4-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a book for Byron White Fans
Byron White intentionally did not leave much of a paper trail, as a man distrustful of the press, which is why this book has nowhere near the depth of Jeffries' Powell biography. White may well be most vilified and castigated justice in his own time, a fact which Hutchinson recounts in great detail, because he frequently ruled against the interests of the intelligensia-- frivolous First Amendment rights claimed by the media, and, of course, homosexuals, in Bowers, which won him the most profane attacks of all, from gay rights activists imbued with more passion than respect for the deliberative function of the Courts.
4-0 out of 5 stars A New Deal liberal from the Rocky Mountain front range.
Byron White began his long judicial career in dissent, resisting the rising tide of criminal procedure liberalism of the Warren Court, and ended it as the balance wheel of Rehnquist Court. In his 31 years on the Supreme Court, from 1962 to 1993, he was in the majority in 807 five-to-four decisions, more than any other justice in history, except for the wily William Brennan who served on the court for 34 years.White also has the signal distinction of being the only Democratic appointee to the Supreme Court since the end of World War II who profoundly disappointed his erstwhile partisan allies.Beyond the fact that White refused to "grow" his jurisprudence from its New Deal origins to accommodate the latest cultural avant-garde enthusiasms of the juridical left, little is known about White and his jurisprudence is widely misunderstood. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Colorful Portrait Of A Man Named White
Hutchinson has written a fascinating contemporary biography of Justice White who is almost unique in his continued insistence on his privacy and personal dignity. Although the author eschews speculation as to White'sfamily or personal life, one still gets a good sense of the man--hisintelligence, tenacity, and just plain decency. At least as interesting arethe times he lived in, and few lawyers or judges have shared the action andpassion of their times more fully than Justice White--first on thegridiron, then in the classroom, in the world of affairs, and on the court.White had his shortcomings as a communicator and legal theorist, asHutchinsonaptly illustrates with the oral and written record. But wouldthat our society had more such self-effacing, dedicated and excellentlawyers and public servants! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A student's take
I bought this book to kick start my research for my senior independent study on jury consultants and their effects on the justice system.I was not dissapointed. The bibliography alone is worth the price of admission. The author cites authorities on persuasion, jury psychology, group dynamics, cognition, rhetoric, among numerous other topics.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great survey of the literature
A very nice survey of the scientific literature and studies out there. Its strong point is its bibliography. Very readable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful.Thought-provoking.Masterful.
I had heard a lot about this book before reading it.Now, after reading it, I see that this is not just another trial advocacy book.It will challenge you to think about courtroom persuasion in new ways.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For trial lawyers
I just finished this book. As a trial lawyer, I have used various trial presentation methods for years. I am always looking for new ideas, however. This book, perhaps because it is written by a trial lawyer, had excellent examples that were very helpful to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gives you an edge over the others
Rogers' book is an easy-to-understand, intuitive and state of the art guide to trial lawyers for getting an edge on the opposition. For some of us, "technology" is a four letter word. Rogers de-mystifies it, and shows how simple it is to use it to persuade ... and to win.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Technical Guide
Use of technology in the courtroom is a fast evolving area of trial practice with which most lawyers are not familiar. This book is a practical, easy to use guide which emphasizes the utility of programs such as Powerpoint and Sanction II in a real courtroom setting. It uses typical case fact patterns to provide context for the learning experience. The layout is graphic-intensive, clear and simple to follow.

1-0 out of 5 stars the worst casebook in all lawschool
I never encountered a less useful book during all my three long years at law school. Do youself a favor and buy a companion guide- nutshell or something.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wishful thinking from Insurance Company Defense
Particularly when compared to the classic Prosser & Keaton, it is pretty clear that this text is geared toward tort "reform."There are long excerpts from law review articles written by the authors (how modest.) Conservative points of view are offered without "alternatives."The history of torts in the common law is rather distorted, particularly regarding strict liability which these authors present like it is a surprising new invention. The Products Restatement is overemphasized. And too many cases that come out aberrantly for the defense are included. If nothing else deters you from registering for the class that uses this book, consider how you would feel about a book called "Tax Law and Alternatives"or "Contract Law and Alternatives."This is law school folks. The alternatives are Med School and B-School.As long as you're in law school please try to find out what the law is.What somebody thinks it should be is all well and good, but it is not helpful to present "alternatives" as thought they are the current state of tort law.

4-0 out of 5 stars 1st Year Tort Law
You will most likely not buy this book for fun but because your 1st yearlaw professor tells you to.Most parts of the book are very dry and ittakes a long time to read it properly. The cases are good, standard Tortcases. The most helpfulexplanations can be found in the Notes andQuestions. While the book is dry bordering on boring, the Notes andQuestions at the end of each chapter will give you a much betterunderstanding of the information.Franklin and Rabin deal with physicalinjuries, non-physical harm, causation, trespass and liability.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A good examination of two great justices
Here, James Simon presents a concise (260 pages) treatment of the relationship between Hugo Black and Felix Frankfurter. These two justices were the greatest of their age, they defined the debate over constitutional law and most scholars were lined up behind one or the other justice. Both were placed on the Court by FDR in the late 1930s and they dealt with the change from the older property/federalism focus of the Court to the individual rights era. Simon begins with brief biographical sketches of each justice and than he examines a variety of cases over their 25 years of service together to show their different approaches to civil liberties. 5-0 out of 5 stars THANKS NOLO for putting this book out!JUST what I needed!
I LOVE this book!Very thorough, endless hints and tips.I am no longer afraid or to bring my own case and feel informed and competent. This book tells you with frank honesty what to expect, where you may encounter trouble and helps you handle almost any situation.I recommend it to EVERYONE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Legal Information You Can Bank On!
In my capacity of monitoring the information desk for Chicago's main library, the Harold Washington Library, I come in contact with numerous people who are embroiled in legal battles and who need some accurate guidance in plain English. This book, "Represent Yourself In Court," is one of the books I recommend the most for those who have minor legal issues and can't afford (or choose not) to hire an attorney. It walks you through a whole range of legal proceedings from start to finish. It also presents questions for you to ponder before you decide to initiate legal action. It's written for civil litigation, not criminal. It also gives information about settling a matter, and gives pointers on how to decide if yu need professional help.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Good, but necessarily limited, intro to the legal system
Overall, I'd give this a positive rating, but since it's written for all 50 states, it is so broad in its coverage that it makes it difficult to learn about how to pursue your lawsuit in your particular state.Read more

Great book and the practice exams are a MUST HAVE. If you get the opportunity, you should take one of his seminars--this guy's a trip.
5-0 out of 5 stars BEST for studying to pass NYS notary exam!
The FOUR practice exams are awesome! They are styled just like the state exams and even have answers and explanations for every question. The 160 practice questions helped me pass the state exam with flying colors.Piombino writes in easy-to-understand, plain English. The book illustrations are helpful to better understand the concepts, too.I learned so much more than I thought I ever would.Even my friend (a New York notary) liked it.She found the latest, New York law changes in the book especially helpful for her job.ANYONE preparing for the New York State exam needs THIS book!Recommended highly!

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful information
The book has very practical information on the functions of a notary. There's also detail on the legal background. There's a lot that I never realized about what notaries can/can't do, nor did I know the details behind the proper procedures a notary should follow. Good stuff. ... Read more
