1-0 out of 5 stars Dont buy from amazon
Attn all students! Amazon promises to send books by a specific date then changes the dates without your consent. Trying to get a refund is a nightmare. Be prepared to get stuck without the book and still get the bill. Customer service is outsourced to India and is no help even if you could understand them. 4 wks and counting and still no promised refund. This not the only time this has happened. The issue is not with the seller it is Amazon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good material---but Outdated
The title of my review says it all: the text and the study guide were fine at the time they were published in 1996, but this is 2004 and a great deal has changed in California's court system from the vantage of civil procedure. The publisher should have updated this book no later than 2000 when the courts were administratively unified; additionally, local and state rules of procedure have been dramatically altered to place greater emphasis on ADR (alternative dispute resolution) and the rules regarding Fast-track litigation have likewise undergone significant changes.5-0 out of 5 stars Next best thing to the law library
I bought this book in preference over several other self help law books I examined after I fired my lawyer and went in pro per. Lots of really helpful, accessible, thorough, and friendly information. In fact it was sogood that I promised myself I would write its first online review. Youwon't get much help on how to act in court, though, as only attorneys cando that and not paralegals, who it was written for. But don't listen to meI'm not an attorney. My lesson in all of this was to stay out of court inthe first place. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars California Landlord's Law Book is a must!
I have been a landlord for 12 years. Every few years I purchase a revised version just to be sure that laws haven't changed that I should know about. This book is a must if you have rentals in California. It is very easy to understand, it has all the forms you may need on CD and can be referred to quickly when questions come up. I feel I am a better landlord because of this book. I have also loaned it to my friends when they felt that their landlord had not be treating them fairly. They also found it very helpful. I wouldn't be without it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful and practical handbook for Landlords
I read through the book before renting my place, and it provided me with very useful tips on the legality of various aspects of renting one's place. It also had templates and forms which were very handy, in drawing up a lease, issuing a receipt or generating a checklist. I would recommend this book for any landlord, whether you are renting out one house or multiple.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information for first time California Landlord
This was the only book I needed to become a landlord in California. With the included forms on CD, I was able to easily create a lease for my tenants and feel confident that I was doing everything legally. I read the relevant sections of the book and will keep it on hand if any rental problems show up. I am very satisfied with the book selection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An informative reference guide to the complex laws and regulations concerning neighborly disputes and intricacies
The newly expanded and updated fifth edition of Neighbor Law: Fences, Trees, Boundaries, And Noise by attorney and mediator Cora Jordan is an informed and informative reference guide to the complex laws and regulations concerning neighborly disputes and intricacies. Deftly covering laws concerning such issues as water runoff and flooding, trees that hang over property line, problems with neighboring businesses, noisy neighbors, unclear boundary lines, blocked views, high or unsightly "spite" fences, dangerously deteriorating fences, dangers to children, and so much more, Neighbor Law is a complete and thorough compendium ideal for non-specialist general readers wanting to know (and be able to enforce) their rights as a property owner in a neighborhood of property owners. Neighbor Law is very strongly recommended for anyone searching for a "user friendly" informational documentation of all the rules and regulations concerning proper neighbor responsibilities and an understanding of what can and can not be lawfully done when a conflict arises between neighbors.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Paralegal Reference!
This is the first "for Dummies" book that I have purchased and I must say it is great for the beginning paralegal student as well as a paralegal graduate students. This book is a great refresher! When I purchased the book I was able to recap legal research and writing courses that I had completed a couple semesters ago. I was in the process of taking business law and ethics and this book helped me to understand the basics of the two courses I was about to explore as well as refreshed my memory on past courses.I will refer back to this book as a reference. This book really does cover EVERYTHING THERE IS TO KNOW about the paralegal profession!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good enough for me
Barron's "Dictionary of Legal Terms" is a solid text. When I asked a law friend of mine which law dictionary I should purchase he told me that "Black's" was the best law dictionary out there. However, it is rather expensive at eighty or so dollars. Even the pocket version of the text is at least twenty dollars. So I sprang for this law dictionary at about eight dollars.
5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for everyone
Legal terms presented in a way that can be understood by all.Very helpful information in section-"KEY TO EFFECTIVE USE OF THIS DICTIONARY"

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this dictionary!
I bought this dictionary 4 years ago and since then it has been invaluable to me in getting through law school and the bar exam. My copy is so tattered and worn out, I'm thinking of buying a new one to replace it. I highly recommend it over Black's and others that have traditionally been regarded essential for law students and lawyers. Too often with the other legal dictionaries, you look up a word, and then to understand the given definition you end up having to look up additional words. Not so with this book--it lays out legal definitions in the most simple and straightforward manner possible. For many terms, it even gives short hypotheticals to illustrate the term in its proper context.

Few philosophers have made as much ofa splash with a single book as John Rawls did with the 1971 publication of Read more

Reviews (4)

4-0 out of 5 stars A great work of political philosophy
Rawls has done a marvelous job condensing the theory first presented in his massive A Theory of Justice into 200 lucid, succint, beautifully-argued pages.5-0 out of 5 stars Culmination of a half century's work on political philosophy
Whether one agrees or disagrees with Rawls' theory of justice, almost all contemporary moral and political philosophy takes place in its shadow. If not for A Theory of Justice, generations of grad students would still indulge in tired debates over the meaning of Kant's categorical imperative and whether analytic philosophy merely defines the words we use to talk about philosophy. Luckily, this was not the case and we now have this book that expresses the most refined exposition of Rawls' views on justice to date. Attempting to address the criticisms leveled by Sandel, Walzer, Habermas, and others at his initial theory, Justice as Fairness integrates the concepts of "reasonable pluralism" and "stability for the right reasons" (the core concerns of Political Liberalism, although not in those words) articulated in articles scattered throughout journals over a span of three decades with the comprehensive philosophical doctrine in A Theory of Justice. Whether he succeeds in fully rebutting their objections is certainly up for debate, but Justice as Fairness should be essential reading for anybody interested in the philosophical underpinnings of a liberal, property-owning democracy.5-0 out of 5 stars Profound
Rawls set himself the difficult task of accomplishing for political philosophy what Kant attempted for moral philosophy; developing a systematic logical rationale for an intuitively attactive body of thought that raises this body of thought to new levels.Kant attempted to find a rational basis for the Pietist Christian ethics that he grew up with; Rawls attempts to find a rational basis for modern democratic polities. Both Kant and Rawls struggle not merely to rationalize existing arrangements and beliefs but to extract the best features of these intuitively attractive systems, to place these features on coherent and rational foundations, and to logically derive important new features of these systems from the described foundations.Rawls made this project his life's work. His output includes his magisterial 1971 book, A Theory of Justice, which set out most of the basis of his theory, the subsequent Political Liberalism, which introduced important qualifications into his scheme, and a large number of essays.Justice as Fairness is an attempt to summarize his views at the end of his remarkably productive career. This book is the best way available to enter Rawls's work in its final state.Having said that, I have to acknowledge some substantial drawbacks of Justice as Fairness.Rawls is not a gifted writer and this book derives to a large extent from lecture notes from one of his courses.Rawls has apparently been ill in recent years and this book was not completed by him. This is doubly unfortunate because Rawls's extended thoughts on some the issues discussed would be worth reading. The last couple of sections of the book are relatively sketchy, reflecting his inability to flesh them out.Since this book is an effort to abstract thousands of pages of prior writing, it is still rather dense.Still, because of the importance of Rawls's ideas, this book is very welcome and the reading public owes a debt of gratitude to Erin Kelly, the editor of this book.Read more

Oh thanksgiving day, I am thankful for this book and the great help it was for me during the past year.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book on the Subject
This is the only book you will need to help you apply to law school. The author covers everything from personal statements to Loan repayment programs at top schools. The author focus on top twenty schools but the information should be helpful to anyone. The best part is hundreds of quotes on all subjects directly from the deans of admissions at top schools. It includes quotes from the deans at every school in the top 15 in the U.S. News and world report rankings and a number of other institutions including Boston College, George Washington, USC, UCLA, and Boston University. This is particularly helpful if you are targeting one of these top schools. There are executive summaries at the end of the chapters if you don't have time to read the entire book. This work will help anyone taking the application process seriously to maximize their chances of getting into the best school they can.

4-0 out of 5 stars best for people who are still deciding whether to apply
This book certainly has some helpful information, but the author spends a good bit of time trying to help the reader make sure that he/she wants to go to law school and wants to be a laywer. He does some motive-chekcing (Why do want to go to LS? Are you sure you're doing it for the right reasons? etc). This may prove helpful for those who are still unsure, but not for those who have already thought through these questions.

1-0 out of 5 stars The book is subpar
I bought this book as a primer reference to patents. What I got was a dictionary of words. This book pretty much is a dictionary without a lot of explanations.Really basic terms also.A lot of basic paraphrasing instead of actual text from the 35 USC manual.

5-0 out of 5 stars Legal Information without the Legalese
This book is easy-to-use and highly detailed with an appealing, bulleted layout and many illustrations that helped to answer most of my basic questions about the four categories of intellectual property (copyright, patents, trademarks and trade secrets).I took a graduate-level library science course on the legal aspects of information and borrowed several books on IP from the library. This Nolo Press book was the one that I kept coming back to and wound up buying.I was glad I waited for the updated 7th edition, which now includes an index. The book is divided into completely logical sections on definitions, statutes, forms and an overview, all of which make this book a joy to read. The text is written in plain English and the entries are cross-referenced and other resources are given. This is a legal book written by lawyers, but the legalese is edited out and only very useful information remains. If you need one basic legal reference book on IP, this is the one you'll keep reaching for.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
This has a lot of detail and organized information that a patent applicant might use. However, it does not provide an overview quite as well as something like "Patents for Beginners" (PfB). For patent applicants, I would recommend getting both books, but someone like a jurist or an expert witness might be better served by PfB. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable resource!
As a student who wants to work for agencies to prevent crime on the internet, I wasn't sure how much "Family Law and Practice: The Paralegal's Guide" was going to do for me.It turned out to be an incredible resource, not only of how the system works, but also of the workings of families in suboptimal conditions.5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Students and People Interested in the Law
This is a wonderful book for both students and people interested in family law.It covers everything from the history of family law to current events, such as Roseanne and Tom Arnold's marriage. The cases are more like soap operas than the dry cases one usually associates with law. These cases will inspire great conversation in the classroom and will hold the students' interest from start to finish. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A convenient concise OVERVIEW
This is quick 85-page overview of the patent process. It provides the key steps, requirements, and definitions in very plain terms (almost in the same style of language as the IRS's 1040EZ instructions). However, it steers clear from giving ADVICE.If you need advice, try Patent It Yourself, from Nolo Press.
3-0 out of 5 stars Government publication that needs a new edition
This is not the first place to start if you're interested in the patent process. The law is dynamic and this book was out of date years ago. There are many other books out there that will outline the basics in a much more reliable way.Look for a book that will discuss World Trade Organization provisions and other international aspects of IP law - otherwise it's too limiting.Never choose to file for a patent application yourself.Use references to educate yourself on the process and then if you want to pursue this expensive process (which can become more expensive if you make an error) find a registered agent or attorney.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction
This book offers a simple, straightforward interoduction to patent law. If you are starting from scratch, this is a good place to start. There isn't much "how to" in this book, so it's probably best for someone who plans to work with a patent lawyer or service. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Thanks to TV cop shows, most Americans can probably recite the Miranda warnings, but do they know when the warnings do--and do not--apply? Tort reformers cite the $2.7 million in punitive damages a jury awarded a little old lady in Albuquerque when the cup of coffee she had set between her legs spilled and scalded her. These crusaders against "excessive" damage awards do not usually note that the trial judge reduced the award to $480,000, or that the coffee was 20 degrees hotter than competitors' coffee.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Law 101: Everything You Need to Know About the American Legal System
This is a great introduction to the different fields of law. This uses recent cases that show now only how the legal field works, but how it has run amuck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good so far
Before my first year classes started I had read most of the parts that were applicable. The reading definitely gave me some sort of foundation and framework for understanding all the information they throw at you in law school. Some of the reading is a little dry, but compared to some Marshall opinions you'll read for class, this book's a breeze.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heavily academic in dry, concise, and reasonable format
For what it worth, the book is intended for classroom study. It is dry, dense, and concise with heavy emphasis on the history of law and its role in society. The author has relied on few anecdotes to demonstrate how the law is applicable to dispute resolution. Those linger along many chapters and require the reader to follow closely each anecdote in order to discern the applicability of the law.
