5-0 out of 5 stars Useful and reliable
The "book description" above belongs to a different book: this hornbook is not part of the "Black Letter Series," its author is not Professor Clermont, and it doesn't come with a handy computer disk.5-0 out of 5 stars Arizona State Law Student
This is the most helpful study aid available for Civil Procedure!Thetext is very easy to understand and it is orgainized to follow theprogression of the law school course. The authors do an excellent job ofexplaining the development of personal jurisdiction and subject matterjurisdiction to the present day.It also does a fine job of explaining thefederal rules (and includes an index of each FRCP and where it is cited).

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent source for information to supplement a casebook
This is another in the long line of hornbooks from West publishing. It is an excellent source to supplement and even embellish the law of Civil Procedure contained in whichever casebook you are using.Since most CivilProcedure courses are a year long, I would strongly recommend investing inthis hornbook, it is very handy to have when outlining and preparing forfinals. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars More of a Test Prep
This book, and in fact, this entire series serves as a very useful tool for any law student--it is an excellent test prep. 5-0 out of 5 stars easy and nice to read
I am a Korean, studying American Law but living in Seoul, Korea. I happened to read this book. This book was so helpful for me, since it has a capsule summary which saved me a lot of time. There are many mini-caseswhich explained theories as well as exceptions.

1-0 out of 5 stars Just wrong.
I only read the patent section, and have no knowledge of the other sections. However I have found the book to be entirely too superficial to be of any assistance.Additionally, at more than one occasion on topics that are fairly important, the information was just wrong.I have read the patent section of my IP supplements to prepare for the exam, and I by far recommend the IP hornbook. It's a little longer but WAY worth it over this book.If your library doesn't have a copy and it's too expensive for you, then try Examples and Explanations, but whatever you do, don't just rely on this book, you'll look like an idiot when you completely misstate some things.I mean 90 to 95% of it is right, I'm sure, but I'm going to get enough wrong on my own, I don't need help.

3-0 out of 5 stars A little superficial, but okay.
Like almost all hornbooks or outlines, this one glosses over Trademark law.Copyright, Patents, and Trademarks are all taught seperately, so I don't understand why they are lumped together and glossed over superficially by almost all hornbooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars The third edition is up to date--It is super!!!
I don't know whether or why the 2d edition would be on sale, as the first reviewer implies in his or her nevertheless good review. The third edition has been out for two years and it is complete, accessible, understandable, and better than the competition--by far! If you want to understand patents, copyrights, trademarks, this book will make you an expert in an afternoon. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation!
This book is a wonderful, comprehensive collection of essays covering a wide variety of topics integral to an understanding of the "art" of negotiation. As a litigator, I find myself spending a large amount of time in negotiations.I picked up this volume because it came highly recommended by a friend of mine who has been involved in the field of negotiations for several years now, and I can only echo my friend's recommendation. The book is organized into topical chapters, all of which can be read independently from one another and are written in a manner that makes the information, research and theories easily accessible even for relative newcomers to the field of negotiations. Most importantly, this book is geared towards giving readers not only the tools to become better negotiators, but also to explain why and how these tools are successful - information that I believe is critical to one's ability to effectively implement negotiating techniques based on the specific situations and people one encounters.Of particular interest to me were those chapters that deal with the more psychological aspects of negotiations, such as importance of gender, emotions, identity and culture; topics that are key to an understanding of interpersonal relationships and all too often are either ignored or only superficially touched upon.I highly recommend this book to everybody interested in educating themselves about the topic of negotiations - and becoming a better negotiator along the way.

5-0 out of 5 stars At last!
At last the best thinkers, researchers and writers on dispute resolution have been brought together in one volume to summarise the most important research findings of the past 30 years, share their practical advice, and discuss where the field might go next.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for "Practitioners"
I negotiate commercial transactions and related disputes for a living.I've been told (and I know) that my style can be abrasive and that the victories I get are at times only short-term in nature.Having heard this enough, I decided to try to educate myself on the topic. So I picked up this book because it looked the most authoritative and considered - I don't really go for those hokey "secrets to success" books; I think its important to understand a subject and draw your own conclusions, not be told what to do.Well, its fair to say this book had everything - interesting and relevant history on the topic, practical prescriptive advice, topical discussions about the roles of emotion, identity, agents, and analytics in negotiation and dispute resolution.I thought the introduction by the editors was a great guide, and I got a lot out of the chapters by Shapiro, Bazerman, Moffitt, Stone/Heen, and Peppet.I'm not sure if I've yet converted its teachings to "success," but I'm certainly better for it, and better informed. This is a great reference for anyone who encounters disputes for living, and that's pretty much everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Issues just as important today as they were then.
Take one overwhelmingly male-centered and predominantly white society, add huge portions of power, racism, sexism, a misinformed public and gross displays of injustice, and you've got a recipe for the American way. This collection of essays written at the time of the Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas hearings holds every bit of relevance now as it did nine years ago. Highlighting earlier civil rights legal battles and connecting their influence to the hearings themselves, each essayist examines in progressive detail just how pervasive--indeed, how dangerously latent--racism and sexism are in our society. How the volatile and often avoided issue of race can blind the equally volative and often dismissed issue of sexism in any race.In these essays, we are given a shockingly clear image of the circus that was the mishandling of the hearings.Explosive, revealling, and thought-provoking, this book yanks the proverbial rose-colored glasses from our collective American conscience and dares us to think for ourselves. ... Editorial Review

A former prosecutor and moderate Republican governor of California when appointed to the Supreme Court in 1953, Earl Warren (1891-1974) surprised everyone by leading it in an increasingly liberal direction. Brown v. Board of Education, Miranda v. Arizona, and other key decisions bolstered the rights of individuals and committed the federal government to acting in support of them. Journalist/historian Ed Cray's detailed account depicts an admirable, self-assured man who arrived slowly at positions, driven not by ideology but by an old-fashioned sense of morality that asked, "Is it fair?" ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
Earl Warren was Chief Justice for 16 years, from 1953-69.he presided over Brown v. Board of Education, the most important case in US history.this book brilliantly portrays the Chief Justice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Man, Great Book
Earl Warren grew up in Bakersfield, California. To those of you who've been there, it seems an unlikely place to beget one of the great justices of the 20th century who was known for his ability to continue to mold and change his ideas. However, this comprehensive and excellent biography of Earl Warren, Governor of California and 14th Chief Justice of the United States, shows that he turned out far from where he might have been expected to wind up.
4-0 out of 5 stars The best biography of the most controversial chief justice
For those who have even heard of Earl Warren he is solely identified as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Ed Cray's wonderful biography clearly shows that he was much more than simply a judge, he was a seminal political figure during the mid-20th century. Cray presents Warren's rise to political stardom in clear and lively terms. Warren represented the progressive wing of the Republican party and was so popular as Govenor of California that he defeated FDR's son after the war and was even the nominee of both parties in one of his elections. Beyond his service in California, Cray also demonstrates just how close Warren came to the oval office when he ran as VP with Thomas Dewey, who would likely have won the election had he followed Warren's advice. 5-0 out of 5 stars Lawyers Poker
This is a rare book about an esoteric subject which the author has made clearly understandable for a wide audience of readers. Every one who faces the misfortune to become involved in the legal process should make this their first read. It helps one understand the games lawyers play with the fates and lives of their clients, opponents, judges and juries. Those not so unfortunate will appreciate the transfer of densely packed knowledge in an extremely lively and memorable package. Thosewho don't understand the allure of poker will gain appreciation for the game as a model for life situations.

3-0 out of 5 stars At least it teaches something about poker
This is an unusual packaging of standard lawyer "wisdom" that lawyers with more than a couple of years' experience will long since have read elsewhere. But it is interesting for what it tells neophyte poker players about how experienced players think.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun for Poker Lovers and Lawyers
I finished Lawyer's Poker just the other night. As a middling-bad poker player with an enjoyment of the game and a fan of Jim McManus' book, Fifth Street, I really found the stories amusing, interesting and educational.Keep up the good work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Non Factual
The First Trial is a very good book. The only fault is it does not belong in the Nut Shell Series. There are no case examples. It makes you think of how it would be if you didn't think of that before trial and is full of merit towards thinking outside the lawyer. You just never know if it works or not. It's self centered on the first trial of the lay person, Where Do I Sit? It would make a better audio book/ non-fiction, not a Law ref.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for law students- who should also see Keith Evans' book
Goldberg's nutshell is good, but Keith Evans' book, Common Sense Rules of Advocacy for Lawyers, is for the law student and new attorney who wants to learn how to be an excellent advocate.Read more

AND I FEEL IT IS ALL WANT YOU WANT OUT OF LIFE. WITH PRAY, ANDWITH GOOD PEOPLE BEHINDYOU WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENT. AND IT GOES TO SHOW AND THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT JUDGE MATHIS DIDWITH GODS HELP. BECAUSE HE HAD TO HAVE GOD IN HIS LIFE IN OTHER TO GET AS FAR AS HE GOTTEN. I LOVE THE MAN, HE MAKES MY DAY. AND MAY GOD CON'T TO BLESS HIM AND HIS FAMILY. AND FROM WHAT I HAVE READ SO FAR I LOVE THE BOOK. HE IS A ROLL MODEL I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO MEET HIM . ONE DAY4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiration for People from All Walks of Life
The courage Greg Mathis exhibited in turning his life around is phenomenal! This book not only serves as inspiration for inner-city young people but anyone who has taken a wrong turn in life. This wrong turn could be criminal in nature or it could be a mistake in choosing a mate or career.Whatever the mistake or wrong turn, Greg Mathis' life proves you can "turn it around."I know Greg on a personal basis and met him through my friendship with his aunt Eva and her son, Walter.I can truly say Greg is a compassionate and down to earth man who freely shares his blessings with family and friends.

4-0 out of 5 stars Miracles Do Happen In The Innercity
I was originally drawn to this book about Greg Mathis because while in an airport traveling from Chicago back to LA, I happened to catch his tv show.I was impressed by his style in the courtroom so when I heard that he had written a book about his story, I thought let me pick it up.I had no idea about his background so at first I was physically afraid of this young Greg Mathis in which his book went on to described.I continued to read because I kept thinking when is the miracle going to happen.I was not sure that he would ever become anything more than what he was at the time, a thug and a criminal. Finally, more than half way through the book, the miracle happened and I found myself rooting for the young man, Greg Mathis. In short, his story touched my heart in a different way.Although I'm an african american women and grew up in Chicago during the 1960s and 1970s.The life that Judge Mathis described in his book was foreign to me.But I was so impressed with his determination, preseverance, hard work and his ability to never give up.While I don't have a lot of street smarts I found myself thinking perhaps I had been more judgmental in my past about the young boys who grew up in the project because I totally saw the change in Judge Mathis in this book.I'm glad that I read it and have been sharing with others that it is definitely a must read for all ages. The bottom line is anybody can be anything they want to be if they work at it and become discipline.Kudos to Judge Mathis and other african american males who have decided to allow the miracle to happen in their lives. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Ok, but not as convincing as others.
Having already read Dan T. Carter's masterful Scottsboro: A Tragedy of the American South, I already knew the story of the Scottsboro boys and the miscarriage of justice that happened to them. I hoped to get more insight with this book. Unfortunately, its unclear style got in the way. I would guess that someone who was unaware of this case might love this book--but if you are looking for more than narrative, get Carter's book instead.

One of the more controversial events of the 1930's took place near Paint Rock, Alabama when nine Negro youths were arrested for the rape of two white women on a freight train. The nine were quickly tried and found guilty. Before the death penalty could be administered, appeals were filed with the aid of the US Communist Party.Thence ensued a lengthy series of trials and appeals that lasted from 1931 until well into the forties. It was a legal battle between White and Black as well as North and South with the battlefield always under the control of the White Southerners.Today it is an incident lergely forgotten by succeeding generations.Yet it is an excellent example of the the state of race relations in the South (not that there are too many surprises there), the role of moderate judges in reconciling racial injustice, the influence of the Communist/Socialist Parties in the 1930's as well as a number of other splinter stories.Therein lies the excellence of this book.5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book!!
I started reading this book with very little knowledge about the Scottsboro incident. This book does an amazing job of portraying the different sides to this tragic story. The chapters are short enough for those of us with short attention spans. However, each chapter grips you with why those particular people feel and think the way they do.Read more
