A Good Start
As another reviewer has pointed out, the author is determined to debunk many of the Douglas myths. Yet this needs to be done.The 'polio' and 'WW1' veteran myths created by Douglas himself are as unsightly as they are unseemly, as was much of his personal life and relationship with others.This is not being overly negative however.This is telling the truth, and the author's sources and documentation on these scores is very good.Bill Douglas, as a person, was unquestionably an SOB to be around unless you were at least his peer.The author does present an admiring portrait of Douglas' jurisprudence, especially from the Rosenberg case forward, but this could/should have been done in much more detail.The book itself is well-written from a technical point of view, reads fast, and is (unlike too many recent publications) well-edited.I do believe, however, that this is a stepping stone book and that the definitive biography of this finest U.S. Justice has yet to be written--one with more scholarly emphasis on his jurisprudence.It will probably be a multi-volume work.
Incomplete portrait of a fascinating man
This book will probably stand as the definitive examination of William O. Douglas as a person.Having undertaken over a decade of research, Murphy has produced an exhaustive (though not exhausting) account of Douglas' personal life, from his boyhood in eastern Washington through his early years as a lawyer, law school professor, and New Deal administrator, to his years on the Court.While the basic details have been known for nearly a quarter century, thanks to James Simon's earlier biography of the justice, Murphy provides many new details gleaned from his research in the Douglas papers (which were closed when Simon wrote his book) and his extensive interviews with people who knew the justice offer several illustrative anecdotes.The result is an important corrective to the idealized image Douglas constructed of himself in his many autobiographical accounts, recounting his womanizing, his politicking, and his terrible treatment of his staff with considerable thoroughness.Murphy's descriptions of Douglas's failed campaigns to become the Democratic nominee for president are particularly fascinating, and alone justify the price of the book.

I was tricked into thinking this was the new book that covered the new code!If it isn't the 2005 edition with the blue cover.....then don't put the #$@#$#$ 2005 edition cover on display!!!!!!!!!
DON'T BUY - OLD EDITION
2005 Amendments are not in the burgundy colored BNK law book - they are in the new one. The cover is blue. The burgundy colored one in OLD law. Buy the new blue one (2005) that has the new amendments in it.

Adequate but lacking
I purchased this book for an undergraduate psych course, "Psychology & the Law". As I have a BA in psychology, I've read quite a few psychology textbooks in the past few years, and this might possibly be the worst of the bunch. Good for students, but lacking in some vital areas
I bought this book for a course entitled Psychology and the Law, which I am taking as an elective course, and not as part of my areas of concentration. Although I am a Sociology and Women's Studies major, you don't need to be a feminist (or even a sociologist for that matter), to see where this book is lacking vital information on the criminal justice system, and on rehabilitation techniques used in North America.Read more

excellent -- a must for the casebook
best thing to read before class to brush up on cases or in time crunches!

I LOVED this book, funny and easy to understand!
PLUS it includes background info on the case that neither the Lexis nor the West briefs (let alone your casebook!) will give you.Funny details, cool pics to remember the case by (c'mon, you start talking Supreme Court 20-page decisions--easy to drift off and forget what the heck the point of the decision was!)...GREAT help in my Civ Pro class.

History of Constitutional Law and some interesting notes about judges.
This book starts off in a dull way: the history of constitutional law and the judges who helped shape it.Later on Judge O'Connor talks about her perspective of the people she worked with, which makes it well-worth reading.I plan to read her other book: her life growing up on a Texas ranch.

Interesting and enjoyable
Indeed that there are very few books like this one for which you feel that every minute you spend reading is well spent.
Key Insights into the Supreme Court
Justice O'Connor provides an inside view of Supreme Court basics, background on the key origins of our laws, perspectives on other justices (especially those she has known personally who are no longer with us), and some recommendations. It is not intended to be a scholarly work - simply to provide a layman's overview.

An Accessible Treasure
In "Minds on Trial," the authors, Charles Patrick Eqing and Joseph McCann select 20 cases from roughly the past 50 years in which there is a fascinating intersection between law and psychology. The work initially looks like a book the casual reader may have some difficulty getting through. Such is not the case as each of the 20 cases are broken down into manageable chapters and are written in such a way so as to engage even the casual reader.

Small Size, Huge Impact
I, too, was startled at the small black and white book that I had received for my $83.I had expected a glossy book full of wonderful illustrations.
Big price, little book...plenty of value
Originally hesitant about ordering this book, mainly due to sticker shock, I went ahead after previewing the table of contents.None of the other books I had searched on courtroom graphics seemed to cover the aspects I find to be most challenging- organizing the information, budgeting and estimating a realistic time-frame.Read more

Gerry's the man
Well, this is not much of a review.I guess it's more of a show of support.My name is Gerald Robin and I think this book is cool.Ah ha just kidding.My name is Ralph Wiggam*.My dad is a police chief so I have always had an interest in the criminal justice system.I actually haven't read the book or any of his others but I bet they're good.However, I have had Dr. Robin as a professor for two classes last semester.So, I attended his lectures every morning.Brutal right.Anyway, I got to see first hand someone can be so passionate about their work.His very bizzare sense of humor enlightened the class and really made us think...is this guy o.k.?AAaha!No, well maybe sometimes, but he presented the subject on many levels.His higly educated vocabulary made me raising my hand a funny situation.He's so smart that you feel awesome getting a right answer because you want to prove yourselfto this guy.I hardly ever got a right answer.So he would very politely shoot me down and the whole time he's talking just keep thinking...wow I'm retarded.Eh, at least I tried right?Even though I was tired a lot I was still interested every day and thats 5 and a half hours a week.So, I guess that's what one could expect reading one of his books.So, TA DA!!!Now, that's one hell of a review!Read more
