3-0 out of 5 stars Mildly useful, but not great
This book is written with the premise in mind that the LSAT isn't beatable (i.e., there aren't tricks that will give the test-taker the keys to unlocking perfect scores every time), but with some time and effort anyone can learn techniques that will allow them to score much better than they would otherwise.
3-0 out of 5 stars Needs updating - but good reading comprehension section
Most of these off-the-shelf 1-inch thick books on LSAT prep are usually very general in nature and marginally helpful.
1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!WHATEVER YOU DO THIS IS THE WORST BOOK TO BUY!!!!!!
This book is a joke and I do not have any idea how these publishers actually got away with releasing it.I am also disappointed with Amazon's lack of quality control.First of all, the inside of the book is merely photocopied, and the ink is splotchy.Secondly, the solutions to the practice questions are transposed with other questions, so that it is very difficult to check your answers since the solutions are printed underneath the wrong questions!!Don't make the same mistake I did...spend the money on Kaplan or Princeton Review because you get what you pay for.Again, don't give Nova any more money and don't buy any of their products!!!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
Oh thanksgiving day, I am thankful for this book and the great help it was for me during the past year.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book on the Subject
This is the only book you will need to help you apply to law school. The author covers everything from personal statements to Loan repayment programs at top schools. The author focus on top twenty schools but the information should be helpful to anyone. The best part is hundreds of quotes on all subjects directly from the deans of admissions at top schools. It includes quotes from the deans at every school in the top 15 in the U.S. News and world report rankings and a number of other institutions including Boston College, George Washington, USC, UCLA, and Boston University. This is particularly helpful if you are targeting one of these top schools. There are executive summaries at the end of the chapters if you don't have time to read the entire book. This work will help anyone taking the application process seriously to maximize their chances of getting into the best school they can.

4-0 out of 5 stars best for people who are still deciding whether to apply
This book certainly has some helpful information, but the author spends a good bit of time trying to help the reader make sure that he/she wants to go to law school and wants to be a laywer. He does some motive-chekcing (Why do want to go to LS? Are you sure you're doing it for the right reasons? etc). This may prove helpful for those who are still unsure, but not for those who have already thought through these questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars CRACKING THE LSAT is a 'must have' for any serious law student.
The 2007 edition of Cracking the LSAT offers a range of study options, from classroom courses and private tutoring to online courses and books - and enhancing all these methods is a book packed with proven techniques from experts. CRACKING THE LSAT reviews the major skills needed to ace the test, offers up a customized study plan with plenty of reviews and tests supplemented online, and includes six full-length practice tests. From approaches and variations to clue types and summaries, CRACKING THE LSAT is a 'must have' for any serious law student.
3-0 out of 5 stars Inadequate
This book is only good for someone who has no idea what the LSAT is and who aims to get an average score. The book does put forth some good techniques but do not be fooled into buying this book b/c of the DVD. The DVD is mostly unhelpful and consists of maybe 20 minutes of very broad and general knowledge.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book - DVD almost useless
The information provided in the book is well organized and does a good job of explaining steps and strategies. I would recommend the book without hesitation. However, if like me, you buy it thinking the DVD would be a good way to supplement the material, you'll probably be disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
I purchased "The Lawyer's Career Change Handbook" along with other books written for people who have (or will soon have) law degrees, but are not sure they want to practice law. This book has been an invaluable tool in helping me realize where I want to go with my life. What I like most about it is that it includes exercises to make its readers think critically about their own skills, interests, and requirements in the workplace.I find that the book is very practical, and although I am just begining my job search, it has been helpful as a tool to prioritize what I'm looking for in an employer.
1-0 out of 5 stars Repetitive Rehash
This is a book like the dozens of other career change ones out there - you can find this information in publications from years ago, and with much better advice. No new information, and would only help lawyers who would lack the imagination to think of "legal publishing" or "in-house counsel" as career options. Truly unhelpul.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource That WIll Make You Think
When I picked up this book I knew that I had always had an interest in law, but was unsure if I wanted to work for a law firm. Before going to law school I wanted an idea of exactly what my options might be after school.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for anyone interested in mock trial
While working with my mock trial team at Georgetown University, I urged everyone on the team to buy a copy of this book. Because we didn't have a coach, having some source of authority on numerous issues relating to mock trial was critical. This book fit those needs perfectly. Not only do the authors walk through the basics of a trial, but they also include numerous tips for those already advanced in trial advocacy. The Georgetown team won its division at the 2002 College Mock Trial Nationals, placing 2nd in the country, beating far more experienced and well-coached teams. This book was part of that surprising success. It is a must-read for anyone looking to be more competitive and effective in the courtroom.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Decade Obsolete
While this book might be useful if you're studying to take the 1996 LSAT or if you want to trace the modern evolution of the LSAT, it's of limited use to anyone studying to take the LSAT today. In looking at almost the LSATs between 1995 and today (2005), one will see that the test evolves slowly and steadily, probably to add a touch of uncertainty for test-takers and to stay one step ahead of the test prep companies. The LSATs over the past decade superficially bear a close resemblance to one another, but closer inspection reveals that the net result is a tremendous change in the types and the frequencies of logic game formats, logical reasoning questions, and reading comprehension questions. Rather than buying this book and risking becoming a dinosaur, you're much better of buying the most recent editions of the "Official LSAT Preptest" books, new versions of which are constantly being released.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but not priority #1
There is some question of the utility of this book. All of these tests were created in whole or in part before the current LSAT test producer (ACT) took over from LSAS.PrepTests before 11 (including 18 & 16) were made entirely by LSAS.Tests 12-15 were partly written by ACT but they had to use some of LSAS's questions. After December 1995 all the tests were made wholy by ACT (Preptest 17, the "Official LSAT PrepTest with Explanations", the SuperPrep tests, and PrepTests 19+).
5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what it says
What can I say-- this is, in fact, a collection of 10 actual LSATs.Great practice for the months prior to taking the test.I particularly like the actual LSAT answer sheets in the back of the book, perforated for easy tear out, one for each test. Not that you necessarily need practice filling in the bubbles, but it's more accurate an experience than doing a computer program and double-clicking all your answers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A friendly, but realistic, guide to law school
Deaver's book is a good, light read. The main, primary focus of the book is to: (1) introduce you to an outlining system to prepare for your exams (and to help you study for them) and (2) to give you a brief, but reasonably thorough review of your entire law school experience, from the pros and cons of law review to how to write a good scholarly paper. Note the short page length--only about 200 pages. Thus, the book doesn't cover *everything* about law school, but it is a very good start. In addition to law school itself, it has some good overviews and tips about job prospects, the legal profession, summer opportunities, etc. It also has a brief overview of the LSAT and application process, although these areas are really not that informative to be worthy of publication (the main point of the book is, as I said, the outlining system and a rough overview of the law school experience itself--which this book does very well). It is written in an easy, casual manner and the author can be funny at times, too. All in all, a good, light, easy read about how to best study for law school classes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Law School
This was an excellent book; I am still working on my undergraduate degree planning on attending law school. I know people who are attorneys and I have received there feedback but this book was so much more in depth and precise. I am doing a lot of research on what to expect during law school and how to get into a high tier institution. This book tells it all from admissions to class selection to internships. Law school confidential is a must read if you are planning towards law school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent if you're not sure if law school is what you want.
My ten year career has been in software development management. I have aspirations for business management as well as politics. So I thought perhaps a J.D. would help me further those goals. This book helped inform me exactly what to expect in law school, the tests, the application process, etc. It gives some ideas of what one can do with the degree, etc. It's a nice short book that you can read in one sitting. It was nice to be able to do that and figure out whether or not I really wanted to invest 3 years in law school. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars It is good for....

4-0 out of 5 stars Extra Material for Studying
LSAT 180 is interesting in that it is supposed to be more difficult than regular LSAT questions but is also intended to help improve your LSAT taking-skills.The questions are difficult but all they aren't perfect.
3-0 out of 5 stars Get Real PrepTest Questions
As one of the other reviewers pointed out, the questions used for prep in this book are very different from the actual LSAT questions that you'll be tested on.Not only are the style of writing and the format of the questions different in LSAT 180 than on an actual LSAT exam, but also, an equally persuasive case could be made for more than one of the answer choices in some of LSAT 180's Kaplan-created questions. The same isn't true on an actual LSAT exam (or is very rarely true) because once the subtleties of actual PrepTest questions are mastered, there is almost always a clearly superior answer. On LSAT 180, I found myself unconvinced in several instances by Kaplan's explanations as to why their preferred answer choice was superior to one of the other answer choices available. This never happens on a real LSAT PrepTest once you have grasped the stimulus and the question stem, with all their subtleties. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars The fun is in seeing what's dated
Professor Llewellyn's distinguished collection of lectures is best used nowadays, in my opinion, as a baseline to see what has changed in the legal profession and what has not.Llewellyn's discussion of the case system is a terrific look at the judge's toolbox, but law students today cannot rely on a deep understanding of the case system to become good lawyers -- the proliferation of other forms of law, particularly statutory and administrative law, is too great. On the other hand, Llewellyn's extreme statement of the legal realist position -- still only one competing theory of law when he gave his lectures -- is now the undisputed champion of the legal discipline, and it's fascinating to travel back to a time when the author felt the need to be an apologist for it.The chapters that stand up best, in my opinion, are the ones discussing the dilemma of siding with the powerful after graduation; this is a topic that only becomes more timely as expenses rise and the pressure to join Big Law grows for new law graduates.I would especially recommend this book for casual students of legal history or jurisprudence.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Than a Law School Classic
Llewellyn wrote "Bramble Bush" as an introduction for law students, which is how I first read it in 1967. Nevertheless, practicing lawyers would profit from re-reading this wonderful book every several years, especially before working on an important appeal or on a case that may not be decided solely by the application of settled law. Its chapters on "This Case System" are a masterful exposition on how to understand, apply, and distinguish legal precedents. Another essential work on the development of caselaw is Cardozo's "The Nature of the Judicial Process." For a thoughtful introduction to the role of the lawyer in actual practice, I recommend, both to studends and practitioners, the advisedly titled "What Every Lawyer Knows" by Walter T. Fisher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Standing the test of time.....
I actually felt myself getting smarter while reading this book.Outside of just covering "technicalities" of studying law, he also offers a fascinating perspective on the study and practice of law in relation to the lawyer's life (money/finc. security as primary motive for entering legal profession.)Also interesting are his views on making/missing law review and the effect this has on 2Ls.Overall, an excellent read, time well spent, and very deserving of the word "classic." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Buy It!
I bought this book from Amazon after a rough sophomore year.I entered college knowing that I wanted to go to law school, but got caught up in the Greek scene and partied a little too much (not a whole lot, but let's just say that I didn't have a 4.0).This book was like a bucket of cold water in the face.It gives some great advice and I still read through it occasionally a year later.Susan takes a hard-stance approach that encourages the reader to have realistic expectations for law school, and gives some incredible advice for making the best choices in your given situation.I credit her as the catalyst for my academic makeover.Read this book for some great tips, and pick it up as soon as possible. You need to start preparing early if you are aiming for the top schools, and Susan gives the best advice that I have read so far.

4-0 out of 5 stars Recommended!
The author explains in a no-nonsense manner the myths that some of us hold about which schools are the "best" and how such conclusions are reached. While everyone relies on U.S. News's magazine rankings, Susan Estrich emphasizes that the location is what matters the most in choosing a law school.Where will you end up practicing? That is key.And when it comes to recommendations, it does not matter that someone well-known is writing it.The people at admissions will also not care who your father is.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best advice ever
I just finished my freshman year in college and I found this book to be an excellent starting point for designing my path to law school. It contains lots of info on what makes a good law school and it's not all based on what U.S. News or Princeton Review has to say. The advice in the book helps you to decide the best route for yourself, not just which ivy league to choose. She gives advice useful from your first year in undergrad to your first year in law school. It also has the extra benefit of being written by an insider in the academic world. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Too many typos
This book is wrought with typos. It makes me wonder:If there are so many problems I can already see, how many are there that I can't see (e.g. Questions unlike those you will see on the real LSAT,flawed reasoning, incomplete information, etc).Stay away...

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, but a more indepth prep is needed
This was the first test prep book I used.I just finished it over the weekend.I will certainly have to buy a more indepth book to continue my preparation. The logic games section has good tips, but the book and this section in particular, is just too short.

5-0 out of 5 stars great for an anxious test-taker
This book made reviewing for the LSAT easy. I suggest getting a few different LSAT prep books and also a bunch of real tests. Some books are better than others, and this one is a really good overall view of the test and strategies. I think this one and the Arco book are good. I also foudn NOVA's to be good.Kaplan and PR were waaaay too basic and was mostly annoying filler.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful in IRAC Structure
If you have just started law school, or if you are if you are required to take the FYLSE and do not have the benefit of Professor Bracci's lectures on Essay writing, then, these tapes are very helpful. 5-0 out of 5 stars Job Well Done!
Excellent work; targets to enhance your written analytical capabilities.Essay hypos, Crim algorithm's, etc. I was glad I had it before exams. Besure to listen more than once or you'll miss the more salient points of thelecture and exam preparation. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good story, but no real guidance
I read One L and enjoyed Turow's story.I do think the sharing of his daily life and emotions as a first year law student is beneficial. However, I have also read The Law School Breakthrough by Chris Yianilos.Yianilos gives a very detailed description of the tools and techniques needed in order to not only survive the first year, but to excel in your class. While I did like reading One L, I feel like the Law School Breakthrough is the book to get if you're looking for concrete guidance for law school success.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless Account of One L
This book was recommended to me by a friend who recently graduated from law school. I had asked her about interesting reading material before my first year, and she felt that Turow's "One L" would be a good start for me. As soon as I picked up the book, I was captivated by the narrative and honest tone of Turow's account. Although the account itself is from the 70s, there is a timeless quality in Turow's writing that brings his law student experience to life. This novel is definitely worth reading, especially for those who are thinking about law school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read
This book is a surprise. It is a great read. You may think it will be on the predictible side, but Turow is a creative writer who understands what readers want. You can't miss with one of his books, this one is an easy read. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for criminal procedure.
This supplement is a must.It will save you time and energy. Bloom and Brodin give clean definitions for 4th amendment, 5th, and 6th. A friend of mine who passed the July 05 CA Bar (on the first attempt), used this book as her sole preparation for criminal procedure essay section. The checklist located in the appendix will ensure that you will not miss any issues.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great supplement but bad teacher
I just used this book to help me study for my CrimPro exam.I thought it was very, very helpful, but only because I had read my casebook and attended class all semester.Unlike Glannon's CivPro E&E (which is a MUST-BUY for any 1L), this book would not have been valuable if I had opened it during the semester; it was only valuable before my exam as a review. It does not provide insight into why the Supreme Court decided certain things; it simply gives us the rules the Court spat out with a miniscule amount of justification, if any.Your casebook and professor would likely discuss the reasons why the Court decided the way it did and why the concurring or dissenting justices reasoned the way they did.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not a helpful study aid
This book was a real disappointment compared to others in the examples and explanations series. Most of the examples were simply cases that if you had studied at all you would already know.If you didn't bother to do the reading for your class, then maybe it would be helpful. ... Read more
