5-0 out of 5 stars The 'MUST Read' for law enforcement intelligence students
Jonathan R. White's Defending the Homeland: Domestic Intelligence, Law Enforcement, and Security is the book I assign as the keystone text for a Law Enforcement Intelligence course. It is a `must read' because it correctly portrays intelligence as both art and science, deeply rooted in action-making tangible things happen, getting real things done-by reducing warfare to its simplest level and thereby limiting the negative effects of susceptibilities such as fog, chance, and friction. This volume makes sense of how the traditionally polar fields of law enforcement and intelligence can develop a symbiotic relationship for synergistic effect.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for every teacher.
This book covers school law in a clear and concise manner. The language is easily understood and should be on the desk of every teacher who is concerned about the welfare of children.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a very good book about school law.
I like this book very much because as the book says, it summarizes school law in a nutshell.I have found it very helpful to refer to while taking a school law class. It is any easy read compared to my school law text, and hits the main points of court decisions. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A classic text badly in need of editing.
First & second editions of this text have long been considered standards in the land surveying profession, but I was disappointed with this (the 3rd) edition. The material is all there, but badly in need of a careful editor.Errors in punctuation and typography were frequent enough to be a real distraction.I found myself pencilling corrections in the margins as I read! For instance, long quotations, not set with a change of fonts, or even quotation marks, made for difficult interpretation.I had the distinct impression that certain chapters were revised in a hurry, and that perhaps each author thought the other was checking the work. In at least one chapter, it appeared that two different authors took a stab at addressing a single subject and both were included in the book although in DRAFT form! The authors also need to update discussions of measurement methodologies to include electronic total stations, data collectors and GPS.Though I'm not a real big adv! ocate of gender-neutral writing, the next edition should totally expunge the term "title men", which must appear 15 times.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a dilemma......!

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute must read on terrorism
This is the best terrorism book on the market. It covers the basics from beginning to end.I would recommend it to anyone interested in the subject.Simply outstanding!

1-0 out of 5 stars Author lacks credibility.
This authorlacks credibility as he cites the Gun Owners of America ... as a terrorist group - right next to Hamas (page 285, in the appendix)...such an allegation, without more to back it up borderlines on defamation. This test is used by Blue Ridge Community College (Weyers Cave, Virginia) in a counter-terrorism course. The instructor advised me that he's giving up the text in future classes because of this one erroneous allegation in the book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Current law student
I was not very impressed with this book. This is even more true as I continue my legal education. The advice for those thinking of going to law school seemed like common sense. Some of the 1L information was good but a lot does not really apply unless you are going to a school similar to those the 'mentors' attended.Other items that they say will help you get ahead just seem like shortcuts that will probably burn you in the long run.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beacon in the darkness
Law School Confidential is a must read for anyone considering law school. It's very helpful when you get there, too. The book is a beacon in the darkness of the first days of class. I consult it on a regular basis.

1-0 out of 5 stars I shot this book then burned what was left
I was forced to read this book for the written portion of my Sergeant promotional exam.I have a BA in Criminal Justice and a BA in Psychology. This is the worst textbook I have ever read. The authors have so little information to impart, that they quote themselves from other chapters! After sifting through the c_ _ p in this book, I now have a clear understanding of what community policing actually is:People are too stupid to fix their own problems and are unable to rely on their elected leaders, so the police must pick up the slack. In this book, you could just as easily substitute Mail Woman, Garbage Man, or Cable TV Repairman for Police Man.As you read, you find out that you have been a terrible police officer.Further, the only way to fix yourself is to read this book and internalize its junk.Simply put, community policing is a way for your department to get federal funding.Next time someone asks you to fix a social problem, tell them that their elected local representative, home owner's association, town council, or governer is responsible for those concerns, not the police.Though, you will be glad to lock up their neighbor for kicking his dog. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Contracts in a Nutshell
Thank you so much for a nutshell version of contracts! It's all beginning to make sense now!I believe this book was key in helping me to pass this, not so much fun, class!

4-0 out of 5 stars This Book Saved My Life!!!
Some time around mid-semester, I was hopelessly lost and confused in my contracts last. In my despair, I bought this book. It opened up my eyes and lifted the fog of contracts for me. My final grade in the class was much better than I hoped for and I have to partly thank this book for that. The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars is that it is useful for bare bones knowledge of contracts, and shouldn't be used to replace attending class and taking good notes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read!
This book is as simple as it gets. Contract law is one of the more complex subjects in law school. Any material that adds complexity to an already challenging subject has little value especially to 1L's and even bar candidates. Understanding the basics of the subject is crucial. That is why this book stands out from the rest. I have read the casebook, a hornbook in this jurisdiction as well as various textbooks in a foreign jurisdiction. "Contracts in a Nutshell" gives the simplest explanation of the law by far. It is a must read indeed! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Warning! Portions out of Date
I am generally quite a fan of the Examples and Explanations series and this is generally true of PR. The book provides a good overview of the various topics, including a integration of appropriate concepts from the Federal Rules, common law, the Model Rules and the Model Code. In terms of overall concept-based teaching, the book does a fine job.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Prep for the MPRE!
I took the MPRE in NY (where the minimum passing score is 85) without having taken a course in Professional Responsibility either through law school or one of the bar-prep companies. I read this book once, took a practice examination available at the MPRE website, and scored 108. As with most of the Aspen E&E series books, this is a great introduction to an area of the law that you have to know. It is easy to ready, and works well for MPRE preparation.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very good, but the only thing out there
This book, like most of the other nutshells I've read, is not particularly helpful. The organization is confusing, and not enough attention is devoted to major topics, as the format is primarily just a recitation of cases. A study guide is supposed to provide a concise synopsis of the law, not merely throw a bunch of conflicting cases at the reader. Steven Emanuel has the market for law school study aides cornered, with the Examples & Explanations series a distant second. Unfortunately, this is the only major study guide that exists for employment law. Thanks to Rothstein's worthless and maddening casebook, learning employment law is neither interesting nor fun. This nutshell will provide some relief, but not much.

Editorial Review

If you take it step by step, the United States legal system is not nearly as intimidating as it is reputed to be. With a little expert guidance from a couple of attorneys (Stephen Elias and Susan Levinkind), you can learn what's in a law library and how to use it, how to seek and understand statutes, regulations, and cases, how to explore online resources, practice your legal skills in the library, and even write a reputable legal memorandum. It's not as easy nor as immediately gratifying as buying an ice-cream cone, but with a modicum of patience, dedication and average smarts, you can research and understand the law without years of legal training and without emptying your bank account onto some lawyer's shiny desk.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Legal Research: How To Find & Understand The Law
Awesome!Very thorough and easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars The very best!
I am a legal assistant and I use this book constantly! It gives you great strategies to work more efficiently while getting better results. I had no idea how many legal resources there are online! This book tells you which sites are the most reliable and easy to use. It also demystifies annotated legal codes, case digests, state reports and many other research tools. But most importantly it is extremeley well organized and easy to use. I wish that I had discovered this book when I was a student!

5-0 out of 5 stars A simple, direct, straightforward, "user friendly" guide
Now in its tenth edition, Legal Research: How To Find & Understand The Law by attorneys Stephen Elias and Susan Levinkind is a simple, direct, straightforward, "user friendly" guide to the extremely complicated and tricky topic of doing legal research. Individual chapters address how to properly frame questions in legal categories and efficiently look up relevant laws and case history. Legal Research is emphatically not a substitute for a consultation with an attorney; however, a close reading followed by judicious use of its fact-finding methods is a superbly effective way for non-specialist general readers to prepare themselves before sitting down with a billed-by-the-hour consultation with a licensed attorney or paralegal researcher! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book seems to get 5 or 1 star(s)
I completely enjoyed the book, and found it to be accurate. It is very interesting to note that a number of the reviewers were not so much reviewing the book, but expressing their opinions, hence, the disparity in the ratings. While reading the book, it made me understand what Professors in college were actually practicing, revisionism, and disparaging founders reputations. It is too bad that in this life, the founders do not get to defend themselves against the neverending attacks on their character. Prior to reading the book, any engaged political person knows that the Judicial branch is destroying America with their partisan activism. Eventually, changes will happen to our system, or it will be broken. Barton does a good job exposing these justices that are looking to mark their own mark at our expense.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Truth
If you doubt what Christians in government are up against, take a look at these reviews. Barton has done a masterful job with this book, but it simply doesn't fit the modern "separation of church and state" agenda of liberalism. As a result pointy head pseudo-intellectuals go on and on about how Barton made all of this up...Well, the truth is the modern rewrite of history is what is making things up. Read this book and learn the truth about our founding fathers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Revisionist History
Barton could not be more wrong on the issue of church and state separation. Not only does he misrepresent the founding fathers and their beliefs, but he completely misses the mark in terms of religious freedom. As an American who cares deeply about religious freedom - not only for myself but for those who believe differentlythan I do - I feel that it's my duty to set the record straight.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Casebook
In comparison to the other casebooks I've been forced to read this year as a 1L, this casebook is probably the best written.Instead of just placing emphasis on the cases and the rules to glean from them, it also highlights key principles and strategies to use as a lawyer in the future(termed lawyering by the authors).I must admit that taking Nathan Crystal's contract class obviously helps in the understanding of the book, but it's a good regardless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Seller
