5-0 out of 5 stars The best friend for pro se litigants in the strange land of law.
This is one of the best books I have read and enjoyed about pro se litigation. The large font, great white space, and properly displayed summary tables render the book easy to endure and utilize. The authors offer many proverbs and examples for lay people that alleviate the harshness of legal lingo. Moreover, they even translate the formal and non-technical English words into layman's language. For example, words such as "sanction, impeach, strike, motion, cross, re-cross, direct, and re-direct" are simplified to common readers to mean "punish, discredit, delete, request, and questioning of witnesses in different setting".

5-0 out of 5 stars Unveiling the links.
The way corporates do governance is linked to the political makeup of their home countries, argues Peter Gourevitch and James Shinn in their important new book. Practices can't be imposed successfully from the outside or homogenized to some global standard; they bubble up from politics and pressures on the ground. Gourevitch, a political scientist at the University of California, San Diego and Shinn, ex-CEO of Dialogic and now visiting professor at Georgetown University, uncover complex relationships between key market players. Are workers and investors natural allies, for instance? Well, in markets where job protection laws are widespread, safeguards for investors are weak. On the other hand, global capital moves like a magnet to companies and markets that feature the most minority shareowner protection-thus creating jobs. Read this to find the web of ties to political power that promises global diversity in governance practices for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking Guide on the Direction of Corporate Governance and Society
According to Gourevitch and Shinn, "corporate governance - the authority structure of a firm - lies at the heart of the most important issues of society"... such as "who has claim to the cash flow of the firm, who has a say in its strategy and its allocation of resources."

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening, Fun & Important Read
It's a dense and fun work in a very interesting and important topic. It was my first book on law&economics, and I am very satisfied with it. I highly recommend it especially for those who love economics--you will learn fascinating insights. The chapters on tort and criminal law were my favorites. David Friedman is a great teacher, in print or talk (if you haven't seen him speak, don't miss a chance).

5-0 out of 5 stars Should Voodoo practice be punishable?
As soon as I was finished with this book, I turned around and read it again.Friedman is picking up a theme that he introduced towards the end of the revised Machinery of Freedom, in which he states that in order to understand certain mechanisms, we must undertake the economic analysis of law. This discipline was generally considered to have been initiated by Ronald Coase and taken up and popularized by Richard Posner.Friedman's own work advances the study into areas of law that relate to the internet and computers.4-0 out of 5 stars interesting read, annoying footnote approach
Liked the book. But instead of using citations and footnotes, he uses icons that point to his web site. This is supposed to be make it easier to read, but it's very annoying. I hope this doesn't become a trend. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good enough for me
Barron's "Dictionary of Legal Terms" is a solid text. When I asked a law friend of mine which law dictionary I should purchase he told me that "Black's" was the best law dictionary out there. However, it is rather expensive at eighty or so dollars. Even the pocket version of the text is at least twenty dollars. So I sprang for this law dictionary at about eight dollars.
5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for everyone
Legal terms presented in a way that can be understood by all.Very helpful information in section-"KEY TO EFFECTIVE USE OF THIS DICTIONARY"

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this dictionary!
I bought this dictionary 4 years ago and since then it has been invaluable to me in getting through law school and the bar exam. My copy is so tattered and worn out, I'm thinking of buying a new one to replace it. I highly recommend it over Black's and others that have traditionally been regarded essential for law students and lawyers. Too often with the other legal dictionaries, you look up a word, and then to understand the given definition you end up having to look up additional words. Not so with this book--it lays out legal definitions in the most simple and straightforward manner possible. For many terms, it even gives short hypotheticals to illustrate the term in its proper context.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrified and terrifying
Prof. Chandler gives us a remarkably deep analysis of Pol Pot's secret prison S-21, which within the autogenocide of the Cambodian people stands out as a haunting symbol. It reflected the unlimited paranoia of Angkar and its schizophrenic regime that 'was at once terrified and terrifying, omnipotent and continually under threat'.3-0 out of 5 stars Disturbing
David Chandler has made extensive use of the archives of S-21, with photographs and "confessions" to show the absurd paranoia of the leaders in Democratic Kampuchea. An excellent book, with some aspects that put me off, though: blunt anticommunism, some assertions about Soviet, Chinese and Vietnamese leaders that are rather anecdotal than based on serious historic scholarship, and weird comparisons between the turturers at S-21 and psychoanalysts.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Psychology of Horror
David Chandler's "Voices from S-21: Terror and History in Pol Pot's Secret Prison" is a good book for a novice like me. Chandler starts by framing the book around the S-21 institution and its configuration. Chandler then dedicates and entire portion to the memoirs of the purges; the allegation santebal leveled at prisoners; and the various approaches of "politics" and"torture." The book concludes with short commentary of the "why" of S-21. Chandler's "Voices from S-21" is effectively a detailed history of the inner workings of the Khmer Rouge's secret police. Known as "santebal", and working out of a prison complex called S-21, the Khmer Rouge killed, tortured and interrogated "enemies" of the Democratic Kampuchea (DK). Due to the secretive nature of the Khmer Rouge, S-21 was "the place where people went in but never came out" (p. 7) - and this is an important issue to consider. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars This Book Tries to Do the Impossible
Prison is a mean ugly horrible place. The rules are all subjective until someone wants them to be otherwise.Prison is about politics not justice in America.Prison is about so much more than just what what happens in the court room.
2-0 out of 5 stars The impossible write
I picked this book up at a second hand store because the title intrigued me. The book appropriately and realistically interprets the legal & correctional system as a beast that is to be both feared and confronted. The authors pull no punches and blatantly discuss the dishonesty, apathy and agenda-driven decisions that taint the legal system. Individuals faced with the prospect of going to prison need to understand what they can expect, and more importantly what they cannot expect (expediency, fairness, empathy) from the legal system in America.

I am a Criminology and Criminal Justice student finishing my sophomore year this month. 5-0 out of 5 stars I Knew Vic Oboyski in Germany
In 1970 - 1972 I had the privilege of working with Victor Oboyski. Robert Sabbag's book captures the essence of that fine Military Policeman. The rest of the book provides an exciting look into the world of law enforcement and the US Marshal Service. The book is worth the price just to read of Vic's entry methods. PS Ask Vic about SMLM!

5-0 out of 5 stars Marxism: Dormant, but not dead
I can think of no other book, fiction or nonfiction, that has so captured the evil we faced from the Soviet Union. Orwell accomplished much with 1984 and Animal Farm, but here we have something much more valuable: genuine life experience. Solzhenitsyn doesn't just pen an autobiography with the Gulag Archipelago. He recounts, examines, and criticizes the entire Communist/Socialist/Marxist worldview, and the reality that came from the theory. The last century cannot be properly understood without reading this book. It is my belief that socialism will rise again - not in our lifetimes, but somewhere down the road when intellectuals agree that "Well, mistakes were made, but we're so much more advanced now." The movement will return under another name. This book is the cure.
4-0 out of 5 stars Clarification
This is just to clarify that this is an Abridgement. I wish it had been more clear in the description that this edition was an abridgement and not the entire work. Fortunately, I Amazon refunded my money as I wish to read The Gulag in all its glory.

4-0 out of 5 stars A sobering adjustment of perspective
I'm usually among the first in line to complain about the NSA, COINTELPRO, the modern surveillance-state, the PATRIOT ACT, etc.In spite of this (or, perhaps because of this) it is deeply insightful to read this first-hand account about life in a genuine police-state.Although ponderous and sometimes outright dull, The Gulag Archipelago is an important record of one of the darkest chapters of modern history.Without books like this, who will remember once all the survivors are gone? ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I read this book and it was great!
I found this book very easy to understand and informative. I have attended estate planning seminars and other financial conferences, but came away overwhelmed and confused. Jay has a great personal story that really adds to his credibility. After I finished reading it, I immediately read it again. I know what to do and what not to do. I have changed the way I do business since I read this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book
I have read hundred of books on finances and I would rate this book near the top as to its usefulness. I learned more about asset protection from reading this book than I have learned from the hundreds of hours I have spent with CPAs, attorneys and financial advisors over the years.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pass
Among his estate planning peers, Jay Mitton is one of the least liked and most notorious attorneys because of his heavy marketing of arguably worthless pre-made kits for family limited partnerships. The low quality of these kits, combined with Mitton's less-than-truthful marketing, has generated some scathing comments on the American Bar Association's estate planning bulletin board. The Supreme Court of Florida in fact entered an order prohibiting him from marketing in that state. The guy is a great marketer, to be sure, but his products can be charitably described as substandard and if you buy his book you need to also buy a ton of salt to go with it. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Thanks to TV cop shows, most Americans can probably recite the Miranda warnings, but do they know when the warnings do--and do not--apply? Tort reformers cite the $2.7 million in punitive damages a jury awarded a little old lady in Albuquerque when the cup of coffee she had set between her legs spilled and scalded her. These crusaders against "excessive" damage awards do not usually note that the trial judge reduced the award to $480,000, or that the coffee was 20 degrees hotter than competitors' coffee.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Law 101: Everything You Need to Know About the American Legal System
This is a great introduction to the different fields of law. This uses recent cases that show now only how the legal field works, but how it has run amuck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good so far
Before my first year classes started I had read most of the parts that were applicable. The reading definitely gave me some sort of foundation and framework for understanding all the information they throw at you in law school. Some of the reading is a little dry, but compared to some Marshall opinions you'll read for class, this book's a breeze.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heavily academic in dry, concise, and reasonable format
For what it worth, the book is intended for classroom study. It is dry, dense, and concise with heavy emphasis on the history of law and its role in society. The author has relied on few anecdotes to demonstrate how the law is applicable to dispute resolution. Those linger along many chapters and require the reader to follow closely each anecdote in order to discern the applicability of the law.
