5-0 out of 5 stars A useful and engaging work on contemporary Syria.
This engaging and often witty work asks the basic question, "how do rituals and symbols that are widely understood to be false or absurd help to support a regime?"Her answers help to complicate our understanding of the relationship between state symbolism and legitimacy in authoritarian states.
4-0 out of 5 stars Analysis of Syria's pseudo-cult of personality
When I first traveled to Syria in the late 90's, I found the eerie, creepy phenomenon of what Wedeen terms Syria's state cult to be the most inscrutable, absurd and mind-boggling feature of the entire land-scape.After Asad's death, the succession of his son, Bashar, saw the ubiquity of his father's visage decline noticeably but still it did by no means disappear.5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
One of the best studies I have ever read on the nature of power and domination.Wedeen asks the simple question of how Asad is able to keeppower in Syria when all of the people know that all of the state propagandais false. Her elegant answer gets right to the heart of what makes a rulerpowerful.Asad rules not through totalitarianism, but throughauthoritarianism. What's the difference?A ruler who controls everythingthat the people think (like in North Korea) is not really dominating them, they just don't know any better. But a ruler like Asad rules because thepeople fear him and become unable to dissent as a result of Foucault-iandiscursive practices.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Advice for All
I've been running a video game company that is now over 10 years old. It is refreshing to read a book that distills the important information, approaches the industry with a clear mind, and promotes useful thought even for veterans. Well done!

5-0 out of 5 stars A lifesaver
I manage nearly 50 software engineers at a fortune 500 company. Once I got this book, I realized that our engineer contracts are extremely weak given the volatile nature of many software developers (something I've personally witnessed), and if anything ever went wrong under our existing terms, we'd be in a very litigious situation. Thanks to the information presented here, however, I've been able to outline a strategy for our legal department to consider for a revised draft that could potentially save our company millions of dollars and countless manhours of paperwork in averted lawsuits and other such nightmares. Take it from me-- most engineering managers and entrepreneurs are not as well versed in legal issues as they should be. This book was a huge eye-opener and I recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, somone that knows something about law!
This is a great book for anyone that wants to know the actual details of media related law and intellectual property, but doesn't have the time to get a law degree. I own a small software and web company and we are constantly paying attorneys to review "potential" copyright, patent, and other infringements. I have wasted so much time paying for legal advice, but it seems like these experts never can give me a straight answer. I have been looking for a book that can be understood by a non-attorney, but that has explicit examples of copyright law, trademarks, what is legal, and what is not. After reading this book, I feel 100x more confident now, and I immediately no longer need legal advice in many areas, I KNOW the law in the areas, and can be confident that my decisions are reasonable. I highly recommend this book to any executive or business person that is in the intellectual property loop, but is sick of not understanding what is what. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good reader for certain students

4-0 out of 5 stars Courtroom 302
This book is a candid look at life in Chicago's Cook County Criminal Courthouse. It covers the day-to-day actions of accused criminals, court officers, public defenders, prosecutors and judges from inside the courthouse and lockups.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good read but also depressing.
I found this book to be a good book to read but it also made me realize more than ever how unjust our justice system can be.The author portrays the people involved in the criminal justice system as being so mechanical at their jobs that justice just doesn't seem to enter the picture very often.Sadly the book is probably an accurate account of the Chicago court system, or any other court system in our country, but reading it made me wonder, if all this injustice is so evident to everyone involved, why is it being allowed to continue. These people who have other peoples futures and freedom in their hands seem to just find it easier to follow their routine than to do the right thing and create a criminal justice system that really does protect us and consider everyone innocent until proven guilty. This book definitely reaffirms the sad state that our court systems have become.

5-0 out of 5 stars Courtroom 302 not the television perspective of the courtroom
A must read for anyone remotely connected to or interested in the criminal justice system. It is at once informative and depressing. What makes it so valuable is that you get the back story of each participant (judge, DA, PD and defendent). The reality of a system that treats defendents with disdain and offers justice for a price should open a few eyes. I made it required reading this summer for my students doing internships in the court system. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good coverage
Many people get al excited when they first try to get into the music business only to get shot down by the many intricate twists and turns involving all the legal aspects of running a record label. Mountains of forms and paperwork with no understanding slowly stack up on the producer's desk with no end in site. The situation is a cry for help and that help comes in the form of information, information obtained by reading this very interesting book that details all that is involved with law aspects of this kind.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must-read.
This book is hella boring, but its definitely a necessity for anyone involved in music. It clears up a lot of questions, and a lot of things you might have never even thought about. Reading this book is a must if you want a grasp on legal concepts. I also suggest "101 Music Business Contracts" from Platinum Millenium.

this book isnt all its cracked up to be but has plenty of really good onformation and examples hide inside it. from how to negotiate a contract to many other laws and such this book covers mainly all of it. for a better less boring book that has plenty of examples in it i suggest the book by ty cohen "101 Music Business Contracts" you cant go wrong with that one! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for lawyers and law students
Harvard Law prof Mary Ann Glendon has written a fine book on a theme near and dear to my heart: the joys of the common law and the need to return to it. It's been described as a bit short on solutions, but perhaps those critics don't know that common law generates solutions as it goes.5-0 out of 5 stars A lodestar for a lost profession
Prof. Glendon provides a fresh look at the crisis of faith in the legalcommunity through a survey of the recent history of the bar, the bench andthe academy."A Nation Under Lawyers" urges lawyers, judges andlaw professors alike to examine their consciences and try to appreciate thebeauty of the lawyer's craft and the common law.Though the common lawtradition is not perfect, Prof. Glendon suggests that it is the combinedexperience, understanding and judgment of many generations of jurists. Activist judges, critical legal theorists and disheartened practitionerswould all do well to heed Prof. Glendon's words and find new heart in thenever-ending work of building a stronger common law tradition.Writtenin a manner accessible to attorneys and non-attorneys alike, "A NationUnder Lawyers" provides a solid survey of recent academic and legaldebates for every reader, but is especially helpful -- indeed, essential --to every student contemplating a life in the law. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A job well done
This is an excellent textbook. The language is clear, the ideas well exposed, and the subject covered in a most satisfactory manner. The sixth edition I have read contains an extensive and very useful bibliography. I'drecommend it whoheartedly for undergraduate courses on the topic. Someminor criticisms: first, I would have liked the section on theoreticalperspectives to be more extensive, while the chapter on methods seems to meto be superflous, at least for undergraduates. Second, at the bottom ofpage 232, the information give is confusing. It talks about tons, withoutspecifying whether metric or not. Further, it uses ounces, pounds andkilos, all very unclear. Thirdly, the sections on the socialist system areobsolete, insofar as those systems have practically disappeared. And, yes, although the author claims, at the bottom of p.1 that he has followed aneclectic apporach, "without embracing or advocating a particularposition, ideology, or theoretical stance", the truth is that I feel Idetect a very subtle but, nonetheless recognizable, "leftish" leaning. But those are minor shortcomings, whcih shrink to nothing incomparison with the very positive achievements of the textbook. Kudos! ... Read more
