5-0 out of 5 stars Should You Really Be A Lawyer?
This book is a wonderful resource for students in undergraduate college programs that may start out as law school bound, and realize within those 4-5 years that maybe they want to do something different.

5-0 out of 5 stars An eye opening book!
How I wished a book like this would have been given to me when I was younger. Back then I briefly considered attending law school simply because I didn't know whatelse to do. I was a liberal arts major, with no clue as to what I should do next. Being that I come from a Chinese family, I was also pressured into becoming a lawyer for the money and prestige that the profession was suppossed to bring. Fortunately a good lawyer from the Chinese community came to my rescue and counseled my parents thus effectively changing their minds. Believe me, I was lucky as back then most people did not have such luxury.
4-0 out of 5 stars Who was this book written by?
Its a well rounded book and the information inside it was valid and thought provoking, but you wonder if the theme of the book is to dissuade potential attorneys.

5-0 out of 5 stars The facts speak volumes
I love the kind of comments from someone like Jason in the January 2003 review! And am grateful for the sites he listed so I could check out the lawsuit he spoke of and get the current information! Once again, blessings and beauty come out of negative situations! How powerful that lawsuit is in dispelling the myths; the false perceptions, and misunderstanding of what PPL is all about!1-0 out of 5 stars How true is this story?
Buisness Week:5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic book to inspire you to catch your dreams
This book is a must read for everyone. This is not only the rags to riches story of Mr. Stoneceipher, but the story of those who have joined him in his quest to truly make justice equal to all. This book has been an inspiration to me and my organization. Thank you sir for writing this wonderful book... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars What is happening in the US Justice System?
This is one of a series of books written by different writers aimed at mentoring a range of groups from young conservatives to golfers. The format is to talk about skills which can be of use for those starting out.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book. FYI - BEWARE OF Common Sense Rules by EVANS!
I recommend Letters to a Young Lawyer and consult it frequently. Highly recommended.
5-0 out of 5 stars Packed with Knowledge!
This is an excellent book - well written, cogent and persuasive - the perfect launch of the new Art of Mentoring series. Alan M. Dershowitz, an impassioned and outspoken attorney, is keenly aware of the risks and pitfalls of legal practice. He squarely confronts the fact that lawyers often find themselves having to make moral or ethical choices in ambiguous circumstances in which the lesser of two evils is the only possible choice because there is no clear good - and yet, no clearly lesser evil. The book does not pretend to be objective. It is a compilation of advice, great courtroom war stories, practical tips and philosophical conclusions. Dershowitz is a fighter who chose his side long ago and has no intention of deserting it. Some of his more liberal positions will seem wrong-headed or ill-considered to those who disagree. Well, not ill-considered; he is a thoughtful man who takes lawyering seriously. We recommend this book to you whether or not you intend to study or practice law. It is valuable for an audience far broader than only young lawyers, including those who hire them. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Came up a tad short of its goal...
This book was a good read for a dreary return flight from DC.It falls short of the promise of its title. That said, every opening and closing statement in this book contained a valuable lesson for trial attorneys, and each statement makes a compelling read.I give this book 3 stars because it doesn't quite live up to its title.Perhaps "Some Really Cool Openings and Closings I liked" would've been a more appropriate title for the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb snapshot of 20th century legal cultural literacy
With the rapid growth of sensationalist legal coverage on TV news and primetime courtroom drama a la "The Practice", it can be difficult to understand fully the merits of a good trial lawyer's rhetorical virtuoso aside from the twists, turns, and socio-political backdrop which typically capture Americans' attention. With few exceptions, (e.g. Scopes trial, O.J. Simpson trial) the lawyer, that civic advocate and protector of justice, rarely receives deserved recognition. We sit collectively on the edge of our seats with eyes and ears pealed for damning witness testimonies and blood-stained clothes. Evidence is rarely that clear, Seidemann informs us, and most real life cases turn on the efficacy of the lawyer. This book renews our appreciation for a profession derided so often for its dishonesty that we have forgotten the sad and dangerous implications behind the humor. Within these pages of heartwrenching tragedies and controversies that rocked our nation, you will surely reexperience memories of the incidents as the opening/closing statements verify or challenge what you believe. Seidemann reminds us that we have conferred upon lawyers the great responsibility of juridicial guardianship, in order to shake us out of complacency and reaffirm our right to demand their rectitude and loyalty to their oath.
5-0 out of 5 stars You can't put this book down
In the Interest of Justice is a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars social security disability and the legal professional
Having represented many people in their appeal process for disability benefits for the past 13 years, I have found that understanding the Administration's maze of regulations is full time effort. After a careful review of this book, it is my opinion that it will provide invaluable information for a newcomer to Social Security Representation as well as otherswith more experience. Wolf and Prozcek did a very good job and find myself referring to this book several times each week,to make certain that I did not leave "a stone un-turned'.It is my understanding that Wolfe is an Administrative Law Judge(ALJ) and Mrs. Proszek was a senior staff attorney with the Office of Hearings and Appeals-SSA, which adds to the credibility of this book. They write the decisions. Therefore, they covered in the book exactly what they would expect of a representative to provide for there client during the appeal process and at a hearing. It is a prudent practice to fully develop your case before you step in the hearing room, follow the steps in the book and you will make a better impression on the ALJ andprovide your best effort for your client.I wish that I had a copy of this book 13 years ago! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lowering the Bar: Lawyer Jokes and Legal culture
Very funny lawyer jokes. I am enjoying them.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Mark Twain of lawyer jokes
There are plenty of lawyer-bashing books, but this is not one of them.Rather, like a modern Mark Twain, Marc Galanter uses lawyer jokes to reflect trends in American society.Through thousands of jokes and cartoons that mock lawyers and legalization, he shows on how the legal system is influencing and being influenced by changing relationships between individuals, between citizens and government, and between consumers and corporations.Lawyer jokes are popular because lawyers still fight and win for the little guy. A good read for your favorite lawyer or lawyer-to-be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lawyer jokes for smart people
I thought about starting this review with one of the hundreds of lawyer jokes that are "told" and given life in this excellent book, but I wouldn't want to spoil the punch lines.

5-0 out of 5 stars best law book ever
Some reviewer for a statistics journal called Phil Good's "Applying Statistics in the Courtroom" the best book ever written on statistics and the law.Given the fine books by Finkelstein, by Gastwirth and the deGroot, Feinberg and Kadane book, I think that was a gross overstatement.Phil does however get away from legalese and tries to present key issues.1-0 out of 5 stars Statistics for statisticians

5-0 out of 5 stars Another View of Supreme Court Law Clerks
This is one of two current books discussing the role of Supreme Court law clerks, the other being "Sorcerers' Apprentices" by Ward and Weiden. This book takes a somewhat different approach from the Ward volume, in that it focuses historically on what clerks have done in their positions and how the role of the law clerk has been defined during different periods of the Court's history.Unlike Ward, Professor Peppers does not seek to assess in detail how contemporary clerks function in the cert. pool (which is not even explained until page 191), how clerks serve as communication conduits and coalition builders between chambers, or how they draft bench memos.Rather, his concern is to see how the role itself has changed over time: i.e., when did clerks begin to draft cert. memos, when did they first begin to participate in drafting opinions (in my opinion, an undue amount of attention is paid in both volumes to this issue), how were they selected by the Justices and what criteria were employed? The author has done a heroic job of research, since he covers the entire period of Court history, supplemented by an important range of over 50 interviews with former clerks. His appendices are chock full of useful information. The two books together reinforce and strengthen each other, with the happy result that we have for the first time a really meaningful examination of the important role clerks play at the big court. An exceptionally well-done contribution. ...
