The obscure international relations world of international organizations and countries is generally visible and comprehensible to academics and human rights activists, but Anaya has written a seminal work in this area that provides sufficient background for readers to understand the relationship between indigenous peoples and human rights.This is extremely important reading for environmental activists interested in preserving the rainforest, defending sensitive environmental homelands of tribal peoples or understanding the question of access to international fora.Read more

a little dated, but...
I'll second the previous reviewer's call for an updated edition.Apparently the next edition, the 8th, is due for release in February 2008.

Time for an 8th Edition?
Akehurst's Modern Introduction to International Law provides a sound basis for understanding the United Nations, treaties, and international law. The only drawback to the book is that the material is becoming somewaht dated with its 1997 copyright.
Good book, good price
This book is the essential guide to international law. Not only does it cover important themes and treaties over every conceivable topic, it does so without too much legal jargon and too much dumbing down. It hits the perfect average reading level and provides citations to the primary sources from which statements are taken for further research and understanding. It is extrememly well organized. "On Lawfare": Short and Focused
In the Shield of Achilles Phillip Bobbitt has recently written on the mutual relation between law and strategy. In the realm of emergency, the distinction between the two becomes relatively thin. Bobbitt's book demonstrates that at certain times, strategic "imperatives" have generated legal regimes. A point that Bobbit has overlooked, however, is the use of law as a strategic instrument. This is what might be called, not so much the instrumentalization, but the "weaponization" of law. UN informative
For those that are curious about the UN, this book is very informative about the duties and various sectors of the UN.

Subtle but pervasive pro-US bias
The revisions contained in the third edition are the work of Lawrence Ziring, professor at the University of Western Michigan. Ziring is a not an obvious candidate to be writing what is designed to be a textbook on the UN.He has publicly supported U.S. policies which are contrary to the spirit and the letter of U.N. principles, including the `humanitarian' bombings in Yugoslavia and U.S. attacks on alleged terrorist camps in Afghanistan and the biological weapons plant (which later turned out to be a pharmaceuticals factory) in Sudan.Ziring is also a member of the Atlantic Council, a Washington-based think-tank with people such as Robert McNamara and James A. Baker on its board of directors.The Atlantic Council focuses primarily upon supporting expanded roles for NATO.Read more
