The book "Bar Exam in a Nutshell" is a worthwhile purchase. The book provides a briliant method to identify your weaknesses for both first time takers and repeat examinees called "Forensic IRAC." This alone makes the book worthwhile. In addition, the book gives you a concise overview of the entire bar exam process in conformity with most West Nutshells which give you an overview.

1-0 out of 5 stars Essays that get into law school?
Most of these essays are garbage, foreign to what most people need to know.I'm shocked that some of these people got into law school.I'm starting to figure out why the profession is a dying one and why no one respects it.
1-0 out of 5 stars Essays that don't relate
The general tips provided about writing your personal statement are good, but are generally common sense to anyone who has taken a argumentative writing class and/or a good english class. Most books about the overall application process include these tips.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful
This book is divided up into two (or three, if you count the Games bonus section) sections. If you have been reading law school admissions books, the first will tell you ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING NEW. It is general advice about drafting a personal statement and some questions and answers from admissions officers. If you haven't been reading law school admissions books and you just want some personal statement advice, I imagine it would be very enlightening. It wasn't anything new to me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Time & Money
The Kaplan LSAT 2004 focuses primarily on general LSAT strategies which will raise most student's scores by 1-2 points only, and thats assuming you are completely unfamiliar with the test. For those serious students who are generally familiar with the LSAT and willing to work hard to improve their score Kaplan and the Princeton Review are a complete waste of time and money. In some cases, such as Kaplan's method of solving Reading Comprehension questions, they are even counterproductive and can slow you down. Most students will emerge after studying the Kaplan book feeling confused and still unprepared, as I did. I strongly recommend the PowerScore books. I purchased the PowerScore LSAT Logic Games Bible and I am now able to work almost any logic game the LSAT can throw at me with confidence. I have also just ordered the newly released PowerScore LSAT Logical Reasoning Bible. Both of these books are expensive, they will run you about $90-$100 total but from my experience they are definitly worth it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it...
This book is only good for those who really have no idea what the LSAT is.There are only a few pages on each section... and they are not all that helpful, they just tell you what kind of questions to expect... not HOW to do well on them. There are some "steps" to approaching each type of question, but I think those will end up slowing you down rather than helping you.I took an (actual) practice test totally blind before I read the book... and took another practice test out of the book... and scored only one point higher.I am relieved to hear that others believe the questions from the Kaplan book are bizarre, because I did okay on the logic game section on the actual practice LSAT (which I took without any preparation) and then, after reading the Kaplan book, totally BOMBED the logic games section in the Kaplan's practice test. Those questions WERE bizarre!1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money
This book is a waste of money. Nothing in it is useful except maybe the introduction to the question types. I suggest that you get the Powerscore Logic Games Bible, Logic Reasoning Bible (Mid August 2004 I believe), and the next 10 actual LSATs, or 10 more actual official Lsats. Read the bibles and take practice tests over and over again. Good Luck. ... Read more

I may not be the most unbiased reviewer (I want to UNC Law and know Ruth well) but this is one of the best, if not THE best, book to help law students get through their first days of law school. I use the book myself (I also teach law) and it has the best skill-building exercises I have used.As a legal writing collegue of mine said, "Ruth should walk around with a tiara all day--she really is the queen of legal writing!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Turbulence in the Legal Academy
Each of Laura Kalman's preceding books to some extent has dealt with Yale Law School: the incisive "Legal Realism at Yale"; her definitive biography of Abe Fortas; and the awesome "Strange Career of Legal Liberalism."This new and very long volume focuses upon the turbulence that descended upon Yale in the late 1960's and early 1970's. For readers whose interest in the topic does not extend to reading a 474 page, highly detailed analysis, Kalman has written an essay with the book's major themes in the volume of essays edited by Dean Kronman, "History of the Yale Law School" (also reviewed by myself on Amazon).

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Great
This book is adequate as a textbook, but it's not a great resource for what's really going on out in the world. I felt it was very academic--which can be a good thing, but I think high school students will want something a little more practical. "Street" Law should be something more connected to the streets....I just didn't think this book did the job.

4-0 out of 5 stars Street Law: A Course In Practical Law
This books gives a great overview of law related education.Students areintroduced to legal issues in the context of real life. It containspractical information for dealing with various legal problems.Studentslearn how to write to a member of Congress. This book has a section thatallows students to consider and decide the outcome of legal situations. They learn variations in local law and prodedures that focus attention onwhere the student lives. Over all I would suggest this book as a greattraining tool for the law related class study.

5-0 out of 5 stars A coherent guide for the average citizen
As a high school student who studied with this textbook, I learned terms and concepts that I could immediately apply to current events. The news on TV and in newspapers about cases were suddenly understandable to me and Ifelt connected with justice and reason.I recommend "Street Law: ACourse in Practical Law" to anyone who wants a detailed andinformative, yet comprehensive guide to the law, from torts and criminallaw, to business and family law. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great analysis of common strategic behavior problems
This is a great example of how the rigor of game theory can give startling insights into outcomes of common situations. Although I'm no mathematician or economist, all business people are at some point required to base their decisions on how they think others will behave. This book provides some great frameworks for structuring that thought process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique
Altough it's often just theory, is a unique book, rxpressing the Chicago school's view on law. Do not expect something you can use practically.

5-0 out of 5 stars A pathbreaking work of importance and clarity
This book popularizes and extends a new approach (non-cooperative game theory) to the economic analysis of law. Readable and concise, this book is a must for students and scholars wishing to understand the ways in which legal rules can be usefully modeled as non-cooperative games. As a professor in the discipline, I am awed by the important and brilliant scholarship presented in this book with superb skill. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Pathetic
Regardless of two glowing reviews that preceed by those who clearly Never read any real preparatory materials - I am here to tell that this book is worthless.I keep it in my bathroom in the event one day I run out of paper. So what then is in fact good material?Go straight to "Strategies & Tactics" by Walton and Emanuel. It is well organized, detailed, intelligently written, and thorough.Unlike the absurd sweeping generalizations made by Talamo's text, "Strategies & Tactics" delineates the several different types of questions, how to rephrase certain questions, and how to find the otherwise impossible answer. Each of the MBE subjects are treated separately because they each have a unique style affliated with that area of the law.Example: Con Law vs. Real Property. There follows each dedicated section of MBE law, MBE style questions, followed in turn by detailed answers that illucidate why a particular answer is correct or wrong, and what the trick or trap has been laid by the writers of the Exam. And a whole lot more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great help for the MBE
I read this book AFTER I failed the NY bar exam the first time around. This book was very helpful in helping to understand the MBE and the best method for studying.I felt much more confident and less stressed taking the bar again this past February, and I am surprised how much of that I can attribute to what I learned in Mr. Talamo's book!I highly recommend that ANYONE taking the MBE read this book. Then spend a few days using his techniques & see the difference!I plan to give this book as a gift to others taking the MBE too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on "How to Study for the MBE" Ive ever read!
Best book ever read on the taking of the MBE. Not only does Talamo tell you what to study, he tells you HOW. Ive read dozens of books on taking the MBE. Talamo is by far the best. He explains how to tackle the test itself. He has an easy to follow strategy for focusing on the most important areas covered on the MBE, and how these areas should be handled. If you have mountains of books from your bar review course and don't know what to do with all of it, this book is a must! Im a repeater for this bar exam and this is the first book I have ever read that is helping me learn how to study for this exam. This book is one of those you will read from cover to cover over and over again. It has given me a plan for taking this exam. As a result, Im not as stressed out over how Im going to learn all this material. Instead, I am learning how to focus on the most important stuff and learn it really well. Talamo explains how it is a waste of time to try and learn everything fairly well. He shows how you will do better on the exam by knowing just a few key areas extremely well. I can't say enough about this book. It has taken my anxiety level down a couple of notches, and given me a feeling of confidence that I CAN pass this exam! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good text-book with which to teach
I teach a legal research and writing course withthis textbook at UCLA and have found it very helpful. The book is well organized, has good homeworkproblems, reasonably clear writing and fine illustrations. My students find it very helpful in their studies. Its only two flaws are that it does not use California law in its problems and has only one problem at its end totest all of the student's research skills. In a perfect world, two comprehensive research problems would be included to ensure that students have fully grasped the principles involved. While I have used the 4th edition over the last 3 years with great success, I am confident that this 5th edition (which I have read and am presently using in my class)will be equally effective.I only give it four stars because of the two flaws described above and the limited answers to homework problems given in the teacher's edition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for basic legal research
This book explains to the first year law student how to go about legal research in the library and on the internet. It has practice exercises inthe back of the book to facilitate the learning process. It is a quickread on all the main sources of legal research and general legal writing. It breaks down the elements of research into small, easy to manage partsthat don't make you feel totally overwhelmed during your first researchpaper. I think it is a great tool for the first year law student. ... Read more
