4-0 out of 5 stars Fourth Estate Discussion at its Best
Although I have recently switched to another textbook for my Media Law class, I greatly enjoyed using as a class text Carter's First Amendment and the Fourth Estate. The text lent itself to excellent discussions in class and readily provided excellent case studies and reading material for the students.(Currently I use two texts for such diversity). My only concern is that, at an undergraduate level, the book is unclear on direction for the student not versed in legal and analytical thinking, and like all comphrehensive and advanced texts, a bit too overwhelming academically for freshmen and sophomores.I would highly recommend the text, however, for graduate studies in media law. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but could use explicit guidelines
Glasser's book is an admirable compilation of the different rules in most of the major countries where reporters would want to operate. It seems to be one of the few books that unifies all the rules for all the different jurisdictions. The book highlights a series of key questions such as the definitions of libel, the abilities of companies to sue on their own behalf or to protect their products, possible restrictions on covering criminal/secret procedures and privacy rules. Drawing on the knowledge of lawyers from the different countries, Glasser organizes their expertise according to these themes.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, comprehensive, indispensible
For any journalist, lawyer or for anyone with an international point of view, this book, focusing on media law throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia is at once a handbook, a compendium, a guide, and a window into different cultures and societies, offering insight as to how each nation deals with the issues of defamation, privacy, freedom of expression, and state power.

4-0 out of 5 stars Witty, a pleasurable read, but needs some editing
This is a fun book and I highly recommend it to those interested in journalism, PR and perhaps even marketing. I am no journalist so I can't make a credible judgment on how good or valid his advice is, but from a layman's (i.e. my) point of view it all seems like it makes sense.
5-0 out of 5 stars Of special interest are the lists of ready-to-use questions
An ideal addition to any journalist or author's Writer Reference shelf, The Interviewer's Handbook: A Guerrilla Guide by John Brady is a compendium of instruction into the diverse tactics and techniques of acquiring and conducting interviews by journalists and writers. Enhanced with lively anecdotes, practical advice, conventional (and unconventional!) methods for approaching varied situations, dealing with "off-the-record" issues, securing colorful quotes, even what to do when assigned to get interviews with entertainment celebrities, business leaders, and influential politicians. Of special interest are the lists of ready-to-use questions for an interview.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Interviewing" = RDI(required daily investment)
While of us do not interview celebs livelihood-wise, we all need to extricate important info from others.Whether in commerce, aerospace, security, health care, or the "Plain Jane social scene", communication skills are vital to success. Interviewing is the art form of asking (artfully constructed questions)and active listening is an opportunity to extricate "more".Seasoned journalist/author Brady shares trade secrets. "The Art of Listening" reminds us aggressive listening can mean success or failure. Quoting John Travolta--Brady reminds us that "people are interesting...you just need to ask the right questions" is a real thought pearl.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An important analysis of censorship "for children's sake"
This book is a responsible and important study of how we rationalize censorship policies to "protect" children. The interests at stake here are as obvious as they are important. The freedom of expression has long been considered the touchstone of individual liberty and, in turn, democracy. Legally, we have enacted many safeguards to protect this essential aspect of our society, and continue to give mouth service to its importance. But, even as we tout the importance of such personal freedoms, both overseas and on American soil, we are sadly failing in one critical respect:we are not instilling these values in our children.Instead, we are showing them that an authoritative regime may censor and punish unpopular or offensive speech in the name of safety and conformity. We lecture students over the values of the freedom of speech while allowing schools inappropriately broad latitude in declaring student behavior inappropriate or dangerous if it even references violent or sexual themes.Anything considered "sexual" in nature is censored from school life entirely, and even sexual education classes suffer in their ability to inform and protect students.
4-0 out of 5 stars Protectionism is Harmful to Minors
Though the scholarly discussions of legal cases were trying (pardon the pun) to get through, they were worth the effort. They helped to dramatize the incredible amounts of time, energy, and emotion misplaced in the "harm to minors" protectionism racket.Due to her civil libertarian background, I was surprised to see her frequent attempts to present (or at least understand) both sides.3-0 out of 5 stars Author Brought up Good Issues
My reading group chose this book, because we felt that there weren't many books out there that focused on the topic of censorship and the protection of children and innocence. But while she brings up many issues that shows censorship as troublesome, she addresses them in such a dry manner that it became harder to read as the book became more or a summary of all the court cases there have been regarding the issues. It would be a great book for a communication or law class, but for recreational reading, it was very difficult for us as readers to get to the end of the book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A 'must' for any public, art or business library
Whether you're involved in business, the arts, or multimedia productions, you have to consult FAIR USE, FREE USE AND USE BY PERMISSION: HOW TO HANDLE COPYRIGHTS IN ALL MEDIA. Where other books narrow the focus to copyright protection in the Internet era, FAIR USE discusses different types of copyright issues, from how to verify what copyright law 'fair' use falls under to gaining permissions, negotiating licenses, securing releases, and more. Chapters even delve into how to locate copyright holders, how to request permissions, and how to understand copyright status of a work. Far more comprehensive than competitors on the topic, this is a 'must' for any public, art or business library.
