Thoughts from Down the Road...
OK, it has been a while now since this book came out, and sinde i read it cover to cover. (in the interests of fulkl disclosure, i am in the book. But if you begin this book, you to will be compelled to keep reading!Honest!) A flawed but very valuable work.
Steven Keeva (who is not a lawyer but has spent many years observing and writing about them) here provides an assortment of advice, tips, and real-life examples to help you become a better lawyer and a better person.While I found much of the book to be old news, every 10 pages or so Keeva says something eye-opening, memorable, and truly instructive.The chapters on listening and service were, for me, the real pay-off, and I know I will be going back to them frequently.By contrast, his portrayal of litigators, trials, and especially corporate practice struck me as simplistic and a bit stereotyped.In addition, those who are unreceptive to the touchy-feely approach to problem-solving should be warned that this book is nothing if not touchy-feely.That said -- and notwithstanding my other qualifications -- this book is an *important* contribution to the literature of professionalism and lawyers' "mental hygiene" (as Prof. Stone of Harvard has called it).Since this book is also a quick read, every lawyer and law student who even suspects it may be helpful should give it a try and then keep it close at hand.

Staying in the practice, and enjoying it!

Very disappointing
I had a hard time getting through this book.It is mostly boring and repetitive.The comments and anecdotes by Dennnis Smith are often arrogant and self-serving.I am a retired firefighter from Los Angeles County FD and very much enjoy reading about firefighter experiences and talking with firefighters from other areas and other countries.I have great admiration for volunteers who give to their community with personal sacrifice and often great risk.I am greatly bothered by firefighters, especially professionals, who toot their own horn and think of themselves as great heroes.This book is just not very interesting at best, and at worst is somewhat offensive.

All About Firefighters
Do you like the thrill of going into a burning building? The book "Firefighters: Their Lives in Their Own Words", is written by Dennis Smith. Firefighting is not an easy thing to do. This book tells you what they do and how they live. Just Could Not Get Into This Book
I'm not saying this book is bad, but I just could not get into this book.I thought I'd really enjoy it, but it's all one and two page anecdotes.A lot of them are very repetitive of the other ones.I think if they stuck to only a dozen or so in depth, it would have been more interesting and enjoyable, at least for me that is.But this is just my opinion, the other reviewers all seemed to enjoy it.If you think this book may appeal to you, go ahead and try it.Don't go by my opinion, after all it is only my humble opinion. ... Torturer
This guy is/was a torturer. Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib shouldn't be a surprise if an army employs people like McDonald. If you're accused of torture and human rights abuses, "deny everything, admit nothing - and make counter-accusations." Sounds like Rummy and the Pentagon brass read this book! Not a good read
I agree with the other reviewers.This book is vague and was not worth my time.I couldn't wait to get to the last page just so that I would know, without a doubt, that there was nothing in this book of value.

Make 'em Talk
This book casts more light on Patrick McDonald's personality disorders than it does the the subject of interrogation. In the course of my 22 year career in law enforcement and corrections, I have never seen an instance where Patrick McDonald's loosely formed ideas would be relevant to an interrogation practitioner. Mr. McDonald comes off in this book more like a person who would more likely find himself in the position of being interrogated by a policeman rather than conducting an interrogation! From an academic point of view, Make'em Talk is not to be taken seriously. This is nothing but a venue for McDonald to validate his improverished ego and self-image by making himself out to be much more than he is. I deal with this same genera of pathological behavior in my work in counseling youth offenders. ... Read more

Qualified to Publish on Ethics?
I was a student of Professor Wolfram's at Cornell in the early 90's, and while I found him to be a good teacher, and also found his command of the material to be formidable, I must say the irony of the man's personal conduct was never lost on the Law School community.
