A very useful book - whether you go to law school or not
I was seriously considering applying to the law school last summer, and this book was one of those that I purchased to read along with LSAT prep books. The book had specific cases lined up in order from easy ones to more complicated, and it hasquestions of the end of each chapter, so that you can test yourself and your udnerstanding of material and how it applies in the courtroom. Also, I liked the sense of humor of the author; it was very encoureging in the beginning, and then kept peeking throught the book.
Buy this if you want to waste your time
All of the E&E books I have read, especially this one, are disappointing. I guess they can be helpful if you haven't been attending class and need to learn the material for the first time. But I'm not sure why a student who has kept up in class would waste time with such a vague and introductory study guide. I recommend a more advanced, detailed and concise study guide. Also, the Q&As at the end of the chapters are too verbose for what they cover. Most of the answers are pages long, when they should be at most a few paragraphs, if not a few sentences.

If you are struggling in Civil Procedure, buy this book.
Personally, I found Civil Procedure was the most difficult class in my first year of law school.I purchases several secondary sources but none were as helpful as Glannon's book.Glannon's book teaches by taking its reader through series of exercises that start with the basics then build into complex problems.Each problem comes with well written, complete, and comprehendible answers.The book uses helpful diagrams for explaining confusing topics such as the sometimes-confusing relationship between subject matter jurisdiction, person jurisdiction, and venue. ... Perfect for Commuters
The two hour plus commute I endure every day to get to school has forced me to get ultra-creative in my study methods. Sum and Substance CDs in general have been a godsend. The Civil Procedure set in particular is easy to understand, meticulous,entertaining enough to keep one's interest, and follows right along with the classic two semester first year civil procedure class. Now instead of fuming silently over wasted time, I can anchor my knowledge while I ride.

A must have for any First Year Civil Procedure Student
Don't make the mistake I made and wait until second semester to buy these Arthur Miller cds.Spend the money up front and between these cds (and the Glannon books) you will be set and you'll find it was well worth it right from the get go.The cds got me through all the tough topics and made Civ Pro one of my favorite subjects. Miller trudges through all the big items in an easy, sensible way with very clear hypos, and a sense of humor that totally grows on you.His teachings stood out in my mind so many times during my final and honestly think I would have been in a terrible position without these cds.

Simply the Best!
Prof. Miller is widely acknowledged not only as tops in the field, but as an extremely effective teacher of the subject. Prof. Miller has perfected his teaching of this course over many years, and these recordings provide a condensed version of the course he has taught at Harvard Law School for many years.

This is the one that got me through Torts in law school.
This is THE classic hornbook for torts, and is an indispensable part of any law student's library.I still find myself referring to this one from time to time.When I was in law school the lucid and clear explanations of law, combined with copious footnoted citations, made this book a joy to own and read.
Good resource ... needs an update
I used this book in law school, and continue to use it 7 years into my practice.However the pocket part is the same one I've always had -- 1988 -- I cannot find an update.

P&K is a classic
I used P&K to supplement my casebook and class notes, and it guided me to an A- in torts.It's a great tool and a great read.However, it does have certain limitations: the final edition was published in the late 80s, so it does not provide much guidance on product liability, infliction of emotional distress and other emerging areas of tort law.Read more

Very good comprehensive text
This book was mandatory for a forensic case law course taught by a seasoned forensic expert.It is thorough, accurate, and provides everything one needs to know before conducting forensic evaluations, as well as a significant amount of information most professionals ought to know but often don't.I recommend it as a tremendous resource for any clincian, especially those who have even a mild interest in forensic or correctional psychology.

Not a light Sunday afternoon read, this book requires time to think and digest topics.It provides outstanding survey and advanced analysis of research, U.S. laws, and policies across the major foci.While a bit dated, it probably is the best source for gaining an understanding of forensic mental health.An outstanding reference.I feel somewhat odd in reviewing this book, almost like, I'd imagine someone feels when reviewing the Bible.Well worth the price.I wish it would have an annual or biannual update.

Buy it
This is a fantastic hard cover book which relates much of the information needed when working in the related field. Tjompson/Delmar Learning publishers are among the highest in their field. If you are looking for a source on Civil litigation then you most certainly have found it.

This book is very poorly written.There are many typographical errors throughout the book and many, many inaccuracies in the content.Some terms are used incorrectly and instead of assisting the reader in learning civil litigation, it creates confustion and frustration.
Great source of info
For all those up and comming law studients, this is a great information source. Step by step, the steps of the litigation process are illustrated. In addition, it is written in such a way that even a person with no legal background (like myself) can understand it. I highly recomend this book. ... Read more

McElhaney's Magic
Classic McElhaney -- wisdom and wit together.The best at giving smart, efficient and practical advise.i already had McElhany's Litigation -- which i review before every trial.i have recommended him to my best friends who do trials.This is more of the same.

McElhaney's Trial Notebook
McElhaney's book contains all of the guidance one needs in order to prepare for trial.From practical guidance for organizing materials to inspirational passages on the formation of the theory of the case and argument, this book has it all.I prefer it to the Mauet book.

A "must have" for any up and coming young lawyer
This book was suggested to my Advanced Trial and Evidence class in lawschool.I decided to pick up a copy to see if it would really be worthwhile for my future practice since I want to litigate.It is excellent from what I have read so far.Many of us were shown or told how to do or say certain things in pretrial and trial litigation class.This book is not only a good reminder, but it has many other practical and entertaining ideas that I'm sure to use in my future practice.A "must have!" ... Synchronicity???
Is this book, a worthwhile read, an attempt to close the book on shady goings-on in Woburn of the 1960s?Were some children in this case treated for leukemia using cutting edge techniques of the day,such as bone marrow transplants, and some of those children survived only to be tormented because of their unexpected survival?
Just a an ending, not a beginning!
This is a necessary book which does a public service by highlighting the repercussions of poor environmental stewardship. It does not, however, indicate the extent of a broader mystery behind the events in Woburn and Middlesex county itself, respectively.
An inside track on the legal process

Outstanding resource for the forensic architectural engineer
Robert Day does a fine job of addressing the many modes of foundation failure in a clear and articulate manner.Of special help to the engineer are the numerous case studies presented, and the step-by-step procedures to follow after a failure has occurred - from preliminary investigation and documentation to litigation and expert witness testimony.

Seminal work from late scholar
One of the most cited Constitutional law scholars in legal history, John Hart Ely's book was published in 1980. The book, which earned the Order of the Coif award as the best book about law published from 1980 to 1982, focused on the role of the U.S. Supreme Court in interpreting the Constitution. He wrote that the judiciary's role was to assure democracy with an open and fair political process - without focusing solely on the original intent of the drafters of the Constitution, or inferring moral rights and values from the document's wording. Stanford Law School Dean Kathleen M. Sullivan said of the important book: "'Democracy and Distrust' is a masterpiece that combines elegant theory, raffish wit and a heartfelt search to ger the role of the Supreme Court in American democracy just right." The book angers many conservatives, who tend to believe that judges should avoid such interpretations of the Constitution, however this book, and his many other articles on Constitution law, are necessary reading for any well-read lawyer.

Juridprudence: Is there a middle ground?
This excellent little book tries to find a middle ground between the judicial activism advocated by Ronald Dworkin, for example, and the strict original intent approach eloquently defended by Robert Bork. Philosophy of jurisprudence is not always a concept easily grasped, however. In the first chapter, Ely takes us through the discussion of where and how judges drive their activist approach through the door. Ely agrees that the due process clause of the constitution is not the place where an activist jurist should hang his hat. The due process clause, he argues, is concerned strictly with procedural matters, though it can be forcefully enforced within that context. Likewise, he argues, the 14th amendment, with its equality clause and privileges and immunities clause, also has been used to broadly expand judicial oversight on a number of issues. Again, Ely dissents by arguing that the 9th amendment is the more appropriate vehicle because of the procedure issue that constrains the due process clause as well in the 14th amendment. A true classic
John Ely's masterpiece on the the proper scope of judicial review is a must-read for anyone interested in the Supreme Court or just law in general.In short, Ely feels the Court should limit its power to assuringadequate access to the political process for all and not to giving answersto substantive issues such as abortion, affirmative action, economicrights, etc.In short, the book is a strong defense of the activism of theWarren Court (Ely clerked forChief Justice Earl Warren and the book isdedicated to his memory).Though the emphasis on the work of the WarrenCourt may make the book seem a little outdated, the book is neverthelessrelevant since it provides a partial justification for the abandonment ofsubstantive due process that conservatives such as Antonin Scalia andRobert Bork have argued for in the 80's and 90's while at the same timedefending certain types of judicial activism (for example, in voting rightsor gay rights cases) that appeal to liberals.Though Ely's insights intoconstitutional law are brilliant (his corpus of law review articles fromthe 70's, many of which form the foundation for this book, provides some ofthe most well-thought arguments on many diverse areas of constitutionalscholarship), his arguments are not without their weakpoints (though youmay have to read the book a few times to find them- not a bad idea in anycase).Specifically, the manner in which he derives his so-called"representation reinforcement" theory is problematic.It seemsto be somewhat of a non sequiter to argue, as he does, that since one ofthe main themes of constitutional development has been the extension ofaccess to the political process (in the form of the extension of thefranchise, abolition of the federal poll tax, etc), the Court's should usesuch a development as a cue for how to read the Constitution.It not onlyseems to cheapen the amendment process, but also begs the question of whymore democracy is desirable.In addition, Ely's theory of equal protectiondepends upon a good deal of psychology (trying to read the feelings thatmotivated legislators and their constituents) that sometimes leaves youscratching your head.While the arguments of the book are not perfect, itwould be a mistake to think that any of them are severe enough to detractfrom the sum total of the wisdom contained in this unparalleled piece oflegal scholarship. ...
