3-0 out of 5 stars Good textbook for intro class
I suppose the most important question is why are you interested in this book.It would make a good textbook for an intro type class in this area or would be good for someone who doesn't know DNA analysis, but is involved in criminalistics. The level of detail is insufficient for anyone who actually understands the molecular approaches. It spends a fair bit of time talking about cases and HOW this particular approach was once useful. These are interesting little stories, but the book really didn't give me what I wanted.I have a background in molecular genetics and was interested in making a career shift to DNA forensics. There was little of value for me because it never really got to the details.I think it would be good for a class because it provides historical perspective on the now outdated techniques that would be important background for someone who never knew anything about the development of the previous techniques and only learned what is current today, but to someone who has that background...seemed like it just added a new chapter to an otherwise outdated book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great intro for the beginner
Having left behind my interest in genetics in order to pursue tax accountancy, I've always been fascinated by accounts of DNA typing. This book provides a wonderful introduction that is accessible to even the novice geneticist like myself.Much of the information Rudin and Inman give is quite practical; with some help from a friend who works in a medical lab I was able to set up my own electrophoresis gels and PCR.A word of caution to the amateur, however:make sure you practice before drawing any conclusions from the "evidence."My wife, Amy, wouldn't speak to me for a week after I claimed that a stain on our bed linen did not match my DNA.It turned out that she had spilled some ice cream.

3-0 out of 5 stars vivid introduction to forensic genotyping techniques
Nice figures, photos, schemes, and U.S. tables; lively comparisons show that authors are good teachers. Though technical part of the book outdates fast necessarily (acronym SNP has not been coined in 1996 yet), it is a shame that an interpretation part of the book neglects the current knowledge. Bayes theorem is known since 1763 and, nevertheless, likelihood ratio is not even mentined in the book! Books of Evett and Weir or of Robertson and Vignaux cannot be substituted by this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for University Administrators
Kaplin & Lee's "The Law of Higher Education (Third Edition)" was the required text for a graduate course, "Legal Aspects of Higher Education" and should be present on the bookshelf of any university administrator. The book's subtitle, "A Comprehensive Guide to Legal Implications of Administrative Decision Making," is wholly accurate in describing the scope and utility of this massive tome (over 1,000 pages from cover to cover).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Advice on Probating an Estate
My brother and I are in the process of probating my Mom's estate with the assistance of this excellent book by Nissley. It hops around a little bit, but all the information is between the covers. So far we have had zero problems. We have not had to consult with an attorney nor a paralegal to have our forms filed with the court. This book is going to save us time and money - about $5,000 on my Mom's small estate.Thank you Julia Nissley and Nolo Press!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
I used this book to administer an estate in CA. It walked me through the entire process and the forms provided in the book were very helpful. It saved us a lot of fees that would normally go to an attorney and turned what could've been a mysterious legal jumble into a step-by-step process that could be understood.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative and easy to follow
This book is an absolute life saver for those trying to muddle through the United State's fiance/spouse visa process. It include step-by-step and line-by-line instructions on all of the forms and tries to answer any questions you might have. It also includes checklists in the back for each visa process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book - Well Written and Highly Recommended
My wife and I were married in St. Petersburg, Russia. When I returned to the USA, I began the immigration process for her to obtain her visa so that we could be together as husband and wife. Not knowing the first thing about which forms to fill out, I did a lot of online research, and chose to purchase this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Better than a lawyer

5-0 out of 5 stars For trial lawyers
I just finished this book. As a trial lawyer, I have used various trial presentation methods for years. I am always looking for new ideas, however. This book, perhaps because it is written by a trial lawyer, had excellent examples that were very helpful to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gives you an edge over the others
Rogers' book is an easy-to-understand, intuitive and state of the art guide to trial lawyers for getting an edge on the opposition. For some of us, "technology" is a four letter word. Rogers de-mystifies it, and shows how simple it is to use it to persuade ... and to win.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Technical Guide
Use of technology in the courtroom is a fast evolving area of trial practice with which most lawyers are not familiar. This book is a practical, easy to use guide which emphasizes the utility of programs such as Powerpoint and Sanction II in a real courtroom setting. It uses typical case fact patterns to provide context for the learning experience. The layout is graphic-intensive, clear and simple to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Legal Contracts
I found this book most useful for the CD-ROM's legal contracts. As a consultant, I use these for all my clients.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good content, bad editing
There is a lot of good information and discussion in this book about the topics which a contract should cover. It falls down, however, when it comes to the actual contracts.Just comparing the website and the custom software contracts, there are differences where there shouldn't be.In the software contract, it's theCustomer, in the website contract, it's the Client.A bit more than half of the contract sections with (mostly) identical headings and purpose have unexplained differences between them. Many of these differences are not trivial. In the text, the contracts are interleaved with explanations, but often the commentary/annotations are just restatements of the contract itself, which is a real time-waster, especially if you've read the background material earlier in the book.Other occasional editing snafus include explanatory comments inside the contract text, formatting syntax commands on the page (END SECTION), and a less than clear and concise structure for indicating optional clauses (the intended combinations aren't always clear, even though customization is to be expected).Given the fuzzy line between a website and a web application (ie 'custom software' (and really, what website is NOT custom?)), and given the marked similarities in over half of the two contracts, why not cover the overlapping sections just once, instead of twice, but inconsistently? And the sections that don't overlap, or overlap badly? No real explanation as to the reasons for the differences.I hope I don't have the same problems with the two versions of the independent contractor agreement.Fishman has written a pile of legal books for the layman, including the more recent "Consultant And Independent Contractor Agreements 5th Edition".I have to wonder: "Quantity over quality?"Perhaps when he is working on the next edition of this book ("Legal Guide to Web & Software Development", due out 8/2007), he will take the time to re-organize some of the content and get a capable editor.A determined reader can sort out the differences on their own, but it need not be so difficult. The content is 5 stars (including 24 documents in RTF format), but making it work for you is a real pain if you care about details.

As a [...] consumer, I have yet to buy a book from these publishers that wasn't worth the asking price. These books are that useful! As a practicing paralegal in the Golden State, I consider myself fairly industry savvy but still found information contained within that I didn't find elsewhere.I'm not comfortable with [...] having the monopoly on subjects of this nature because any time there is only 1 provider of any given thing, that provider tends to gouge consumers. That will changeas competition develops. In the interrim, however, this book is a good resource.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars THANKS NOLO for putting this book out!JUST what I needed!
I LOVE this book!Very thorough, endless hints and tips.I am no longer afraid or to bring my own case and feel informed and competent. This book tells you with frank honesty what to expect, where you may encounter trouble and helps you handle almost any situation.I recommend it to EVERYONE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Legal Information You Can Bank On!
In my capacity of monitoring the information desk for Chicago's main library, the Harold Washington Library, I come in contact with numerous people who are embroiled in legal battles and who need some accurate guidance in plain English. This book, "Represent Yourself In Court," is one of the books I recommend the most for those who have minor legal issues and can't afford (or choose not) to hire an attorney. It walks you through a whole range of legal proceedings from start to finish. It also presents questions for you to ponder before you decide to initiate legal action. It's written for civil litigation, not criminal. It also gives information about settling a matter, and gives pointers on how to decide if yu need professional help.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Good, but necessarily limited, intro to the legal system
Overall, I'd give this a positive rating, but since it's written for all 50 states, it is so broad in its coverage that it makes it difficult to learn about how to pursue your lawsuit in your particular state.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars a little dated, but...
I'll second the previous reviewer's call for an updated edition.Apparently the next edition, the 8th, is due for release in February 2008.

4-0 out of 5 stars Time for an 8th Edition?
Akehurst's Modern Introduction to International Law provides a sound basis for understanding the United Nations, treaties, and international law. The only drawback to the book is that the material is becoming somewaht dated with its 1997 copyright.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good book, good price
This book is the essential guide to international law. Not only does it cover important themes and treaties over every conceivable topic, it does so without too much legal jargon and too much dumbing down. It hits the perfect average reading level and provides citations to the primary sources from which statements are taken for further research and understanding. It is extrememly well organized. 4-0 out of 5 stars Useful reference book
The "Oxford Guide to US Supreme Court Decisions" is not much more than that. It gives an extremely expansive overview of all US Supreme Court cases that can remotely be considered important, throughout the period of its existence. Every case contains information on the reference number, the composition of the majority, concurrence and dissents, and a summary of what the case or controversy was about by a legal scholar.
5-0 out of 5 stars Oxford Guire to US Supreme Court Decisions
This is a handy reference to quickly correlate discussions of past decisions in the many articles on supreme court actions as well as during the confirmation process. It is a good book for every supreme court watcher to have on the shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction Book
This book is perfect if you are interested in important decisions of the Supreme court but do not want to spend hours reading arguments, decisions and dissents in a civics book or findlaw.Oxford explains what happened in the case, why it is important and what the Supreme Court's decision did for American law.

5-0 out of 5 stars SHOULD BE MANDATORY READING FOR LAW SCHOOL ADVOCACY CLASSES
In my 40 years of trial practice, few books are better organized, or present more useful insights in how to try cases.David Berg has been in the pits, has dozens of verdicts in all kinds of civil and criminal cases-everything from murder to patent infringement-and writes about them very well.Drawing on his experience, David explains the importance, goals, and methods of achieving those goals, for each step of representation, from the first meeting with the client, to the final words of closing argument. And while this isn't one of those "war story" book, he does use examples from his own cases and those of other trial lawyers to make his points. This book is a "must read," not just for aspiring trial lawyers, but for all who want to enhance their skills in the courtroom. It should be mandatory reading for law school advocacy classes.
5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ!
Each arena has it's Michael Jordan. In the courtroom, it is David Berg. And Berg has taken this natural talent and time-honed skill to a new level as he unlocks certain secrets that have catapulted him to the top of his profession. What most have considered his "magic," he explains as common sense practice. This book should be a required text at every law school. Those in the legal profession should not just read this, they should study it.The difference it will make in case results more than pays for the book, over and over again.

The Trial Lawyer is a very highly recommended advice guide and strongly recommended reading for aspiring and newly practicing trial lawyers alike. ... Read more
