5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book for Any Lawyer
This book is a great tool for any lawyer, but particularly a neophyte to visual persuasion, to learn about how to persuade with PowerPoint and other computer presentation tools. It is a treasure trove of examples to use and to stimulate thinking about how to persuade visually.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Guide to Legal Presentations
The authors have outdone themselves with this edition. It is comprehensive and accessible, whether you are a novice or an expert. The CD provides excellent step by step instruction for the lawyer who wants to learn techniques to create the most effective presentations. But the book is more than just technical tips. The discussion of legal concerns, as well as basic rhetorical theory, makes this book an essential resource for lawyers and legal assistants who want to reach jurors (and judges) who are much more media savvy today. Most decision makers are not primarily aural learners, and in the days of CSI, the ability to highlight the most compelling evidence is not just a luxury.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for Any Lawyer
Even though this book is 17 years old, it remains in the first rank.More extensive than Steven Stark's, more engaging than Garner's, Goldstein and Lieberman's book is my first choice for any lawyer seeking to become a competent writer.Part III, the longest part of the book is entitled, "Making Your Prose Serviceable," the part one must read. But particularly worthy is the Part following, "Making Your Prose Memorable."Even though few of us will ever attain that goal, it's worth trying.I can't think of another book in the genre suggesting such a lofty purpose.I appreciate having some guidance.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than good writing advice.
Are lawyers professional writers? Could a law office benefit by adopting some methods of a book publisher or newspaper office?5-0 out of 5 stars my favorite book of all times
i first purchased this "intriguing" book when living in chicago where i worked as "foreign patent specialist" and "senior tech writer/editor". When we moved to Las Vegas, after my retirement,I panicked when I realized that I've lost this book. Just open any page andsavor the words in this book. Bravo to the authors. I wish I could shaketheir hands for a well-written and intriguing book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Truly awful
A resume is tricky to write, at best. You have to highlight years' worth of accomplishments at different jobs and possibly even different fields in a page or two.Attorney resumes can be particularly complex, as many of us worked for some time at a first career before coming to the law, and need some way to handle that time of our lives in a legal resume. Further, many attorneys have both in-house and firm experience, and will want to tailor the content of their resumes accordingly. In addition, the type of resume a corporation might want to see may be a lot different from what a law firm expects to see.
1-0 out of 5 stars Should be entitled "Simple Resumes for Top Attorneys only"
This is probably the worst book I've ever reviewed on the subject.Sure, it's great if you are an attorney from a top 10 school at the top 20% of your class, but still are not bright enough to figure out the most basic of tactics.True, the gatekeepers for the elite jobs are not authorized to think outside of the box, and therefore resumes based on these tips will appeal to them; on the other hand, there is no reason that these attorneys should have to put more than a cursory search together as these employers will be chasing them.As to the rest of us presumably unqualified professionals, the book is of absolutely no relevance.Based on this, I presume that the authors (legal recruiters) are likewise only interested in finding jobs for the papered best and brightest.

2-0 out of 5 stars Best Resumes for Attorneys
This should be entiled "Best Resumes for Attorneys at the Top of your Class, (As for the rest of you, we're not concerned)." Hey, everyone knows law is extremely competitive, but shouldn't there be something inthis book for someone not in top 20% or above.Every sample resumeinvolves being at the top of your class.Obviously, I didn't graduate inthe stratosphere but I am far from being alone, 80+%.Also, I've been ableto eke out a decent practice despite this.I've used this book for thepast few years and it is helpful because there is a large selection ofsample resumes and cover letters to choose from, but I've often chuckled tomyself when doing so, because for having such a large selection of examplesfor so many areas of the law, it just deals with the "elite."Itnever addresses anyone who might be below this standard. That is why Ithink that its use is somewhat limited and not realistic. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Horrifying
One of the worst ethics books I have ever read. It was extremely difficult to finish this book, mostly because the arguments made in one section is refuted in the other. He doesn't make sense most of the time. His reasoning is weak at best. At one point (Chapter 7), he refutes an argument because it is "silly." No further elaboration! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The remarkable true story of the first female United States Supreme Court justice
The second volume of the "Women's Biography" series, Sandra Day O'Connor: Justice In The Balance is the remarkable true story of the first female United States Supreme Court justice. From her humble beginnings on a cattle ranch, where she learned important lessons about hard work, self-reliance, and the greatness of the outdoors, to her studies at Stanford University, her struggle to find a job as a lawyer in an era when law firms did not want to hire women, the responsibility of juggling her career with marriage, politics, three children, and breast cancer, and her nomination to her judicial post of prestige by President Ronald Regan. A solid biography of the "quiet feminist", written for readers of all backgrounds, and especially recommended for school and public library collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Relate to (for me)
As a son of Irish immigrants who grew up in Sunnyside, Queens and made something more of myself, I can appreciate all the struggles, as well as all the characters Ed Hayes brings up in his book. It brings back a lot of good memories and makes me miss some of the action and strong hustiling personality types that my adopted hometown of Seattle is sore lacking.
5-0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT LAWYER STORY
Ed Hayes exposes himself and one might think that the machine gun style of the book is fantasy but it doesn't do justice to the man himself. His dedication to his clients is legendary and he spends every working moment thinking and working for them. Having shared some of his adventures but as a cop,I found that he loves cops. If it wasn't for the fact that he would not have been able to support his interesting lifestyle he would have been one.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gripping tale of the City
Leave it to Ed Hayes to make a probate dispute unfold like a murder mystery. But he does that, and much more.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Particularly New or Exciting . . .
The reviewer from NY summed up this book pretty well.Overall, the book does not offer significant tips to the average law school applicant.4-0 out of 5 stars I was going at this ALL ALONE...until I bought this book.
I began on my endeavor of applying to law school after having spent 2 years working in human services and social work.No one I had ever known before had ever gone to law school, my parents knew no one, and I had lost all of my acquaintances and advisors at my University after the time I had graduated. This gave me an inside look towards strategies in applying to schools. This also gave equal attention to recommendations, essays and personal statements as well as GPAs and LSAT scores (for those of you, like I, who would like to draw attention FROM the latter mentioned items!)5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to understand...
If you want to understand exactly how the admissions decisions are made (in terms of committee, admissions deans, etc.) than this book is for you. I agree with the previous reviewer that for filling out specific parts ofthe application other books are better, but the author really shines whenit comes to how admissions works and what qualities will be sought out(intellectual muscle, moral character, diversity - whatever that means). Good book for insight, poor on specifics. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for legal libraries
Skadden is an excellent history of both the rise of the modern law firms as well as one of those firms which epitomized that movement. Lincoln Caplan uses an indepth analysis of the practice, politics and people of Skadden Arps to analyze how and why law firms, which had traditionally been small parterships have since grown into businesses as large and competitive as many of the corporations they represent. The story is very well written and insightful and it is obvious that Caplan did extensive research both inside the firm and in legal libraries. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in legal history and it is a good insider's guide to people who do not have experience in a law firm, but are considering working in one or are simply curious what goes in them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Doodle Joe
There's usually something important to be learned by the absent minded habits of the great and powerful. This book includes one about Joe Flom:He likes to fill themargins of his notes with tightly wound, intricate geometric patters that are uniquely his own design. The author doesn't read much more into it, but there's no reason we readers can't.According the author, Mr. Flom can also be a little brusque in private.5-0 out of 5 stars Lincoln Caplan is a phenomenal legal historian.
Mr. Caplan has gracefully provided readers with an exquisite portrait of the life and times of a twentieth century law firm.Compelling and balanced, the book joyfully tracks the highs and lows of a group of"young turks" who have defined what it means to be a lawyer incorporate America.I am grateful to Mr. Caplan for the time he put intothis project, as it gives tremendous insight to law students as to how alaw firm operates and what the culture of a law firm embodies. This bookis worth reading, worth printing and well worth recommending.Caplan'sTenth Justice, his recording of the Office of Solicitor General isbrilliant as well.Joe Flom and Sheila Birnbaum and the rest of theSkadden crew can rest easy as the bard who records their triumphs andtribulations does so with zest and intelligence. ... "Divorce Lawyers at Work offers a rich, vivid account of the changing nature of family law practice. It will be invaluable to those interested in understanding the legal profession and the operation of the legal system, warts and all, in one of the most emotionally fraught legal arenas. It also would be an excellent companion to anyone suffering the travails of a divorce--and an accurate (if sometimes unflattering) mirror for the lawyers who represent them." --Richard L.
