5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent International Law Treatise
Probably the best introduction to the topic for an American.Covers all important aspects of international law and explains historical and current U.S. positions.Very well written.I would have included Malcolm Evans' book in the treatise section of the bibliography, but now you have that information. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A excellent overview about Last century international law.
I think Martti Koskenniemi works is one of the few must read books of todays international law.
5-0 out of 5 stars An exuberant review of the history of the discipline.
Koskenniemi is certainly one of the most prominent international legal theorists of the world. In a extreme erudite fashion he is trying to show - especially since 1990, when one of his first books, From Apology to Utopia, was published - how inconsistent and incoherent international law is.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing revival of a dead letter
Before 1990, international law was a dead letter office. Its foundations post-dated a universal church and pre-dated the Enlightenment.5-0 out of 5 stars Allow yourself to be challenged, at least
Geoffrey Robertson is a passionate advocate of human rights - and (possibly paradoxically) of the ability to affect them within the system/s in which we try to enforce them. This book makes no claim to be a perfect history, but knowing Robertson's experience, we are better to hear his opinion and understanding than a dry history of the progress of human rights law itself. If you love this book, good.If you hate it, good. The idea is to make you think about it... and that is what Robertson is best at.This may be the only law history book you will ever read which will make you laugh and cry - occasionally at the same time.I read some other reviews of this and am saddened at their negativity - Robertson has personal experience most "experts" never have, and combines that with a wicked wit, enormous intelligence and a humanitarian heart. This is some book, and Geoffrey Robertson is some man - read whatever you can of his.

5-0 out of 5 stars David Takes on a Goliath Task
Geoffrey Robertson's "Crimes Against Humanity" is a thoughtful and thorough analysis of modern attempts at global justice.I have struggled with this issue for some time and have found most books of little help, perhaps because the amount of material to be digested is so substantial.Robertson does an excellent job of assembling, organizing, and presenting an extremely complex body of knowledge. There are many books on individual topics covered here and some readers would no doubt like their pet topics to have been discussed in more detail. The beauty of the book, however, is not in its detailed coverage of any single issue, but in it ability to integrate a large number of topics (e.g., the Lieber Code, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,The Geneva Conventions, Nuremberg, Truth Commissions, International Criminal Court, etc.).The author is able to show how these various issues are connected in a string of advances toward a global system of human rights -- advances that are admittedly glacial in their pace but advances nonetheless.Anyone who has tried to organize this vast body of knowledge can appreciate what Robertson has accomplshed.A fine companion to this book is Samantha Power's book "A Problem From Hell: America and the Age of Genocide."Taken together, these two books will take the reader a long way toward understanding international efforts at global justice. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars World History and Legal Regimes
World histories are extremely difficult to do because it requires the historian to make broad, sweeping assertions about many different cultures concerning which the historian can never be an expert in each.As a specialist in Islam, I for one was sometimes left deeply dissatisfied by some of the sections focusing on Islam. This, in turn, made me question the nature of the analyses on areas concerning which I have no indepth knowledge such as in Spanish and Portugese empires.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great general resource but already somewhat out-of-date
There is a lot of general information contained in one easy to navigate location.I do recommend it highly, especially for one who is just beginning the adoption process. The only problem is that things are changing so fast, that even though the book was recently updated, it is already somewhat out of date.

3-0 out of 5 stars Extremely informative, but poorly written
I recommend this book as it offers more information specific to Russian adoption than you will find in any other book. The author adopted two children from Russia himself, and he is an attorney, so he is informed about the process. He researched thoroughly for this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Make this book your first if adopting from Eastern Europe
I cannot begin to say how helpful this book has been in our adoption process. I am sure that we are several months ahead of where we would have been had we not had this book as a resource. All of the information that you want to ask your adoption agency but forget to ask, plus questions you don't even know to ask are answered in this book. Don't let the size of the book overwhelm you, Maclean has such a fun writing style that the book is easy to pour over. I highly recommend this book very early in the process just to help with the initally paperwork, but if it isn't bought that early it still has loads of information for any stage of the process. Maclean also references many other books and websites for specific concerns through-out the book. This book is worth every penny! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars *****
A fascinating book with what seems to me a well balanced telling and analysis of the intellectual evolvement of certain activist leftists of the hippy generation. I didn't agree with everything in it. (Anyone who calls those critical of Clinton's sexual peccadilloes "sexual Neanderthals" hasn't read the paperback edition of Christopher Hitchens' NO ONE LEFT TO LIE TO with its rape chapter. Or, if he has read it, is disturbingly dismissive of the evidence Hitchens relates.) Berman not only has ingested tons of information, but has analysed it in this book with insight, and relates it with clarity and momentum. He's sort of liberal Tom Wolfe, not just educating you and giving you insights, but doing so in a page turning fashion. I liked this book so much I immediately went out and got Berman's TERROR AND LIBERALISM, that I just started reading tonight.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Maturation of a Generation of Naive Idealists.
Paul Berman is an unusually fair minded observer of the world political scene. That allows him to do justice both to the idealism of the generation that made the 1968 student "revolutions" and its failings. He charts the development of 1968 street fighter Joschka Fischer to becoming the first Green to be a Minister in the German government. Fischer endorsed NATO's intervention in Kosovo against all his earlier principles.Yet he refused to endorse the intervention in Iraq.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent intellectual history; par for course for Berman
Paul Berman has written two interesting books in recent years. The first was the excellent TERROR AND LIBERALISM which looked at jihadic violence, its underpinnings in Islamic and Western philosophy and history, and the possibility of a humane, hawkish, antitotalitarian, liberal response to it. POWER AND THE IDEALISTS is an equally engrossing read that looks at the generation of 1968 (anti-Vietnam, anti-authority, anti-capitalist, very often anti-American protesters) and their evolution over time, especially in reaction to Entebbe, Kosovo, and 9/11. Suprisingly, many 1968ers evolved quite far. The emphasis here is on Germany, as the central figure under consideration is former German foreign minister and Green leader Joshka Fischer. This is an excellent, journalistic account of many arguments very pressing in today's political environment. All arguments are treated fairly and in more than just a single dimension. ... Read more
