4-0 out of 5 stars Quite Comprehensive
This text offers great details, but I did not rate it as 5 stars because (1) when searching for content, it is difficult to see the key words in the text and (2) the case studies are well selected, but since they are inserted throughout the chapter, it is challenging to determine where the case ends and the author's content begins.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good enough
The book was damaged but it looks like its the post office job because the envelope used to cover the book was damaged as well. Besides that, the transaction was good

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful text and reference
I use this book as the textbook in an Intro to Law for Paralegals class that I teach. The books is incredibly well-organized and useful. There are very few typos, and additionally it contains great references at the end of each chapter. While I think the book is designed for the classroom setting, it can also be used for self-teaching as well. Even after the class is over students can use the book as a reference guide.

For the benefit of all the people who cannot take her course, Prof. Connie Bagley has written this book that has the same title as her course (sheteaches a quarter each at the Stanford and Harvard Business Schools). It isan extremely very well thought out and well written book. This book is amongst others used at the Stanford MBA course as an introduction to legal issues that may arise for managers in a variety of business situations. It is comprehensive and is well illustrated withlandmark case studies and relevant hypotheticals. Constance Bagley takesout most of the cumbersome legalistic language and makes the complexitiesof US corporate and civil law understandable. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars west's paralegal
The book is very informative and easy to read although the authors describe old laws/rules in great detail, only to find out that the law has changed and everything that you read is void.Of course they describe the revisions but I found the old information a waste of my time and also annoying.

3-0 out of 5 stars good but a little overrated - should be 3 and 1/2 stars
Okay, at one time (in earlier editions) this was a great book, but it has become outdated. It is still good, but it is not the best.I gave it 4 stars, but I would really have given it a 3.5 if that had been an option.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but a little dated and choppy
I bought this book before starting up my new law practice because it's one of really only two good books on opening a law office, and this one seemed to have the most praise.
5-0 out of 5 stars It was all that I expected it to be.
The book arrived on time, infact a day earlier than I anticipated. It was in excellent shape, cover crisp and shiny and didn't seem like it had been used at all. Surprisingly, it was delivered right outside my apartment door. I have purchased other books through amazon before, but none were personally delivered to me.Out of all the purchases through amazon, this exceeds all in quality for my money and efficiency in delivery. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I'd hoped
This book did not teach me nearly as much as I'd hoped. It gives a very superficial outline of a lot of topics, but somehow when I finished, I didn't feel like I'd learned anything.

5-0 out of 5 stars a MUST for future law students
I have purchased a number of law-related books from Amazon, but this book is by far the standout of the bunch. It systematically covers all of the major topics covered in the courses offered at every law school in the US comprehensively, even explaining the case briefing process. This new edition incorporates actual case law, allowing you to sample the work done at law school before actual signing your loan check and taking the plunge. Dunham clearly explains all of the basic terminology and principles underlying the first year of law school, providing the law student-to-be a firm foundation and a peace of mind before starting classes. I recommend this book without reservation to ANYONE interested in law school or interested in bulking up on their knowledge of the substance and form of law in the United States.

5-0 out of 5 stars First Interesting Textbook I Ever Read
I ordered this book as a requirement for an introductory paralegal course and was at first a little aprehensive about the books thickness.I started out knowing absolutely nothing about the law, the government, or the internal workings of the legal system. This book teaches the beginnings of modern law and the influences of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government. The basics of many common areas of law are also covered such as contracts, probate, property, torts, criminal law, family law, and many more. This book teaches a great amount of useful information in an easy to read and easy to understand format.Plenty of possible real life scenarios are used as examples as well as real cases to help you dive deeper into the subject you are trying to grasp. This is the first school textbook I've ever actually enjoyed reading from.Key terms are boldened for easier reference and studying. For anyone interested in learning about a variety of beginning law topics, it is definately an investment worth making. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Law school made easier
If you are a law student taking Legal Writing or an associate (summer or new) in a firm, this book will teach or refresh all the skills you need to write an effective memo or brief. The authors teach clear writing andprovide actual student wrting samples to elucidate their techniques.Thebook is especially helpful for those who are wholly unfamiliar with legalwriting, and the index and layout make it a user-friendly reference tool. 1-0 out of 5 stars liberal blather from a hippie lawyer
Mr. Feige has written a book with some amusing stories but the overall liberal bias renders it more a polemic. Every story is distorted by omission of facts and his unrelenting bitterness. For example Mr. Feige writes how cars with tinted windows are given 5 tickets, one for each window. He doesn't say that tinted cars are the prefered hit vehicles for drive by shootings and drug deals. If the police can get a tinted vehicle off the streets by amplifying the violation by 5, more power to them. He also writes about dog violations as though the police were using them to harass helpless pet owners. He doesn't say that these are not the cute poodles you might find on 72nd St. These are vicious 150 lb pit bulls that are used to terrorise neighbors and clear a path on the sidewalk. Finally, there are the ad hominem attacks naming specific jurists without any attempt to provide a balanced view. At one point, Mr. Feige names a judge and states, "He got the job by handing $38,000 in cash to a politician". Where are the facts to back up this accusation? More than anything else, the emptyness and bitterness of Mr. Feige's life shines through. He never mentions a wife, children, or any outside of work activities other than drinking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blow-by-blow account of one hectic day is eye-opening and revealing.
INDEFENSIBLE: ONE LAWYER'S JOURNEY INTO THE INFERNO OF AMERICAN JUSTICE provides a description of an ordinary day in the life of a South Bronx public defender: a day which encounters murders, annoying fellow lawyers, and vindictive judges. Feige has been a public defender for nearly fifteen years: his blow-by-blow account of one hectic day is eye-opening and revealing.
5-0 out of 5 stars A glimpse into an impossible system
Mr. Feige's journey into the day in the life of a Public Defender in the Bronx is funny and infuriating.Little gets done (aside from injury). His world is one where the compassionate are blocked from those in need by a pretty brutal, heartless, and racist beurocracy clothed in a robe.He fights a lot.Sometimes he wins.Mostly, it is a study of a system in need.Mr. Feige does a great job of showing a system in great need of repair.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every law student (or would be law student) should read this book
As a law school career counselor, I can attest that one of the top challenges students face is determining what they want to do with their law degree and how to get what they want. This book goes a long way in helping to solve that riddle. I recommend it to every law student with whom I work. Each one who has followed my advice has praised the recomendation. My Admissions Office will not give me my personal copy back because they find it so useful.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very useful book for yourself or to counsel others
I work in the career services field and have found this book very helpful in counselling law students. Most law students come into law school with a vague notion of what they want to do, but no sense of what it really means to practice a particular kind of law. Ms. Abrams book gives them a real-world account of what lawyers in each specialty do all day and what they can expect out of their careers. I'd highly recommend this to anyone considering a legal career or anyone helping those who are.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to appear knowledgeable during on-campus interviews:
For anyone who needs an edge over competition during recruiting season, here is your ticket.Abrams' books is well-organized, comprehensive and illuminating. If you read it, you will learn the most basic lingo of the various legal practice areas. You will also be able to identify the specialities that suit your personality (for instance litigation and corporate are very different). You'll enter the interview process more self-aware and be aware of what's out there; as a result you'll be able to effectively market yourself to particular firms. If you don't read the Official Guide and don't know anything about the different practices of law yet, how do you know you are not making a mistake pursuing the practice of law?Read it, then apply for those jobs. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars time-tested excellence
I remember getting an earlier rendition of this book when I was in grade school, and now while in law school, it still comes in handy. If you are in any class or position where you need to write letters, compositions or just about anything else, you need this book. It will tell you when to use what word, when not to use what word, and is easy to use. Can't beat it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be on all attorneys' book shelves
As a gramarian and etymologist by avocation, my tastes are a bit weird.Maybe that's why I actually enjoyed reading this bookcasually. Each of Garner's books belongs on the bookshelf of any attorney who considers himself a professional. My pet peeve is the attorney who I know is writing to impress the reader with his writing skills as opposed to the attorney who is writing to persuade the reader. The former will not have Garner's books in his library. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Great If Your Interested in Working at a Traditional Firm...
I found that this book focused mainly on traditional law firms across the country rather than non-traditional aspects of the practice of law. If your willing to pick up and move across the country for a specific firm then this is the book for you. If your looking for something less traditional, keep looking...

2-0 out of 5 stars Beware . . . .
I actually worked at one of the places she suggests (a government agency), and it was the worst place I have ever worked. It had a very high turnover rate, especially for a non-firm employer.I got the impression that the recruiter was a friend of Kimm's.Employers can simply schmooze the author into putting them into her book--this how many attorneys get on those "Best attorneys under 40" type lists.

1-0 out of 5 stars The view from the West
I agree with the reviewer from Il that this is not a helpful book, and that it was written in such a way that it would become outdated quickly.Culling information from "administrators" is all fine and good, but the book would greatly benefit from having been authored by a lawyer who had been in the trenches in more ways than as a mere summer associate--Ms. Walton's experience with practicing law.I am thinking, for example, of D. Aron's classic book on alternatives to practicing law, a book which benefits greatly from the author's experience of having practiced law. Such a perspective would allow one to more carefully explore firm politics and how a new associate might deal with them, for example.I also agree with the other reviewer's underscoring the impact of regionalism. In California, for example, we routinely hire prospects from California law schools that are not highly ranked. This is because we know that such schools turn out fine lawyers by having come against them or worked beside them. (I'd like to think it is not because we feel inferior to applicants from better ranked schools elsewhere, a problem the other reviewer hinted at as far as his experience in the South.) ... Read more
