Very short. Very good.
This book has 44 superb writing tips, but only 26 pages. Is that a problem? No. There are more comprehensive legal-writing guides. There are broader treatments of legal-writing style. And there are surely longer books. But there are none as short and to-the-point as this one. It's clear and easy to read, but most lawyers could spend years implementing its excellent advice. ... Awful book, badly written, obviously unedited
This book is poorly written and unedited. It is riddled with grammatical errors; the captions for the illustrations and samples are misleading; often the text that can't be distinguished from illustrations because of inconsistent use of fonts and dividing rules.Read more

An important legal-drafting text, but a bit dated.
This 1996 edition of The Elements of Drafting is the ninth--the first was published in 1949. At that time it was certainly a leading text. It covers fundamentals of legal drafting, including organization, definitions, words of authority, expressions relating to time, and others. In 1949 it was probably one of the earliest texts to do so in a thoughtful way.Read more

For the Initiated!
I'm in the business of writing poetry, not statutes, but this brief, dense book was a cool read anyway.Right off the bat, Mr. Stark points out that law (like poetry) is not *meant* to be absorbed all at once but actually THOUGHT ABOUT, and that good drafting is not about mere clarity of language, but conveying as carefully and specifically as possible the intent of the lawmaker(s).The Art of the Statute is also interesting in that it reveals a little-known and very specialized corner of the world of writing.This is far from required reading for most writers, but the book shines a nice light on the "how" of making laws -- a skill to which most of us never even give thought one.Mr. Stark's intelligent, coherent writing treats the subject with the seriousness it deserves.Great job. ... Perpetuates the worst aspects of legal writing.
The idea behind this book is good. But the execution is poor. I agree with some of the advice the author gives about the sample documents. But that's where my agreement ends. Two main problems: Great for First-Year Associates
Great for first-year or second-year associates or solo practitioners who need a quick refrence to general civil practice forms that can be used in a wide range of every-day situations.

Excellent rescource/legal writing tool for grads & attorneys
For an attorney starting out, or unfamilar in certain areas of the law, the book help you write clear consice letters that get the job done. For the grammar-phile, not the everyday lawyer.
This book is intensely and heavily focused on sentence-level English; grammar and punctuation receive the most attention. No one can question that, because lawyers are professional writers, we ought to understand English at the sentence level. But this book offers so much detail that it is difficult to get through. Most lawyers can learn to write correctly and effectively without understanding grammar at the level of an English Ph.D.Read more
