5-0 out of 5 stars Still Relevant After 100 Years
Francis Wellman first published this book in 1903 and despite the passage of over 100 years, the book is nearly as relevant then as it is today.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for lawyers
Putting aside the overt racism contained in this book first published in 1903, this book, which was reading material my wife picked up at the University of Virginal School of Law, gives us an entertaining and eye-opening vista into the Ciceronian art of winning trials at the courts of law.Written primarily by several prominent New York City attorneys, many of its sections, joyfully reveling in the destructive power of masterfully twisted perceptions fed to lay jurors, are egregious far beyond any dispassionate, plain-spoken Machiavellian ethics. In addition to its lessons on the value of perception, The Art of Cross-Examination serves up a menu of time-tested techniques for extracting truth from liars, ridiculing expert witnesses, the use of anger, sympathy, empathy, humor, taciturnity, loquaciousness, etcetera that trial attorneys steeped in Cicero should find quite useful for years yet to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gripping tale of constitutional theory and law
This book is great! Truly, Mr. DeLeo is a master on the subject. I picked this up on a reccomendation from a friend and couldnt put it down! I especially loved the briefing on the "circle-square effect". Never before have I been so titilated by a the law in all its glory. Mr. DeLeo takes what would otherwise be a bland subject and breathes life into it in a manner that is like unto a gripping thriller similar to any good John Grisham novel! Be sure to pick this today! I bought 3 more copies for my friends and we are all now excitedly awaiting the sequel! Congrats on a job well done! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpfull with other sources
I do like this book since it does cover a lot of material for the paralegal which helps with leagal research and writing. The problem is in the writing style of the text, it truly will make you fall asleep. There are alsop a lack of useable diagrams when it come to writing law office memos. The formats however are presented rather well and I would reccomend this text to a paralegal to use as a reference but look into other materials which help aswell such as QUICK STUDY LAW LEGAL WRITING BAR CHART. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Exquisitely Cogent Primer
Mr. Goodman's book is the finest quick primer for a new arbitrator I have ever read. For virtually anyone familiar with any type of legal procedure or mediation, the book lays out the differences specific to Arbitration.Mr. Goodman has arranged the book, so that he presents the answers to the 100 most commonly asked questions about Arbitration.
5-0 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs Up For Judge Goodman's Book for New Arbitrators!
As a new volunteer arbitrator for my local bar association, I found Judge Goodman's book to be indispensable in acquiring the skills and expertise for this new task. His experience in this field are excellent and he uses this experience in a question and answer format which lends itself to an easy, but extremely effective format, for new, as well as experienced, arbitrators. His hints and tips give new arbitrators the guidance and confidence necessary to lead an effective, but expedient, arbitration. This is the number one book for those new to arbitration, or those needing a review of arbitration methods and techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book Fills in the Gaps Left by Arbitrator Trainings
I first purchased and read Judge Goodman's Basic Skills For the New Arbitrator in 1994 when I began arbitrating.Having just finished reading the most recent edition, I am struck by the continuing usefulness of the detailed and practical advice contained in this book. While I have participated in arbitrator trainings over the years, they usually do not cover the nitty gritty "how to" issues this work addresses. These issues are easy to find as the Table of Contents is organized into sections devoted to each stage of an arbitration with an enumeration, under each heading, of all the questions addressed.Judge Goodman's style is clear and concise which makes the book a quick and easy read.It seems directed primarily at non-lawyers, but many lawyers, such as myself, will find in it their money's worth of advice.Personally, as much of my practice is devoted to mediation, I find reviewing the book helpful when I need to switch hats and assume a judicial (as opposed to a mediator's) demeanor. His advice in this regard, touching on body language, facial expression, and utterances, is invaluable in cultivating the proper persona of the neutral arbitrator.I highly recommend this thoughful, easy-to-read book to anyone who is starting to engage in arbitration and for those for whom it is not a weekly endeavor. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars short book, quick read
This book was okay.It did not live up to my expectations however. The "tips" were general and not things you don't already know. It's not worth the money, but maybe check it out from the library. Some information was usefeul.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Survival Guide for Paralegals
I am looking for my first job in the paralegal field, and thought this book would be more helpful so far as providing insight into the various areas within the field. However, there are only two chapters that cover specific specialties in the field, one on litigation and the other describes the corporate culture. The rest of the book deals with very general topics, such as how to get along with people in the office, how to be organized, how to deal with stress.Give me a break! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lawyers Poker
This is a rare book about an esoteric subject which the author has made clearly understandable for a wide audience of readers. Every one who faces the misfortune to become involved in the legal process should make this their first read. It helps one understand the games lawyers play with the fates and lives of their clients, opponents, judges and juries. Those not so unfortunate will appreciate the transfer of densely packed knowledge in an extremely lively and memorable package. Thosewho don't understand the allure of poker will gain appreciation for the game as a model for life situations.

3-0 out of 5 stars At least it teaches something about poker
This is an unusual packaging of standard lawyer "wisdom" that lawyers with more than a couple of years' experience will long since have read elsewhere. But it is interesting for what it tells neophyte poker players about how experienced players think.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun for Poker Lovers and Lawyers
I finished Lawyer's Poker just the other night. As a middling-bad poker player with an enjoyment of the game and a fan of Jim McManus' book, Fifth Street, I really found the stories amusing, interesting and educational.Keep up the good work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tort Law for Legal Assistants
Tort Law for Legal Assistants is a must for any civil litigation paralegal. I selected it based upon its table of contents, and it delivers. It is a clear, concise overview of tort law that provides reasoning, theories, relationships, elements, effects, limitations, applications, andmuch more. 5-0 out of 5 stars A great IP text book
I got the first edition of this book because it was the required text for a course I took in UC Berkeley a number of years ago.I have been practicing IP law for about 10 years and I still use it as a quick reference (I also obtained the 2nd Edition). In my opinion this is a very well done book and an useful tool for someone who wants to have the overall picture of a complex issue.

4-0 out of 5 stars Primer, No Less
A waste of paper is rather harsh. Yes, this book is not for the paralegal, but I found that it was a great primer for those that may be interested in some of the operation of law -- exactly who I am. I have no real desire to be a paralegal or more, nor do I want to study law in school, but this book is great in that I am presented with basic information in readable form, with no background in law. I give this four stars because it seems to advertise highly technical information, when it really isn't.

1-0 out of 5 stars 200+ pages of useless copyright info.
A useless text for the real world.Patent paralegals are in demand and this book does not help prepare them.Copyright prosecution for paralegals is limited to finding the proper form that the client can fill-in themselves. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A student's take
I bought this book to kick start my research for my senior independent study on jury consultants and their effects on the justice system.I was not dissapointed. The bibliography alone is worth the price of admission. The author cites authorities on persuasion, jury psychology, group dynamics, cognition, rhetoric, among numerous other topics.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great survey of the literature
A very nice survey of the scientific literature and studies out there. Its strong point is its bibliography. Very readable.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK, but new lawyers need to be effective advocates
Walton's book is OK, but if you want to become an excellent advocate, you should read Keith Evan's Common Sense Rules of Advocacy for Lawyers."This is a great book for new associates and 3Ls.3-0 out of 5 stars Um...yeah
This book is well written and has a lot of do's and don'ts of the practical legal world. The author speaks a lot about what to do on the job and frequently gives a few good ideas. A huge percentage of those ideas are supported by real-life anecdotes from various legal professionals. The major problem I had with it, is that throughout almost the entire book I kept finding myself saying, "Yeah, duh." As just one of many many potential examples, there is an anecodote about a summer clerk who goes into a firm, whines that he needs his own office and is allowed to use the office of a lawyer who is out sick. The lawyer wants to connect to her computer from home, so the summer clerk is told he absolutely cannot touch the computer. The clerk does so anyway thus preventing the lawyer from being able to connect to the computer and gaining for the clerk the contempt of everyone in the office. There are a lot of little stories like this where somebody does something just blatantly stupid (and a smaller number where somebody does something blatantly correct). Some of the stories are amusing but are almost always connected to advice that seems really obvious. If you think you have really poor judgement then by all means read this book.3-0 out of 5 stars Decent book, but mostly common sense.
This book was very informative as far as a typical 9-5 workday of a lawyer, but most of her strategies are common sense. Seriously, anyone who doesn't know business manners shoudln't be a lawyer anyway. Its common sense to dress appropriately, to never crack raunchy jokes to a partner, or to speak of how hot another attorney's wife is. If you have any common sense, spend your money on a more practical book with better advice or educational value. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Resource
As a [...] consumer, I have yet to buy a book from these publishers that wasn't worth the asking price. These books are that useful! As a practicing paralegal in the Golden State, I consider myself fairly industry savvy but still found information contained within that I didn't find elsewhere.I'm not comfortable with [...] having the monopoly on subjects of this nature because any time there is only 1 provider of any given thing, that provider tends to gouge consumers. That will changeas competition develops. In the interrim, however, this book is a good resource.Highly recommended.
