1-0 out of 5 stars Thank God!
I can only thank the good Lord that we have Sanford Levinson to correct the fools who thought that they had a workable document that only got us through a bit under 250 years.Too bad he wasn't around back then--I'm sure that the Founding Fathers would have sat up and taken notice of his clearly superior genius.

Editorial Review

Developing good legal reasoning habits is essential to a quality law practice. Judge Aldisert examines legal thinking from a variety of perspectives to help guide lawyers through appropriate reasoning patterns. One Amazon.com reviewer says the book "provides a shortcut to understanding the basics of legal reasoning, including the common law doctrine of precedent, identifying weaknesses in legal arguments, and fashioning winning arguments through syllogisms." 4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but taking a logic course would help
I'm a former legal researcher at a law firm and incoming 1L student at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. This book was on my reading list and I must say, it is an outstanding book on the logical process attorneys use on a daily basis. The book is clear and concise, offering in-depth commentary on certain logic terms, that even the average layman can understand somewhat. The book also contains a great source of humorous passages, that help ease the strain of learning a process, that can be somewhat mundane at times. However, once you have a full grasp on the concepts explained in the book, every argument from thereon, becomes a collection of categorical syllogisms that you can dissect and understand.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
If you are preparing for law school or attending law school, then you need to read this book. This book will improve your understanding/analysis of common law and improve your ability to construct legal arguments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helps to burn off the fog that law profs relish creating
I can't say it any better than in Aldisert's own words in his chapter on the Socratic Method: "An understanding of the principles of deduction and induction will significantly assist the student in the daily exercise [i.e. the Socratic Method used by law professors in the classroom]. To lack this understanding is to be substantially, if not totally, disadvantaged." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars real political analysis
Unlike the political commentators of the late 20th and early 21st century (watchers of Sunday public affairs programs and AM radio listeners know who they are), the commentators of the 18th century actually had something of substance to say. This was a time when education was rare, but when done was done well. The New American Library does its usual exceptional job in assembling the material in this book including some of the more important selections from the Federalist Papers as well as some of the writings of the anti-Federalists.Here the role of the government and the nature of freedom are really explored.Life was better before politics became about feeling and emotion.Every American should read this book, but only if he wants to really understand the basis of the American experiment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Provides a complete environment for the Federalist Papers
Study of the Federalist Papers, of course included in this two volume series, is a conduit for understanding the American ethic. When the Federalist Papers are viewed as included in this chronological deliberation between the Federalists and Antifederalists, they become even more profound than the enormous depth they can achieve when read alone. The concerns of Brutus and Agrippa are answered, the repititive call for a 'Bill of Rights' revealed. Madison wrote to Jefferson in 1825 defining the Federalist Papers as'may fairly enough be regarded as the most authentic exposition of the text of the federal constituion, as understood by the Body which prepared & the authority which accepted it.' The enormous insight gained from tracking the arguments and concerns of the proposed Constituion , and the responses of the Federalist cannot be easily estimated, yet the result is a much more informed conscience of the American experience.Madison in the same letter mentioned above stated that Federalist Essays did not foresee all the misconstructions which to that date had occured, nor prevent some it did foresee. For the concerned and deliberate citizen of today many of these issues remain, issues such as Federalism are current topics and all too often the opinions of the few become the conscience of the many, examining these volume will do much to alleviate this vexing condition. More alarming is the realization that many of the fears of the Antifederalists have become a reality in todays polity. An excellent and comprehensive collection thank you Bernard Bailyn.

5-0 out of 5 stars Always Relevant . . . and Still a Lively Read at That!
Editor Bernard Bailyn has assembled a first-rate collection of letters, circulars, pamphlets, speeches, and what would be the colonial equivalent of modern op-ed pieces that allows today's readers to witness the foundingof a government through the eyes of (and with the voices of) those who werereally there. But don't be fooled into thinking this is going to be thestilted, polite prose that often belongs to 18th century philosophers ordebaters. Many of the pieces Bailyn has selected are remakrkably spry andteeming with understated wit.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An important work that clearly and succintly makes the case.
Bringing the credibility of her many years of public service, most notably her work as a Congresswoman during the Watergate Committee and as a prosecutor, Elizabeth Holtzman, with Cynthia Cooper, has produced an important work that is, at the same time, both lawyerly and accessible. They provide the reader with the background - both historical and legal - of the important role of impeachment in the maintenance of our democratic system and then proceed to seamlessly lay out the evidence that overwhelmingly supports their conclusion. While I may not have been the hardest person to sell on their conclusion, the argument is so well-drawn that it is hard to imagine that anyone approaching the book with an open-mind wouldn't come away thinking that impeachment is a necessity or, at least, an option that needs to be explored more in the public discourse.
5-0 out of 5 stars Every American Should Read this Book
Holtzman and Cooper have created a brilliantly organized, succinct, and vivid analysis of President George W. Bush's high crimes and misdemeanors.Their book is engrossing and enraging; it makes abundantly clear why it is crucial that Congress take steps to impeach this president, for the very survival of our increasingly threatened democracy.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's all here
This book is clear, crisp and compelling. After reading it you will wonder what is holding up the process. Holtzman's expertise and experience shows. The historical perspective is enlightening and the legal arguments are airtight. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Novices
I needed a book that would explain the basics and give me the confidence I needed to draft contracts. This book hit the spot. The author, deftly explains the basics of contracts, boilerplate terms and what not to do. It was simple, funny and very informative. I was specifically looking for information on business sales contracts but found a lot of information about stock purchases, employee contracts etc., things I will need to know more about in the future. The CD was also very helpful with a wealth of document examples. I would heartily recommend this book for others like me, newcomers to the business world. Once you have the basics or wish to delve deeper into the legal jungle then you will need a more indepth text. However for those without a legal background and in need of a concise, easy to understand and informative book on business contracts, this is the book for us. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Carrying on the conversation...
Linda Monk's book on the American Constitution, `The Words We Live By', is a wonderfully accessible and interesting introduction to the foundational document of the American polity. She starts in her introductory material by presenting the Constitution not as a dry and dusty piece of parchment to be revered but essentially ignored, but rather as an engagement of peoples in open conversation, something that can and should have an impact on the daily life and work of all Americans.Drawing inspiration from Judge Learned Hand, she states, `For the Constitution to have meaning, it must be not only the words we recite, but also the words we live by.'
5-0 out of 5 stars Constitution
As a student who began an in-depth study of the Constitution this year, this book was my introduction to the Constitution. Never having known that much about the government or Constitution, this book was incredibly helpful in giving a fairly deep overview of what the Constitution meant, clause by clause.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-read for licensors
I have studied and compared Open Source licenses for a number of years.I came to the conclusion that the licenses created by Mr. Rosen were the best and I adopted one of them for my own Open Source projects.I have also read his book on the subject and I have concluded that it is also the best in its field.I recommend his book as a must-read for licensors of Open Source content.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for reference
When I recieved this book I was excited, finally I could read a book which would help my brain really understand all the licenses! I sat down to read it, and was impressed with how the author took the popular licenses and broke them down into more easily understandable. I mean, they *are* fairly straight forward, but the author gets into what they actually mean in legal terms, and that's interesting.
5-0 out of 5 stars Readable and by a Lawyer.
Open source software is growing explosively around the world. The SourceForge web site now lists 87,006 projects being done by 912,545 people. That's almost a million people writing code, probably more than all of the programmers employed by Microsoft, Oracle, IBM, etc. etc.

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs Editing
The book is certainly packed with a lot of valuable information, and I suggest purchasing it if you plan on writing any government proposals, or managing government contracts.Just be prepared to filter through a lot of bad editing, spelling errors, sentences that make no sense, incorrect wording that render the sentence incorrect, and, at certain times, words that do not exist. For example, the word "definitized" appears many times; and I don't think the government has ever "estopped" invoking ceiling price limitations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
I purchased "The Lawyer's Career Change Handbook" along with other books written for people who have (or will soon have) law degrees, but are not sure they want to practice law. This book has been an invaluable tool in helping me realize where I want to go with my life. What I like most about it is that it includes exercises to make its readers think critically about their own skills, interests, and requirements in the workplace.I find that the book is very practical, and although I am just begining my job search, it has been helpful as a tool to prioritize what I'm looking for in an employer.
1-0 out of 5 stars Repetitive Rehash
This is a book like the dozens of other career change ones out there - you can find this information in publications from years ago, and with much better advice. No new information, and would only help lawyers who would lack the imagination to think of "legal publishing" or "in-house counsel" as career options. Truly unhelpul.

2-0 out of 5 stars Do support Dressler's income by buying his supplements
Do yourself a favor...if you are assigned this textbook go ahead and buy the Black Letter Outline series by Dressler even if you don't use it until closer to finals. It gives you what you need to know and simplifies things so that you don't have to search round and round for it in the textbook. It's unfortunate Dressler feels the need to sell his supplements and as a result has to make his textbook so crappy. And yes, it really IS that bad.

5-0 out of 5 stars I read this book and it was great!
I found this book very easy to understand and informative. I have attended estate planning seminars and other financial conferences, but came away overwhelmed and confused. Jay has a great personal story that really adds to his credibility. After I finished reading it, I immediately read it again. I know what to do and what not to do. I have changed the way I do business since I read this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book
I have read hundred of books on finances and I would rate this book near the top as to its usefulness. I learned more about asset protection from reading this book than I have learned from the hundreds of hours I have spent with CPAs, attorneys and financial advisors over the years.
