Warning "Diatribe" coming
This book would have been fine had it been published 20 years ago before the saturation of critical theory. Now it just feels like a wounded discourse from someone who went to grad school in the 60's.

Fairly valuable for getting the big picture
As a first year law student, and with finals quickly approaching, I was desperate for a book that would help me make sense of it all. I found this book to be pretty helpful. It made me take a step back from what I was studying to get a good look at the overall picture, which is really important. Finals are still about two weeks away, but I'm feeling more confident now. Don't get me wrong... this book is in now way a substitute for test preparation, but it does help you understand why somethings are the way they are.

It is really fundamental
This book has helped lawyers from other countries to understand in a better and general way the American legal system.It has an overview of areas such as criminal law, torts, contracts, commercial law, immigration,labor, among others.I recommend this book as an introduction to the legalsystem for non lawyers or for foreign lawyers. ... Extra Material for Studying
LSAT 180 is interesting in that it is supposed to be more difficult than regular LSAT questions but is also intended to help improve your LSAT taking-skills.The questions are difficult but all they aren't perfect.
Get Real PrepTest Questions
As one of the other reviewers pointed out, the questions used for prep in this book are very different from the actual LSAT questions that you'll be tested on.Not only are the style of writing and the format of the questions different in LSAT 180 than on an actual LSAT exam, but also, an equally persuasive case could be made for more than one of the answer choices in some of LSAT 180's Kaplan-created questions.The same isn't true on an actual LSAT exam (or is very rarely true) because once the subtleties of actual PrepTest questions are mastered, there is almost always a clearly superior answer.On LSAT 180, I found myself unconvinced in several instances by Kaplan's explanations as to why their preferred answer choice was superior to one of the other answer choices available.This never happens on a real LSAT PrepTest once you have grasped the stimulus and the question stem, with all their subtleties. ... Text for class
This is actually our text. I am currently enrolled in a master's program. I would say that it is our professor's depth of knowledge and her personality that makes the class enjoyable, but the text is a great reference and certainly a place to start gaining insight into the pitfalls and legal aspects of ethics in the field of psychology. If you are in a class make sure you check out YOUR state's laws concerning responsibility and informed consent!!!! If you ever thought it might be fun to be a lawyer, this should thrill you! Name of the game...CYA!!!!

It's Ethics-not too exciting -but they need a NEW proofreader.
I am reading this book for school of course - certainly NOT for pleasure. It's less than exciting, but more due to the topic at hand, than the material.What I have noticed, however is the abundance of typos throughout the book. I have never seen to many errors in a text book in my life - kind of funny really.I guess they need to get a new proofreader for the next edition.In Ch. 3 alone I've found 4-5 words already -and I'm not even done w/the chapter yet.

Nonsense
This book is what happens when zealots with a political agenda try to mask their actions as being compassionate.There is deliberate twisting of Hague convention rules of warfare to fit their marxist utopian vision (NY defense lawyers, surprise surprise).Fortunately, judging from the other reviews here, they seem to be preaching only to the same, small clueless choir.I imagine that since the author is personally involved in the matter he has financial reasons to publicize the "torture".

The Torture Papers:Road to Abu Ghraib
This is an excellent resource for any serious scholar or researcher dealing with the laws of war, the Iraq War or torture issues.It is a broad compilation of original source material, mostly post 9/11; with its depth (over 1200 pages), it may be too much for the casual reader (if so, try Torture and Truth, by Mark Danner), but for serious research, it is essential.
Making Men Scream in Our Name
This comprehensive and current compilation makes clear that our government has sanctioned practices not only outlawed by international conventions against torture, to which we are signatories, but which discracefully echo the techniques of tyrants through the ages. The documentation will make it impossible for Americans to claim that they didn't know what is being done in our name. Still Relevant After 100 Years
Francis Wellman first published this book in 1903 and despite the passage of over 100 years, the book is nearly as relevant then as it is today.
Not just for lawyers
Putting aside the overt racism contained in this book first published in 1903, this book, which was reading material my wife picked up at the University of Virginal School of Law, gives us an entertaining and eye-opening vista into the Ciceronian art of winning trials at the courts of law.Written primarily by several prominent New York City attorneys, many of its sections, joyfully reveling in the destructive power of masterfully twisted perceptions fed to lay jurors, are egregious far beyond any dispassionate, plain-spoken Machiavellian ethics.In addition to its lessons on the value of perception, The Art of Cross-Examination serves up a menu of time-tested techniques for extracting truth from liars, ridiculing expert witnesses, the use of anger, sympathy, empathy, humor, taciturnity, loquaciousness, etcetera that trial attorneys steeped in Cicero should find quite useful for years yet to come.
Lots of pages with little to offer
I read this book after reading McElhaney's Trial Notebook.After reading the first book this one read so slowly, with so much wordage that I found it impossible to read.Not worth the money or the time. ... Read more

A gripping tale of constitutional theory and law
This book is great! Truly, Mr. DeLeo is a master on the subject. I picked this up on a reccomendation from a friend and couldnt put it down! I especially loved the briefing on the "circle-square effect". Never before have I been so titilated by a the law in all its glory. Mr. DeLeo takes what would otherwise be a bland subject and breathes life into it in a manner that is like unto a gripping thriller similar to any good John Grisham novel! Be sure to pick this today! Very helpful book
This book was recommended by a professor since the final grade was based upon a final paper. I wish I had this book since 1st year. Great for people who plan to "write on" to law review as well as write any kind of legal scholarly paper. Highly recommend this.
