All the world's a utility function...
I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the foundational question of how we should evaluate legal rules.I should think that the book would be particularly useful for law students struggling to understand what makes their professors tick.The authors put forth perhaps the strongest case for economic analysis of law to date, daring to confront head on the BIG question of whether utilitarianism, or fairness for its own sake, should guide legal analysis.Unlike many economists, who bracket the fairness issue, the authors of Fairness versus Welfare rather daringly explore and defend the normativity of economic analysis. Hopefully, this book will better focus the debate between law and economics and rights theory.However, given the fact that its thesis is mistaken, the work's ultimate "utility" will depend largely on how actively fairness advocates respond! ... An Excellent Resource for the Internet-savvy Public
I found this book to be helpful in conducting Internet searches in general, although it is written primarily for those in the legal profession.It is well-written, concise, and it appears the author went out of her way to put as much valuable information as possible into a small package.

Grace is a loud mouth airhead.
The woman just yells and tells people they are idiots both in this book and on her CNN show, She offers no helpful suggestions, she is just a loud mouth airhead nothing else.

Nancy is both ignorant and opinionated--an appalling combo
Nancy is so blinded by her agenda--attacking defense attorneys and defendants--that she manipulates or ignores facts that are contrary to her extreme views.I have rarely heard anything worthwhile come out of her mouth on CourtTV, and this book is no different.I hope readers (and CourtTV viewers) who are less informed about the judicial system (I am a lawyer) realize not to take anything she says at face value. ... a book for high school graduates
Ok,this book it's nothing special.We all know that every good paid job is related to stress and so is the lawyers life. We all know that we will burn out if we work 12 hours per day, not taking care of our personal life, family, hobbies etc. This book I would recommend to high school students before he/she enters into a real hard working life to be prepared and take into account what they should have in mind in order to keep balance and satisfaction in life. ... I have to agree. Not too practical as a startup guide.
Very dated but interesting from an entertainment perspective. interesting historical anecdotes, but not very useful
This book is written in a "scholarly" "dry wit" style.It is not that easy of a read.It does present a lot of interesting historical anecdotes about the practice of law and famous or interesting lawyers, but besides raising a few questions or topics to consider, it does not really provide a good guide or reference book to start your own practice.Mercifully, it does have a brief summary of the chapter at the end of the chapter. "Hanging Out a Shingle" -- The book was a waste of time.
The title was the best thing about this book.Originally published in 1987 it was republished in 2000...apparently with no effort to update the book.No advice was offered regarding office equipment.No mention was made of electronic research media.I was especially amazed at the 1940s tone of the chapter entitled, "Women and the Law," which speculated about the effect the increase in the number of women lawyers would have on the practice of law.The book contains a number of war stories from the 1800s and 1900s seemingly derived from biographies which add little to the substance of the book. ...
