4-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Wills & Trusts Students
I usually don't use hornbooks, but I was stumped with all the Wills and Trusts material.I initially got the Examples & Explanations book, which was a HORRIBLE MISTAKE.It lacks even the most basic concepts.I then went for Emanuel's, which was keyed to our textbook, and it was a dream come true, especially the mini briefs. ... This book was nice and simple.A good summary of what you need to know. The section on agency was great.I think he got a little carried away in the partnerships section when he compared RUPA and UPA.I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants a comprehensive summary of the law of agency, partnerships, and unincorporated entities. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars average
This book contained a few moderately useful lists, but for the most part contained little of particular value. It is too superficial to be of much use to a large firm merger, and bears little relevancy to the needs of a small firm merger. The most useful part of the book is not the book itself, but the accompanying forms disk, which can help provide a little structure to your thinking when evaluating and planning a law firm merger.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too short and superficial
Too short and over priced.I bought this book in March 2005 for the list price, now that the price is reduced, it might be a better deal.Still expensive for a paperback of only 208 pages, almost half checklists and exhibits. It is authored by Hildebrandt International, which provides consulting advice to merging law firms.I felt I was reading a promotional brochure for the consulting service. There is some useful insight but at a common-sense level, not so much that is penetrating insight.Obscure topic, so if you want information you might have limited choices, hence my purchase.Another book (not purchased by this reviewer) Law Firm Mergers : Taking a Strategic Approach is also by Hildebrandt; why do they have two books on the same topic? ... Editorial Review

If you take it step by step, the United States legal system is not nearly as intimidating as it is reputed to be. With a little expert guidance from a couple of attorneys (Stephen Elias and Susan Levinkind), you can learn what's in a law library and how to use it, how to seek and understand statutes, regulations, and cases, how to explore online resources, practice your legal skills in the library, and even write a reputable legal memorandum. It's not as easy nor as immediately gratifying as buying an ice-cream cone, but with a modicum of patience, dedication and average smarts, you can research and understand the law without years of legal training and without emptying your bank account onto some lawyer's shiny desk.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Legal Research: How To Find & Understand The Law
Awesome!Very thorough and easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars The very best!
I am a legal assistant and I use this book constantly! It gives you great strategies to work more efficiently while getting better results. I had no idea how many legal resources there are online! This book tells you which sites are the most reliable and easy to use. It also demystifies annotated legal codes, case digests, state reports and many other research tools. But most importantly it is extremeley well organized and easy to use. I wish that I had discovered this book when I was a student!

5-0 out of 5 stars A simple, direct, straightforward, "user friendly" guide
Now in its tenth edition, Legal Research: How To Find & Understand The Law by attorneys Stephen Elias and Susan Levinkind is a simple, direct, straightforward, "user friendly" guide to the extremely complicated and tricky topic of doing legal research. Individual chapters address how to properly frame questions in legal categories and efficiently look up relevant laws and case history. Legal Research is emphatically not a substitute for a consultation with an attorney; however, a close reading followed by judicious use of its fact-finding methods is a superbly effective way for non-specialist general readers to prepare themselves before sitting down with a billed-by-the-hour consultation with a licensed attorney or paralegal researcher! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but Flawed
The strength of this book is that it provides a comprehensible introduction to intellectual property - focusing on patents. If you want to learn something about intellectual property without wading too deep into lawyerspeak - this book may interest you. In addition to patents - trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets are discussed; other aspects of intellectual property are waved at. The last chapter provides dated coverage of intellectual property as it relates to the Internet - mostly focusing on business method patents. This is interesting from a business perspective but the authors do not seem versed in the technical aspects of E-Commerce. Laches and estoppel are demystified and the bookpresents what looks like solid advice on how to enforce your rights against a group of infringers (attack the weakest one first). There are clearly divided sections (making the frequent pauses that I occasionally made between readings convenient), key ideas are highlighted in an attractive manner and charts and graphs are well presented.
4-0 out of 5 stars A clear guide to IP
This book is both concise and complete in covering the major aspects of IP.Using language and examples that are easy to understand, I found this book to be a quick intro to the fast-growing world of IP.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another masterstroke for these authors.
Cross-examination. The mere utterance of these words can strike fear in even the most seasoned testifying expert. Never testified before or just starting out in litigation consulting? The prospect of cross-examination can provide more consternation, self-doubt and sleeplessness than a teenage first date. And, with good reason. The purpose of cross-examination is for opposing counsel to find any little chink in your testimonial armor and exploit it to discredit you, your credibility, your honor, and ultimately, your professional viability.Still don't have your attention? 5-0 out of 5 stars Blackmun's Papers
Please be aware before you pick up this book that it is based almost solely on the personal and professional papers of Justice Blackmun, which he left to the U.S. archives for analysis five years after his death.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not so much a Biography....
What Greenhouse has done with this book is taken a Lifetime Justice Blackmun's papersand condensed it into the "Best of"highlights.
3-0 out of 5 stars Paragon of Liberalism
Towards the end of the Civil War, Lincoln wrote that "I claim not to have controlled events, but confess plainly that events have controlled me." The same might be said of Harry Blackmun's life. Greenhouse however demonstrates that Blackmun also controlled events as well. The author writes that Justice Blackmun "was to be linked forever to a cause that had scarcely been his own." Greenhouse's book portrays Blackmun as incredulous at first as the nation reacted to Roe v. Wade. In fact, Blackmun initially wrote that the reaction to Roe would be "an unsettled period for a while" not fully realizing the ramifications of what he wrote. Yet, throughout his years on the Court, Blackmun came to the realization that Roe, like it or not, was his legacy, and as the Rehnquist court took over, he defended it to his utmost in Webster and Casey.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference
It is difficult to say whether the contentious atmosphere that currently exists regarding the legal opinions of the Supreme Court is greater than any other time in the history of the United States. There have been times, especially during the Civil War and World War I when the Supreme Court raised the ire of many a citizen. Some of the "activist" justices, as some of them are now called, could perhaps be designated as "activist light" if compared with some of the justices of the past. This book gives ample evidence for this comparison, but also gives information on a wide variety of legal issues that the Supreme Court has had to deal with throughout its history. It would probably not be read from cover to cover, but instead serves as a general reference for those readers who are not and do not intend to become legal scholars, but are curious as to the reasoning patterns deployed by the justices who sat on the Court. Readers who are approaching this subject for the first time will find many surprises about the Court, both in the opinions expressed by the judges and in their personal histories and backgrounds. It is fair to say that legal opinions are guided predominantly by the historical context in which they are put forth, and this claim seems to gain more substantiation as more articles in this book are read and studied.
5-0 out of 5 stars Massive tome on the Supreme Court.
_The Oxford Companion to the United States Supreme Court of the United States_(Kermit Hall, ed.) is a massive tome containing a vast swath of information: cases, traditions, theories of constitutional interpretations, historical events, and biographies of all of the Supreme Court Justices. It has the same material (word for word) as Kermit Hall's _The Oxford Guide to United States Supreme Court Decisions_ but this is much more worthwhile reference work because it contains more contextual material than the cases themselves. This book is by no means exhaustive, but it provides a very informative overview of what the Supreme Court has been up to for the past two hundred years and the very different personalities serving on the body.

5-0 out of 5 stars A worthy companion
As the nation prepares to welcome the seventeenth Chief Justice, this book is a wonderful guide to the processes of the least 'media-exposed' branch of the federal government and its highest institution, the Supreme Court.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great learning tool
I bought this book for a legal assistant class and I enjoyed it.I learned a lot. It's hard to learn computers from a book - but not this one.The book comes with software and has tutorials and exercises that accompany the software. My class also liked the fact that there are tons of practical applications for how computers are actually used by practicing paralegals and legal secretaries in the book. Also, when it comes to litigation support -one of the most difficult legal computer applications to master - it was fantastic. It comes with three different litigation support programs, including Summation.Summation is fairly involved to learn and the book, tutorials, exercises and software did a good job of teaching this to me.I am confident now in my ability to do basic litigation support. The chapter on using the Internet to do legal and factual research was also excellent.

4-0 out of 5 stars I would definately buy this again!
This book is essential for anyone working in a law office.Computers are used in nearly every aspect of working in a law firm. The book is huge - nearly 700 pages - and it covers every main type of program used in a law office. It comes with software, and lots of exercises and I thought it was very easy to read and straight forward. It covers hard topics like litigation support and Access databases in a way that I could understand without totally going over my head. The book covers both entry level and advanced topics. For example in the word processing chapter the Word tutorial had 7 lessons that got progressively more difficult, starting with basic word processing and ending with mail merges and creating tables of authorities.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
I think this is a fabulous book.It comes with demonstration versions of 5 legal software programs including three litigation support programs, a time and billing program and a case management program. There were a number of in-depth, hands-on exercises for each program, so I really got to learn about each type of program by using it.Also, although I have used Access, Word, Excel and Powerpoint before, I liked the fact that there were in-depth exercises for learning legal applications for each of these programs. This is a very practical book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Elegant as silk, sharp as a scalpel
Kenji Yoshino's book manages a difficult feat: it is simultaneously elegant and hard-hitting. Yoshino, a professor at Yale Law School, blends memoir and legal history as he charts the changing attitude of American society toward homosexuality. Formerly, gays were treated as if they had a deadly disease--if they were not willing to change, forcible means such as lobotomy and electroshock therapy were at hand to "convert" them. Next, they were left alone as long as they were willing to hide their sexuality. The riots of Stonewall and the AIDS plague were watersheds in changing this attitude, as gay men and women demanded to be recognized as such AND treated as human beings.
5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and much needed
Yoshino is one of the brightest stars in civil rights discussion. I found his book insightful and even necessary for any real progress to be made for civil rights for all people.

4-0 out of 5 stars What a career!
I found the personal coming out to his parents story very moving; it brought tears to my eyes.I also loved the epilogue and the story of the blue star. But, in between, what a lot of navel-gazing and counting of angels on the head of a pin.I'm a lawyer, but I admit I got lost in all the differentiations and attempts to focus the covering/reverse-covering analysis on each type of discrimination. Then, halfway-through, I learn he was only in law school in the 1990s.I've been practicing longer than that and he's the Harvard professor!(I realize that's a comment on me.)This guy has really carved out a self-referential niche for himself. ... I have only purchased this book tonight, yet not on Amazon.com.I actually went to Borders and paid full price.Reason being, I could not wait to get my hands on a reference book to help me conceptualize projects and cases that I presently deal with at work as a new estate and tax planning attorney.I hear about ABC trusts, GST trusts, Living Trusts, just to name a few, every day.Yet I don't have the slightest idea about the particular mechanics of many of these valuable estate planning and tax saving tools.
2-0 out of 5 stars Written in Legaleeze...got a better book for you
Read "Beyond the Grave, The Right Way and the Wrong Way of Leaving Money to Your Children" instead of this book or before you read this book.I bought both and gave up on this book after a couple chapters.Itwas a struggle to get through.Very dry, written like a tech manual, areal sleeper.Go read the reviews on Amazon for Condon's book beforedeciding which one to order.Trust me, you want the other book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars All Around Good Introduction To Business Law
Well written book that provides a good introduction into business law principles. Outlines complex concepts with case law that makes it easy to understand. A reccomended read for the pre-law students as well as a valuable reference for business owners.

2-0 out of 5 stars Condition of Text
The text was torn. The cover was horrible and it had so much writing in it. It was the wrong text. I typed the IBSN, why would that book show up. I was very disappointed in this purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Business Law Explained for the Intelligent Layman
I was given this book for free by someone who had used it for a college course and didn't want it. I couldn't believe the person wanted to throw it away. This book tells all the basics of business law. If you don't know anything about business law, read it. It is a good book for beginners. I know I will keep it for a reference book for a long time. I am starting my own business and I refer to it all the time. Not only does the book tells just about everything you need to know about business law, it gives actual descriptions of court cases to illustrate the points of each section. A very good buy & an excellent reference book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is THE book to read if you are Law School bound
I wasted my money on other books. The biggest waste of money was Law School Confidential. By Law in a Nutshell and don't waste your money on other books. It was terrific! It was even humorous.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy It, Borrow It, Just Get It.
The single best book that I have found which really does explain the study and practice of law, hence the title.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, not a must have
It is worth reading, but I believe that it should be read in addition to a couple of other books to prepare mentally for law school. The two others I went through are; How to succeed in law school (munneke) and The complete Law School Companion (deaver). ... Read more
