5-0 out of 5 stars The consensual crimes reference book
This book is THE definitive guide to consenual crimes and why laws against them are a bad idea.
4-0 out of 5 stars On my "must read" list
A thoughtful response to the laws that make criminal various consenual acts in our culture, why they exist, and challenges us to consider the cost to our country of incarcerating people for non-violent crimes. I picked up the book especially for his well-thought discussions on sex and sex crimes. Sadly, McWilliams lost a battle to use medical marijuana as an anti-nausea drug to balance out the regime of medication he was taking for AIDS and cancer. Despite growing his own marijuana in a state where it was legal to do so, the federal government raided his house, and a federal judge refused to hear his case. Without the marijuana to ease his nausea, McWilliams choked on his own vomit and died in 2000, a victim of the War on Drugs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good...
Perhaps I received an earlier version of the book, but the edition I read contained a myriad of typographical errors.Overall, the content of the book was great.McWilliams presents basic truths that most people won't accept about themselves and society; however, he does this in a typical libertarian style. This style is a rant. While he does cite many references and provide opportunities for further research, his tone is far from academic. If this book were turned in as a thesis, it would fail, but on the other hand it is one of the least dry books I have read in a long while.McWilliams is funny and practical!I highly recommend the book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Keep Reading Books by Sitting Supreme Court Justices
I think that it is good to read widely and get divergent perspectives. Thus, Christians and Jews should read the Quran and Muslims should read the Torah and the New Testament.Conservatives should read the Nation or the New Republic and visit the DailyKos website and liberals should read the Weekly Standard or National Review and visit RealClearPolitics. The same perspective applies with Breyer's book.Regardless of your perspective, you should read this brief and easily understandable statement of judicial philosophy from a sitting Supreme Court justice.(And, it would also be good to read the counterpoint from Justice Breyer for the same reasons.)
3-0 out of 5 stars Buy it for the appendices, not the text
Even after trying to put to one side whatever opinion one has of Justice Scalia as a judge - something that, for example, the WSJ reviewer plainly couldn't manage, rating or reviewing this book poses (at least) two difficulties:
5-0 out of 5 stars Exposes the Modus Operendi of Result Oriented Jurists
Great read.Scalia exposes the deceptive means by which activist judges often cloak their misdeeds, relying upon supposed rules of construction or plumbing the legislative record in a feigned effort to discern the "intent" of the legislature, when in reality the courts are often using these interpretive tools to "sanctify" judicial mischief, that is to say, conceal their true purpose of reaching their preferred result. At times providing historical examples, he leaves the activists naked and embarrassed.Come take a peak. ... Editorial Review

Confident in his opinions and systematic in his examination of high-profile whodunits, FBI veteran John Douglas proves his worth once again as one of the world's best psychological detectives. You may think you've read all there is about Jack the Ripper, Lizzie Borden, and the Lindbergh kidnapping, but Douglas has a few surprise conclusions in his modern analysis of these gripping crimes. By applying criminal personality profiling techniques he developed while stalking more current killers, Douglas provides a fresh, sage outlook on some disturbing history. He also sheds new light on San Francisco's Zodiac Killer, the Black Dahlia murder, Bambi Bembenek, the Boston Strangler, and the continuing mystery of who killed 6-year-old JonBenét Ramsey. Douglas sometimes reveals his chief suspect; other times he simply narrows down who the killer is not. In the JonBenét mystery (in which Douglas was hired by the Ramseys to find the killer), he presents a convincing case for why he believes the girl's parents are not guilty of murder. Douglas is founder of the FBI's Serial Killer Profiling Unit. His method of solving a crime by entering the mind of the killer inspired Thomas Harris's book Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars General Overview of Bizarre Cases, too obtuse for crime scholars.
A Dummy's Guide to Understanding Bizarre Murder Cases.-I would read this if you were a new immigrant to the Western world. So, i would look around for weightier books ,on a specific crime topic. This book is too broad and not informative enough .The reason why these cases haunt the FBI is that they need to turn on the light-switch.

1-0 out of 5 stars very disappointing
The description of JonBenet Ramsey case is very lengthy, detailed and so boooooring (already known from the media !)
4-0 out of 5 stars chilling & sad
This book gives an inside look into some of histories most watched cases. Written from the perspective of those on the inside you get a look into what its like to have to deal with these horrors first hand. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Illuminating tales of wrongdoing
I rate this book very highly indeed. Whilst it is clearly targeted at lawyers and law students, James Kelley has not gone down the traditional route of producing a legal ethics/professional responsibility casebook - and his book is all the more likely to be read from cover to cover for that.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A scary subject was made understandable.
When I went to law school, I was told to avoid conflicts like the plague. This lecture series helped alleve (sp?) my fears. If you have an understanding of civil procedure, you can get the gist of this subject. The lecturer has a dead-pan voice that may turn off some listeners. Also, so many of the most exemplary cases involve out-of-state car fatalities and divorce cases, so be prepared to be depressed.Still, I found these tapes useful.I'm a little concerned that the professor could have added more material.Still, I found his lecture to be a valuable study aid. ... An excellent analysis of how the Justices of the Supreme Court decidewhether or not a law (created by Congress or the States) is valid or not. More than just a compilation of majority, concurring and dissentingopinions, this book looks at why the decisions were made, not just what thedecisions were.Well worth the money and a fine addition to the library ofanyone interested in law or the legislative process. ...
