2-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre Fiction
Why was this book in the non-fiction section at the library? I can understand changing the names of people but counties? There is no Siletz County, Oregon. Why not make up the state too? As fiction there leaves a lot to be desired. The back jacket says"truth is stranger than fiction". Either write non-fiction with names changed to protect identities or write a compelling novel. This is neither.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully entertaining story
Bill Merritt has written a wonderfully entertaining fable about young lawyers learning the ropes, a delightful cast of society's castaways, buried treasure and even a little bit of science.

Editorial Review

Andrew L. Kaufman has, after 40 years of work, written what will be the definitive biography of Justice Benjamin Cardozo. Cardozo was one of the premier judges of the first half of this century, serving on the New York Court of Appeals as Chief Judge, the most influential state court in the country, and then on the Supreme Court. On the New York Court of Appeals, Cardozo rewrote tort law with his stamp; his characterizations of negligence, proximate cause, and assumption of the risk still dominate law throughout the land 60 to 80 years after his original decisions.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Biography
Professor Kaufman worked on this impressive biography of Benjamin Nathan Cardozo for over 35 years. There were times when one began to wonder if it would ever appear.Well, it did and it was worth the wait. This is a long book, running some 700 pages including notes. At times, it seems almost too detailed--but it is a wonderful resource for anyone interested in Cardozo, the development of American law, and the Supreme Court.Kaufman strikes a nice balance between BNC's private and public lives, his 18 year service on the New York Court of Appeals and his 5 or so terms on the Supreme Court, the biographical details one expects and the legal doctrines and opinions that he authored. Along the way, the author covers BNC's significant books; his involvement with the ALI; his work in developing key contract and tort concepts on the Court of Appeals; his long period as Chief Judge there; and his methods of working and drafting opinions while on the New York court.
5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary insights into an American judicial hero
Andrew Kaufman has written an engrossing account of the life of BenjaminCardozo, a judicial hero of the first third of the century. This bookshould prove especially useful for first-year law students, who read manyof Cardozo's most important decisions in their contracts and torts classes. But even non-lawyers with an interest in the legal system will find ithighly readable and informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars An honest and insightful biography of a pivotal figure
Professor Kaufman presents his subject, first, as a man, establishing the personal background that shaped Cardozo's work as a judge.Kaufman then offers an insightful examination of the judicial work of Judge and Justice Cardozo, analyzing the development and maturation of Cardozo's thinking regarding the many legal principles which have become mainstays of American jurisprudence. The biography is well suited to lawyer and non-lawyer, and provides an extraordinary social history of the shaping of the American common law that governs our lives and liability today. This biography is a must-read primer for all soon-to-be law students, who will find in it an invaluable guide to the principles they are preparing to study.Professor Kaufman's honest analysis of the talents and faults of his subject is much to be commended. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not worthy of the subject
The best part of the book: Introduction by Lisa Bloom, Allred's daughter. We got a glimpse of the woman behind the media. Second best was Chapter 1, Allred's own all-too-brief biography.
1-0 out of 5 stars When does this marketer ever work?
This woman stands many inches taller on tv than she is in real life. She is a jesse jackson female counterpart and wannabe and wants to insert herself into every dispute. She forces herself into every controversy and conducts herself like ruth westheimer. She makes no sense and is always poised to give a liberal and feminist slant to every controversy and when there is no dispute she is ready to produce one. An agitator and media hound. What a joke! She should write a cookbook and perhaps she could mix up something other than the listeners and readers' brains.

4-0 out of 5 stars allred is a legal thriller.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very useful treatise on perceptions of justice
Professor Tyler of U.C. Berkeley has written a lucid and useful treatise that explores one aspectof why people obey the law: their perceptions of the procedural and substantive justice of thelegal system. As this issue is multifaceted, Tyler examines various aspects of a wide variety of perceptions and opinions within his sample. The data he presents are extremely valuable in explaining, not why people break the law, but the equally important (or more important) question of why they usually do not.His conclusions emphasize the importance of public perceptions ofsubstantive and especially procedural justice and how people's interactions with courts and the police shape those beliefs.Certainly, Tyler has not explained "why people obey the law," as that would be a gargantuan task (although the book is not small).Rather, he explicates one extremely important aspect of why people obey the law, and for that Tyler has made a valuable contribution to students of the law, politics, and psychology. This book will be a classic in the law and society movement, if it has not already become one. ... Editorial Review

The title of criminal defense lawyer Roy Black's first book alludes to the renowned legal dictionary, and the reference is appropriate: Black is beyond a reasonable doubt the definitive defense attorney. Considered among the best advocates for the accused in the United States, he has had clients that included William Kennedy Smith and Marv Albert. But in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Black's Law Is An Eye Opener
Do you sometimes wonder why anyone could possibly want to defend the scum, the losers, the obviusly-guilty-because-the newspapers-said-so?Well, if you think that way you will find a very good answer in this book. Roy Black describes four different cases which seemed impossible to defend, yet he did and did it well. He lets you in on what it's like to be on the defense side of the aisle. His writing style is smooth and flowing and each of the cases was so interesting I found it hard to put the book down. For me this was one of those books you can't help but read fast because it's fascinating, yet want to read slow so it lasts longer. For any True Crime genre fan, this is a MUST read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Step by Step Understanding of Casework
I really enjoyed "Black's Law." He tells four different seemingly story-like narratives about four different cases. He discusses in detail every aspect of trying a case from research to voire dire. If you are interested in either legal strategy or just in a good story, you should read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Legal Education for all
A great book. Written by a expert in communication. Each case brought you into the defense, you believe in the actions brought forward to give not only a legal defense by our constitution but to see a inocent person never is incarcerated,if that ever comes to pass. I would hope Mr. Black will write more, he is able to take a very complicated subject and break it down to a laymans understanding. ... Read more

he's really not that bright. Go read Lon Fuller instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great essays. His other books are better.
Another reviewer noted that this is the best intro to Posner. It probably is. The essays here touch on legal reasoning, economics, philosophy of law, sexuality and many other topics, giving the reader a 'survey' view of Posner. Most books of essays, though, have a cohesiveness that I did not detect here, which is fine, so long as the intention is ONLY to get a sampling. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Law As Scalpel And Hammer
James B. Stewart's "The Prosecutors" is a worthy follow-up to his solid first book, "The Partners," another take on the real-life practice of American law in the 1980s that focuses this time on those the state relies on to penalize lawbreakers.
4-0 out of 5 stars Insider Prosecution
The Prosecutors is a good book. It is very insightful about the world of U.S. Attorneys--both the legal and political aspects--and their prosecution of white-collar crime. Stewart chose several good case studies to analyze how prosecutors work and also highlight the political reality of their position. The book paints an unflattering picture of the Reagan Administration's handling of crimes by large businesses, including the machinations of Rudy Guliani who is made out as a machiavellian up and comer. This is a good book for people interested in law and specifically prosecution, but hopefully it does not frighten people away from such a career path. It is also has some interesting history of the Reagan Administration and Guliani, but it is fairly dated information now and doesn't have the same impact it would have when the book was first published. All in all, I would recommend this book and encourage aspiring attorneys to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars James Stewart knows how to tell a story
This is an excellent collection of true life vignettes about prosecutors and the cases they work on. The chapter discussing Rudy Giuliani's tenure in the justice department during the Reagan administration (written long before he became mayor of NYC) is particularly interesting because it portrays him in a very unflattering light. An entirely different perspective on the man the country has come to love after 9/11.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's about introspection and being practical
This book is for lawyers who think they want change.Because of the laser-point intellectual focus required to launch a successful legal career, many lawyers find themselves at year 10 and wonder how they ended up "there."Self-examination is a luxury few in big firms afford, but it's critical to establish and maintain the right career path.1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money!
This has to be the worst career advice book ever written.I bought this book expecting a practical guide on what needs to be done to make a successful job transition as an attorney.Instead the first portion of the book deals with do I really want to be a lawyer? After 4 years of college, 3 years of law school, clerking experience and at a minimum of one job as an attorney, I think that most lawyers know whether or not they want to be an attorney. If they have any questions, there are many books out there to help them decide what they "really want" to do with their life. The advice given is simplistic and not always very realistic for those attempting to change jobs, if you are trying to leave you current employer on good terms. I was very disappointed in this book. It was a waste of money to buy it. It was a waste of time to read it. Another warning, this book is an ABA publication, which may explain it's utter uselessness. The ABA publications on legal careers are some of the worst I have ever read.If you are looking for good 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Grace

3-0 out of 5 stars Well Told Story About An Intriguing Subject But Analysis Could Be Better
Eat What You Kill:The Fall of a Wall Street Lawyer is the story of John Gellene, the only attorney to ever go to jail for making an incomplete disclosure of "connections" to creditors and parties in a bankruptcy case. While it is clear that Gellene committed an ethical lapse, the fact that he was prosecuted, convicted and served time is truly surprising. Others have failed to disclose much more and have suffered much lighter consequences. As a result, the question of why this particular case resulted in a prison sentence rather than a slap on the wrist is really interesting, particularly to lawyers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Spellbinding and hugely educational
Hats off to Professor Regan for his prodigious research and painstaking, vivid recreation of the saga of a prominent lawyer's startling rise and fall --an all-the-more remarkable achievement given Gellene's refusal to cooperate in this project. This is an amazing look-behind-the-curtain as to: how large law partnerships reward and penalize their producers and non-producers; how complicated bankruptcy negotiations unfold; how investment bankers and vulture investors exploit weakened corporations; how a brilliant professional succumbed under pressure to career-ending ethical blunders; and much more. An extremely valuable reading experience for practioners and students of law and business that deserves to be a best-seller.

I've been personally involved with Yellow Page ad design for 30 years. I know from experience that the information in Kerry's book will practically guarantee your success in this unique medium. I've been preaching very similar Yellow Page design strategies and have enjoyed increased response rates for my clients of 30% to 800%. Buy it once, read it a few times, then sit back and get ready to answer lots of phone calls. This is by far the most intelligent and valuable Yellow Page advertising manual available.

New York lawyers know this - and I have been a lawyer for over twenty years, it is so clear that yellow page advertising is a extinct medium. If you don't have the page priority nor the money to spend on the right books - your'e dead in the water past page five. It's the Internet that really counts today not the yellow pages....

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It is interesting, and helped me a lot when it came to my studies. It is something every office worker should have.

These are just a few of the reasons students studying to become a legal secretary or paralegal continue to rave about this book.3-0 out of 5 stars Average Rating
This average book for the most part is good to use as a general reference. It is somewhat outdated and it uses California law for most of its examples so if you live in another state, you'll need to find out what the law is in YOUR state. The best parts of the book are the practice exercises at the end of each chapter in which you use the disk provided. This gives "hands-on" experience. ...
