A strong introductory textbook.
I have used this book as a text in the legal-writing course I teach. It is one of the most widely used and respected legal-writing texts available. Its strengths are that it is clear, easy-to-read, and practical. It lays out the basics of legal analysis, plus it explains how to write a traditional, objective legal memo and a persuasive legal brief. It always gets to the point quickly, and it covers all the important topics a law student will need in a first-year course on legal writing. A lawyer's biggest errors
Every lawyer knows better than to simply say what they think, give an opinion, or offer unfounded advice. "Don't tell me what you THINK, tell me the LAW!" This book makes that error on a regular basis. You'll get lots of information on how to write and present arguments, but none of it is actually founded on anything. it's a helpful book but the information is repetitive to other materials i already had...

Concise, to the point, and well-organized
I have purchased several books on law school exams, and this one isthe best. It is organized logically and sequentially and is therefore easy to understand and put to practical use. The information it contains is also very clear and is written in plain, easy to understand english.

This book should get you a B
This book offers practical, time-tested advice for performing well on law school exams. I've tutored students on test-taking for years, and this book covers 90% of what it takes to excel on law school exams--clarity of expression, issue spotting, analysis, and organization. But in my experience, those will get you a B or a B+ at best. What you need is that added something, that brilliant insight, that "extra" that gets the professor to say "Wow. A British book that U.S. lawyers can use.
The book is for lawyers in Great Britain and Commonwealth nations like Australia and New Zealand. So the examples may strike U.S. lawyers as odd or old. But the principles are still valid, and the advice is still practical. The book explains how to draft in a clear, modern style. Thorough yet readable, but needs updating.
I teach legal writing, and I recommend this book. It accomplishes more in 140 pages than other books do in 300. It covers the basics of legal style in a readable, informal, and entertaining way. It gives practical advice for completing law school writing assignments--including citation tips. Plus it introduces students to objective legal analysis for memos and persuasive arguments for briefs. It's easy to read and understand.Read more

I finished with more questions than answers.
I am on an endless quest, it seems; to find a book on the administrative state that is informative while being at least mildly enthusiastic about its subject. This book starts out enthusiastic. This book certainly started with enthusiasm. The first chapter, in fact, is devoted to convincing us why the administrative state is a superb American invention (a view I do not always share!) Chapter 5, which is devoted to public participation in the Admin. state also bubbles with giddiness.Read more

Very helpful book
This book was recommended by a professor since the final grade was based upon a final paper. I wish I had this book since 1st year. Great for people who plan to "write on" to law review as well as write any kind of legal scholarly paper. Highly recommend this.

The (Legal) Fog Comes on Little Cat Feet
Joseph Kimble's book is not only for lawyers - it's just that lawyers need it most of all.This collection of his essays is a superb introduction to the art of plain language - legal or otherwise.The book persuasively and entertainingly explains why plain legal language is important and how to achieve it.Professor Kimble is an enthusiastic advocate for plain legal language and it would be difficult to read this book and not be challenged and inspired to improve one's own writing.

Essential for Any Lawyer
Even though this book is 17 years old, it remains in the first rank.More extensive than Steven Stark's, more engaging than Garner's, Goldstein and Lieberman's book is my first choice for any lawyer seeking to become a competent writer.Part III, the longest part of the book is entitled, "Making Your Prose Serviceable," the part one must read.But particularly worthy is the Part following, "Making Your Prose Memorable."Even though few of us will ever attain that goal, it's worth trying.I can't think of another book in the genre suggesting such a lofty purpose.I appreciate having some guidance.

Outstanding
This book is right on the money. I work for a small department and guidance when it comes to report writing is limited. This answered just about all my questions and the hummor definitly helped.

Entertaining but not too helpful.
The book has a lot of text and a lot of humor.It's entertaining to read but I didn't find it very helpful for report writing.When you look at the highlighted portions of the text you have to do extensive reading to find out if you are doing it the right way or the wrong way.It felt more like an episode of the world's worst police reports.The book could have been organized better with major points highlighted. The commonly confused word section was very helpful.

Great Book!The seminar was great also!
I recently read this book in conjunction with the seminar put on by the authors Nicholas Meier and R.J. Adams.The book is a must read for all future police officers as well as a must have for current officers and supervisors.This is the first report writing book that I was actually able to read and enjoy.I was able to pick up several tips that have made my job much easier.You will learn so much from this book you'll wonder how you worked without it.Read more
