Legal writing style
This is one of the best books I've read including other than law. Of course, there are so many good books like "Legal reasoning and legal writing" now on legal writing. Yes, this book is old-fashioned that I feel the old and good America. However, this book tells me the critical points on legal writing such as precision, simplicity, clarity and others. I found this book to be very helpful.It walks through the steps of legal writing one at a time, in easy to read and understand plain English.There are also helpful examples.I had to use Neumann for my Legal Writing class, but ditched him and used this book instead. Still worth reading, 20 years later.
This book was published in 1982, but I liked it, and I think most lawyers could learn a great deal from it. It covers details, like the ten most common punctuation errors in legal writing, as well as more general topics like audience, organization, and style. And it does all of that in a readable and persuasive text.Read more

Priceless tool for 1L's and other law students
During my first year of law school I asked my "legal research and writing" professor for an excellent and clearly written introduction to legal reasoning. He recommended Professor Burton's book. Excellent Introduction to legal theory and reasoning...
in an easy-to-read short book.Burton has given the beginning student of law and layperson a very approachable introduction in plain language.A must for first-year law students or 1L's-to-be to put their learning into a context of legal theory.A good primer before moving onto reading Cardozo's The Nature of the Judicial Process and the Hart's The Concept of Law, both of which I'd recommend to 1L's interested in jurisprudence. What I use to teach advanced lawyers
.Prof. Schiess has written a fine book, one systematically treating the writing problems facing a lawyer. I found the most useful chapter one entitled "Better legal analysis." So far as I have found, his is the only useful treatment of this fundamental lawyer's skill. Also highly useful are his chapters, "Better persuasion," "Better legal drafting," and "Ethical legal writing."

A Must for Legal Writers
This book is a must for legal writers, whether legal secretaries, legal assistants, or lawyers. Many times I have had to draft a motion or some other court document and just needed something to get me started. Voila! There it was in her book. I keep it handy at all times. Also important isher explanation of the different styles of pleadings. I've never seen itexplained anywhere else. This is a godsend when a lawyer asks, "Whichis the correct format?" Since I started using her book and followingplain language principles, I've talked with several judges about it. Theysay plain language pleadings are just as "legal" as the wordyones and when lawyers use plain language, it helps the judges plow throughthe daily mounds of paper they must deal with. These judges tell me that ifmore lawyers would read and follow Carol Ann's book, the judges would bemuch happier to see them in their courts! ... Read more

A Bathroom read...Not bad though
This book is one that has many entertaining stories, as well as some that are just plain insignificant and stupid.The author uses every story he could get his hands on that has some element of humor or interesting facts and puts it in the book.However, while many of the stories are outrageously funny, a majority are just filler. A few laughs; a few chuckles; some filler.
This is a quick read, and some of the funny stories will make you chuckle -- if not laugh -- out loud. But, sadly, there is a lot of unfunny filler--tales of young lawyers whose representation of their trusting clients was poor indeed. Moreover, some of the material--the amusing excerpts from court and deposition transcripts--come from a book published by a court-reporter association ("Disorder in the Court") and have been on the internet rounds for so long that the excerpts have fairly heavy beards.
