Just read it in the library
In my opinion this book is mostly circular advice. It's like coaching a basketball player on foul shooting and telling him little more than "make the shot."
Worth It
Succinct, straightforward, info not available elsewhere (as easily), time-tested advice. Clearly worth having.

Pragmatic, clear, systematic, and without equal
Former clerk to the Supreme Court and Professor at UCLA Eugene Volokh has given a remarkable gift to the legal community that would be a bargain at twice the price. It delivers pragmatic and thoughtful advice in a remarkably clear and lucid style. Moreover, it is not simply clear for law books--frankly, a low bar to pass--Volokh writes for the ordinary public daily on his eponymous blog (where you can read the first chapter of this book), and the skills required for that task manifest themselves in this work.

time-tested excellence
I remember getting an earlier rendition of this book when I was in grade school, and now while in law school, it still comes in handy. If you are in any class or position where you need to write letters, compositions or just about anything else, you need this book. It will tell you when to use what word, when not to use what word, and is easy to use. Can't beat it!

The Redbook is a great have-by-your-side manual for legal or other writing.

Should be on all attorneys' book shelves
As a gramarian and etymologist by avocation, my tastes are a bit weird.Maybe that's why I actually enjoyed reading this bookcasually.Each of Garner's books belongs on the bookshelf of any attorney who considers himself a professional.My pet peeve is the attorney who I know is writing to impress the reader with his writing skills as opposed to the attorney who is writing to persuade the reader.The former will not have Garner's books in his library. ... One of those style books that ranscebds its genre.
I'm a lawyer who is considered a wordsmith by colleagues and judges.This is one of the most important books I've ever encountered.I was exposed to it in my first law school year's writing class, and its lessons have remained with me since.Banish the passive voice! (unless deliberately and thoughfully chosen and used).This is not merely a key to fluidity in writing, but in a sense a moral imperative.Actions are attributable to actors - they don't simply occur.If you're asserting an action took place, you and your reader should know who or what you claim set it in motion.This necessitates intellectual rigor and clarity.Also, I remember and have employed for twenty-five years Wydick's apt metaphor that good legal writing is like fine cabinetmaking: the skill of the craftsman is shown by the crafted joints not requiring glue, just as the quality of a piece of prose is shown by its lack of reliance on "glue words" (read the book).I've used the lessons of Wydick's brief book as a lawyer, writer and writing teacher.I've given it to colleagues, non-lawyers and young relatives.Their writing uniformly improved. ... I am satified with the service

Better than I expected.
I am pleasantly surprised by the readability of this useful book.The book kept my attention, and it was very helpful and informative.

Worthy advice only exceeded by challenging exercises
Bryan Garner brings clarity and insight to the confounding world of legal writing."Legal Writing in Plain English" contains dozens of comments and guidelines that should be burned into the brain of every attorney.Some of these are obvious (e.g., use a readable typeface), while others are more nuanced (e.g., delete perhaps the legal drafter's favorite legalism, "provided that").Each suggestion urges the writer toward a simple yet difficult goal -- be a good writer so that your reader doesn't have to work so darn hard to understand you.

Obviously the book was in great condition, it was new.However, this book doesn't teach you things that you don't already know or that a law school librarian can't tell you.I paid a lot of money for a book I hardly ever touch!

Not helpful.
I found this book to be incredibly unhelpful.The author does not offer good strategies for approaching the exam, and includes essays from a range of jurisdictions, which can be confusing at worst and just unhelpful at best.i thought the Adachi books were much better.

I recently used this book to prepare for New York's bar exam essays.This book gives you a viable succinct format for writing bar exam essays. I took the BarBri workshop and this book was far more useful. It has many practice questions and essays (includes most states).For those of us who do not have the luxury of time to spend in endless workshops, this book allows you to learn the methodology at your own pace, and practice, practice, practice.Definitely worth every penny of the price. ... Never Use it
I had to purchase this manual for my 1st Year Legal Writing class in Fall 2000.That was the last time I ever used it! Everyone I know uses the Blue Book.You'll probably never use the ALWD manual outside of your law school class.

Never Again . . .
I was required to use ALWD's Citation System in law school, in part because one of the professors is a member. However, as I do not work around any of the Courts that use it (e.g. 11th Cir., Montana, the Marshall Islands), then it is absolutely useless.
I didn't know how bad it was 'til I started blue-booking
There are several reasons this book is inferior to the Harvard Blue Book (HBB).
