5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite MacKinnon Text (so far)
Wow.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Rosetta of Social Constructivist Radical Feminism
This eloquent book is a collection of insightful orations given by Ms. MacKinnon during the eighties with in their aggregation is a powerful text on social constructivist Radical Feminism and class analysis. Ms. MacKinnon's approaches provide needed shifts in paradigms away from patriarchy. Gender is understood in terms of the the only meaning it can have in this society: Dominance of one class over another. She provide incredible distinctions and indepth discussions on issues such as Full and Formal Equity, definitions and meaning of rape and pornography.4-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking
How much you appreciate this book depends on what you want to get out of it. It is accessible to anon-academic reader, and although I disagree with her thesis, the speeches are well-argued. She basically thinks thatgender *is* domination, and attempts to show that the meaning of woman-nessis in subjection. Ithink that if you care about feminism, you must atleast understand this radical claim. She has definately made me rethinksome of my kneejerk assumptions, which after all is the whole point. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Decent book on black women lawyers
Smith is a black male law professor at Howard University. He selects documents which discuss black women in the law from the time that the first sister was sworn in to the present. This book has great statistical facts and is a good tool for arguing why affirmative action is necessary in law schools. However, I would have preferred if a historian had written this book.As it stands, this is just a scrapbook that included selected writings on the topic. There is much academic literature on women in the law and blacks in the law and it is not incorporated well into this book.In addition, there are a number of incredible black, female law professors out there and their work on black women's legal issues barely gets addressed here.In brief, this book is a nice piece to have, but it could have been better. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars this book will improve everyone's life
The US judicial system is unbalanced in favor of men.MacKinnon discusses this problem, the obvious as well as the more subtle aspects. Also, there is much discussion about sexual abuse of women and children, in particular how pornography increases this abuse.
5-0 out of 5 stars My first MacKinnon reading!
This book is a collection of legal authority Catherine A. Mackinnon's writings from journals and talks that span the last couple of decades. As someone who knows next to nothing about law, Mackinnon's readings are the closest I plant to travel in versing myself about our lovely Constitution. Yet, I was still able to plow through this book (somehow), and learned quite a bit, while at it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Arguing past each other
Philippa Strum's sympathies clearly lie with those who argued for admitting women to the Virginia Military Institute. However, they haven't prevented her from giving us a comprehensive and fairly balanced look at the VMI case from start to ... if not finish, at least to the graduation of the first women to begin the school in the rat line.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The power plays underlying sexual harassment at work
Sexual harassment in the workplace may not be as easily identified as leering moves on the parts of supervisors and co-workers: it's also a power play and individuals need help to get back in control. That's why SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN THE WORKPLACE is so important: it defines and outlines different forms of such harassment, tells how to prevent it and how to file an effective complaint, and how to work with a lawyer and an employer. From compiling the initial report to escalating the complaint, SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN THE WORKPLACE walks you through every move. An essential guide to making the right moves and understanding the law.
5-0 out of 5 stars How To Stop Harassment
The primary U.S. law regarding sexual conduct in the workplace, which Congress enacted in 1964, has had a profound impact on American society and business. Attorney Mary L. Boland's comprehensive handbook tells employers and employees how to define and prevent this problem and explains what to do if you are a victim. She provides the right level of detail for nonlawyers, pointing out the kinds of issues, conditions and events that can trigger a complaint. The book is readable and clearly organized, with sections that explain employer responsibilities, legal resources and remedies - from filing a lawsuit to arbitration and mediation. Four appendices and a glossary add valuable information. We highly recommend this lucid, practical book to human resource managers, executives, small business owners and employees at every level, particularly victims of sexual harassment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Assistant Professor of Sociology, Princeton University
Saguy's book accomplishes much and does so in an accessible and sophisticated way.I have used it to teach my undergraduates in an introductory gender course and they found it compelling and powerful. For them it opens up a black box of taken for granted assumptions about the relationship between gender and policy. It shows how gender shapes cultural and institutional arrangements, which in turn influences policy form and implementation, which in turn affects policy impacts and social change. The study does so with thoughtful analyses of indepth interviews of lawyers and human resource personnel, media analyses, and key informant interviews. My undergraduates thoroughly enjoyed the book and frequently referred to it in later discussions and essays. It had clearly impressed them.I will certainly use it in future courses.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
In this pathbreaking comparative study, Saguy sheds light on a crucial aspect of the lives of many working women by analyzing the various frames through which sexual harassment is understood in two national contexts. While norms against sexual harassment are growing deeper roots in the American workplace, accusations of sexual improprieties remain often the object of ridicule in France. Saguy's explanation of this and other differences goes beyond traditional culturalist models. The beauty of her analysis is to capture some of the ways in which sexuality is used to gain power in the workplace, and the role played by cultural frameworks in mediating these modalities."--Michele Lamont, co-author of Rethinking Comparative Cultural Sociology: Repertoires of Evaluation in France and the United States

5-0 out of 5 stars Interdisciplinary legal scholarship at its best
For more than 100 years, starting with Oliver Wendell Holmes' famous essay "The Path of the Law," American legal scholars have bemoaned the lack of a serious sociological jurisprudence, that would treat law as a social phenomenon, rather than as a conceptual game or an opportunity to indulge in covert advocacy disguised as scholarship.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating study that draws upon individual testimony
Sociology professor Cynthia Siemsen presents Emotional Trials: The Moral Dilemmas Of Women Criminal Defense Attorneys, a scholarly study of how female defense attorneys deal with the inherent conflicts of representing individuals accused of violent crimes such as rape, domestic abuse, and child molestation. Proposing that the roles and identities of female criminal defense attorneys evolve through three distinct stages - early, mid, and seasoned - Emotional Trials is a fascinating study that draws upon individual testimony and psychological theory to explain the the intense pressures that individuals undertake and how they cope. A fascinating and welcome contribution to ethical and legal discussions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Book That Supports Freedom of Speech and Sex-Positive Feminism
As the long time president of the "American Civil Liberties Union," Nadine Strossen is one of my heroes. This book is a powerfully reasoned and completely honest assessment of pornography and why it should be protected as free speech. However, Strossen goes beyond the basic First Amendment arguments to discuss the reality of sexually expressive material and the benefits it can hold for our society, including women who are now breaking free from the chains of puritanism and double standards while expressing themselves sexually. She also provides many examples and comments from anti-censorship feminists such as Nina Hartley and Molly Ivins. Heck, even a writer I remember from my childhood - Judy Blume - provides quotes about the dangers of censorship.
1-0 out of 5 stars Anti-freedom of speech book, poor panicky work
If I could give it zero stars, I would.5-0 out of 5 stars Hurray for Free Speech!
With some concern about ten years ago I began hearing about a group of feminists who were campaigning against pornography.Catherine MacKinnon, one of the leaders, wrote, "Pornography, in the feminist view, is a form of forced sex... an institution of gender inequality... [P]ornography, with the rape and prostitution in which it participates, institutionalizes the sexuality of male supremacy."MacKinnon teamed up with another feminist, Andrea Dworkin, who has spouted a remarkable range of anti-sex rants: "Intercourse with men as we know them is increasingly impossible... It means remaining the victim... It means acting out the female role, incorporating the masochism, self-hatred, and passivity which are central to it."The MacDworkinites, as they are called, might be considered by some just a branch of feminists that are even more radical than their sisters, but the problem is that they are eager to chip away at the First Amendment.Read more
