as a reference but look into other materials which help aswell such as QUICK STUDY LAW LEGAL WRITING BAR CHART. ... I agree with the above review
The authors of this book are truely using this "text" as a platform to preach their ideals.The authors about how unfair the U.S. system is and how it is going to change to conform to their views (this will never happen)is sickening.
Not as textbook, but a liberal manifesto
As a Criminal Justice instructor who has reviewed this text (and almost had to use it) I cannot recommend this book.It portends to be a book about solutions, when in fact it essentially attacks every aspect of policing and the criminal justice system as it exists today, and the only solutions it provides are from the left to far left.There is no balance of opinion, no counter-point, and absolutely no effort on the part of the authors to inform students that they are in fact only getting one side of the issue.Far too often do I see this approach by liberal writers and educators: attempting to pass off their out of the mainstream ideas as fact.College is a marketplace of ideas, discussion, and debate.However, this book turns the debate into a one sided discussion on how awful and wholly without merit the current system is.I am not one as a CJ educator that believes we are to be cheerleaders for law enforcement.However, we do need to present the good with the bad, and this book would do nothing but discourage would-be law enforcement professionals.If the goal is to make such persons believe the profession they are about to enter into is completely corrupt and without merit, this is the "test" to use.If forced to use this book, I would suggest supplementing it with articles or texts that offer a counterpoint.That is, if you are interested in giving your students both sides of the issue - which I believe we as educators are charged to do, not just simply indoctrinate them with the opinions of those with whom you might agree.This book is nothing more than an attempt to indoctrinate, not foster intelligent debate and discussion on the topics contained therein. time-tested excellence
I remember getting an earlier rendition of this book when I was in grade school, and now while in law school, it still comes in handy. If you are in any class or position where you need to write letters, compositions or just about anything else, you need this book. It will tell you when to use what word, when not to use what word, and is easy to use. Can't beat it!

Great reference, very friendly.
The Redbook is a great have-by-your-side manual for legal or other writing.

Should be on all attorneys' book shelves
As a gramarian and etymologist by avocation, my tastes are a bit weird.Maybe that's why I actually enjoyed reading this bookcasually.Each of Garner's books belongs on the bookshelf of any attorney who considers himself a professional.My pet peeve is the attorney who I know is writing to impress the reader with his writing skills as opposed to the attorney who is writing to persuade the reader.The former will not have Garner's books in his library. ... Extremely Useful
I'm starting my second year of law school. I got this book near the end of my first year, and it proved to be an invaluable tool for editing journals and working for law firms over the summer. I wish I had this earlier.
The Best
This is, by far, the single best resource on legal usage one can buy.I never cease to be amazed at how often I pull this book off of my shelf to find it giving me a clear and accurate answer to a usage question.I purchased this book several years ago after attending one of Garner's legal writing seminars.That seminar and this book have dramatically improved my legal writing skills.Those two tools positively influence my writing every single day.If you follow Garner's advice and guidance, you will eliminate deadening and condescending legalese from your legal writing and replace it with clear and concise prose.My clients appreciate receiving contracts that are actually readable and my contracts are less frequently subject to alternative interpretations because ambiguities are largely eliminated.As a lawyer or paralegal, do yourself a favor and buy this book.Better yet, buy this book and take Garner's Advanced Legal Drafting seminar.You won't regret it.
