1-0 out of 5 stars Never Use it
I had to purchase this manual for my 1st Year Legal Writing class in Fall 2000.That was the last time I ever used it! Everyone I know uses the Blue Book. You'll probably never use the ALWD manual outside of your law school class.

1-0 out of 5 stars Never Again . . .
I was required to use ALWD's Citation System in law school, in part because one of the professors is a member. However, as I do not work around any of the Courts that use it (e.g. 11th Cir., Montana, the Marshall Islands), then it is absolutely useless.
1-0 out of 5 stars I didn't know how bad it was 'til I started blue-booking
There are several reasons this book is inferior to the Harvard Blue Book (HBB).

5-0 out of 5 stars If you must have a day in court, make it a good one!
Reading this book and following the steps gave me a VICTORY on my day in court. This book, a great list of questions for the officer about my particular infraction (from the web), and the vehicle codes, were the only materials I used.I felt comfortable presenting my case and beating the wrap.It was awesome. The judge said he believed that I was indeed driving safely that day, "case dismissed".And I now *know* that I was truly not guilty.Using what I learned, I also assisted my mother in getting out of a Jaywalking ticket!I definitely recommend it for it's straightforwardness and simplicity and it's thoroughness.

2-0 out of 5 stars A SO-SO Book.
This book is not too bad. It is full of great tips and tactics. But alot of it is common sense. If you really want to beat a speeding ticket and want to learn all about the equipment the police use to nail you, I suggest you buy the book called The Educated Guide to Speeding Tickets by Richard Wallace. He is an ex cop and who knows more about radar, speeding tickets than a cop. He has written a great book. His book helped me beat 2 speeding tickets so far. You can buy it right here at Amazon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad
The author suggests a lot of common sense ideas on how to deal with police officers and with the court, such as being polite to the police officer no matter how rude or how evil thier tactics were to catch you.It also gives some really good suggestions on what to say and what not to say to the officer or in court.I can't say it works cuz since I bought the book, I've also bought a radar detector and that has saved me more than the book.Simplicity and the ideas written in this book are the basis of my rating. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Product
This is the legal thesaurus that all my law professors suggested. So far it has been very helpful in research and writing.

Next to case law, I find Burton's Legal Thesaurus indispensible in writing appellate briefs. I only wish it were available in a downloadable form for use with my word processing program.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone even thinking of getting a divorce!
I bought this book and even though I used a lawyer it was great.I totally understood everything to expect and it did not seem so confusing.I really liked seeing what the forms are.The info about mediation would have helped me a lot if I ordered the book before we went to the lawyer. The advice about custody was so right.

2-0 out of 5 stars divorce is STILL too difficult even with this book..
even with the book, i feel like its too much of a maze for us.. we might have to get a lawyer after all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand and very helpful
This book was so helpful. It explained the laws and my alternatives. Even though I ended up getting an attorney because my case was reallycomplicated and nasty, I used the book to answer questions that came up.Being able to look at the forms in the book really helped me to understandwhat my attorney was doing ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Not a sleeping pill
Burnhams book on U.S. law and its legal system is great for anyone who wants to learn or study U.S. law. It is comprehensive in that it provides the basics on the most important parts of substantive and procedural law. For foreign law students and jurists in particular it gives a well written and very understandable introduction into U.S. law. Professor Burnham seems to intentionally adress "foreigners" in certain sections explaining the similarities, but also the existing differences between the common law system and the civil law system (as he defines the central European legal system). This makes many topics easier to understand for outsiders. The in depth explanation of the adversary system and its implications for some U.S. particularities is also valuable, as are the guidelines for legal reserch.
5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive!
I have used the Burnham book for five years in my Introduction to American Law class of foreign LL.M students. This is the only book I have found that gives such a comprehensive introduction to American law.It providesan excellent survey. It is at once complete enough to use alone for acourse, and at the same time useful as a foundation for special explorationof specific areas of interest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Intro to the Law and Legal System of the US 1999
I have recommended this book to every one of my colleagues who has taught the American legal system course in our London programe. When I heard of the publication of the second edition, I immediately asked my Westrepresentative to favor me with a desk copy. The task of finding materialssuitable for lawyers pursuing a comparative master's degree at Notre Damebedeviled me for several years.Almost every introductory text on theAmerican legal system seemed to offer a basic understanding of Americanhistory in general and Constitutional history in particular.Books thattreated fundamentals of the adversary system, or that described the legalprofession or the judicial system, often contained little if any expositionof substantive areas of the law.Materials that described substantivelegal areas often anticipated an understanding of the institutional regimethat applied the law.The day Burnham's Introduction to the Law and LegalSystem of the United States crossed my desk was bright indeed. As Iscanned the table of contents, I was struck at how it tracked the syllabusof the course I was preparing to teach. Its coverage of legal institutionswas complete in five chapters. The basics of criminal and civil procedurewere available, and eight additional chapters, each treating a legalsubject area, were offered.Professor Burnham imaginatively arranged thematerial to facilitate coverage via a survey or in much greater depthresponding to the background of the students or the amount of timeavailable for the course. The book has now been used on several occasions. The students and I have found it to be a strong asset in learning aboutthe American legal system. The book also serves as a marvelous inexpensiveresource for foreign students to carry home with them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for lawyers
I am a physician who tested out of all college English to focus on science. Writing chart notes, scientific articles, or even parts of textbooks does not prepare one for the type of writing one must do when performing legal work.
5-0 out of 5 stars Shockingly good
In short, this is the first and only style guide that I have ever been excited to continue reading and share with others. It has really improvedmy writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lebaron Charts New Waters
This is an extraordinary book. For those of us involved in cross-cultural training and negotiations work, this book brings together a progressive practioner's life experience and emotional intelligence to create new ways of framing our work. I used up a "highlighter" through the first two chapters. If your work is in mediation, cross-cultural communication, conflict resolution, negotiation, or facilitation, this book is a great investment. If you just want to know more about interactions between people and yourself, and come to better understand the internal dialogues you have when you are conflicted, this is a great, entertaining, and enlightening read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Should Be Required Reading for First Year
Professor Huhn has written a road map to the framing of legal arguments that makes the mysterious enterprise of legal analysis comprehensible in a way that is very useful both for exams and for writing and research assignments. I am confident that this book will retain its utility right on through bar prep and beyond. It has already helped me in writing a brief on a difficult case in my summer job.
5-0 out of 5 stars Concise and Useful
I was a student in Professor Huhn's Constitutional Law class in 2002 and used this book to answer essay questions on his final examinations. He is a tremendously talented professor who provides the historical backdrop behind many of the cases covered in class. This book does a great job presenting the methods he uses in his classroom to motivate indepedent argument. It is a great book to have whether you are a law student, a lawyer, or neither.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for law students
This is an easy-to-read exploration of just what motivates our courts. The author provides a compelling view of what factors courts consider when they issue the decisions that affect our lives. He places his discussion in the context of some of the most influential court cases, which makes this a lively and stimulating read.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great introduction to commercial paper!
I have to disagree with the last reviewer. This book was thorough, and handled commercial paper in a simply and easy to understand way. I didn't take commercial paper in law school, and was completely unfamiliar with the lay of the land. This book was an excellent starting point and covered all the basics necessary to do well on the bar exam. If you are like the last reviewer, and already have a solid enough grasp on the subject matter to be able to nitpick discrepancies between different versions of the UCC, then this might not be a good book for you. But if you are simply looking for a solid introduction to the subject, I highly recommend this book. Considering how lost I was in commercial paper, it was a godsend!

1-0 out of 5 stars This Book Sucks
Don't bother buying this book if your professor teaches the 2004 version of the UCC.I spent hours trying to figure out why one of the chapters was so off base with regard to Accomodation Parties; then I realized the book was dealing with the pre-2002 version of the Code.Brook barely acknowledges the 2004 changes except to note that there are, in fact, changes.Gee, thanks. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A Farrago of Foolishness
There is not a chapter in this book - indeed, if you omit the index, it would hard to find a five-page stretch - that does not swarm with errors and absurdities. And what is notable is that the errors cannot be classed among those that even the well-informed are liable to make from time to time. They are not mere slips of the pen, they are not minor or superficial, nor of the kind that can simply be skipped over because they play little role in the argument that is being developed. No, they are everywhere manifestations of confusion and ignorance.Posner's merry obliviousness to even the simplest facts about literary interpretation and history is in itself remarkable enough, but what is truly extraordinary is the recklessness with which he parades his ignorance for all to see.1-0 out of 5 stars tiresome and ignorant
The problem is simply that Posner knows very little about literature andliterary history. Thus he is given to fatuous efforts such as hisspeculations on why Shakespeare did not publish his collected plays whenthe fact is that in the early 17th century, playwrights made very littlefrom publishing their writings, and hardly anyone bothered to publish theircollected works.(When Ben Jonson did in 1616, he was widely ridiculed.) Posner's book is riddled with egregious misstatements of this sort, whichwould be comcial to anyone with the most basic education in literaryhistory. In attempting to draw legal conclusions based on faultyinformation of this sort, he only creates further confusion.

4-0 out of 5 stars No deconstructionist twaddle- Rather, illuminating insights
Justice Posner is one of the more wondrous polymaths of his generation.Law and Literature, although not the greater of his achievements, is a thoughtful opus, full of illuminating insights.I read his book 6 or 7years ago but I remember how impressed I was by the sharpness of hisanalysis of the legal implications of Kafka's Trial and Melville's BillyBudd.I have been roused to giving my opinion because all the othercommentators are so uniformly negative about the book.Clearly, eitherthey are missing something, or I am wide off the mark.I proposeit's theformer, and recommend "Law and Literature" to anyone who wants toknow how one of the heights of contemporary legal thought tackles many ofthe issues that have occupied anyone who knows the law and enjoysliterature. The fact that Posner doesn't indulge in deconstructionisttwaddle is no reason to abstain. ...
