The author was a member of the American Prosecution staff at the International5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed, well balanced, well written.
This is quite a long book that gives a detailed exposition of the events of the initial 21 or so cases at Nuremberg. Taylor participated at a high level. He is a distinguished author and scholar. 4-0 out of 5 stars An Insider's look at the Nuremberg Trials

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book.... but not a international law bible
Ian brownlies'principles is a good survey of international law, but don't expect a full overview of international law. It lacks some deep exploration some parts, but well it is a principle book.
5-0 out of 5 stars The most authoritative, yet quite challenging for biginners
No doubt that this book is one of the most authoritative and orthodox textbooks in this field. With prolific cases and legal reasoning, this book offers a clear and profound understanding on "principles of international law," especially its Sources, Jurisdictions, and subjects, and basic theories thereof. A must have for those majoring in international law, I should say. 4-0 out of 5 stars but Brownlie says...
As mentioned by other reviewers, to even consider undertaking Jessup mootcourt competition, or any other major project in international law withoutfirst turning to Brownlie is to miss one of the most comprehensive texts onpublic international law. There are those of us who have comprehensivelysilenced arguments on a point of law with the phrase ' but Brownliesays...'. No international law collection is complete without this text. ... Editorial Review

Whether fought for commercial or strategic concessions or even moral reasons, whether little-known or well-publicized, America's "small wars"--against, say, the Barbary pirates and the rebellious Boxers--played a large part in the development of what historian Max Boot does not hesitate to call an American empire. All arguments to the contrary, Boot insists, America has never been an isolationist power; it has "been involved in other countries' internal affairs since at least 1805," when American marines landed on the shores of Tripoli, and it has "never confined the use of force to those situations that meet the narrow definition of American interests preferred by realpolitikers and isolationists." Closely examining the record of those small wars, which far outnumber major conflicts, Boot argues that Americans have a historic duty to deliver foreign nations from aggression, even to intervene in civil wars abroad, especially if the product is greater freedom--for, he writes, "a world of liberal democracies would be a world much more amenable to American interests than any conceivable alternative." Readers may take issue with some of Boot's conclusions, but they merit wide discussion, especially in a time when small--and perhaps large--wars are looming. Boot's book is thus timely, and most instructive. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Seeing patriot or blind nationalist?
We tend to think of undeclared police action wars to be a rather new phenomena of the mid 20th century for America. Perhaps it is so that we can continue to think of ourselves as a generally peaceful nation with a live-and-let-live attitude. We can look back at our history and see just a few declared wars and so think ourselves a relatively peaceful lot.Max Boot challenges those assumptions with example after example of wars waged by fiat of executive rather than declarations of war by congress of the people.Oddly, the author's conclusion is that overall this is a good trend that should be continued and encouraged once it has been acknowledged. He takes the approach that American altruism is unquestionable and therefore America as a force for good is unquestionable. On this assumption he builds the house of cards to justify America's use of power as necessary and good for its own national security since, he says, a world of liberal democracies would be much more conducive to America's well-being. How exactly liberal democracy can be expected to flower from the end of bayonettes is never explored or even questioned.
3-0 out of 5 stars Great subject matter-POV needs work
Loved reading about all these conflicts especially those you never heard of (or heard little about). The author admits that those involved may have exaggerated their actions but over all I'd say this is pretty accurate. The conflicts described from 1800-1940 were well done expect for some nonsense about making Haiti or Vera Cruz Mexico so wonderful until we left, I thought goals were to make places wonderful permanently.Or he thinks the attempt to help the Whites in the Russian Civil War was a "missed opportunity", forgetting that the Whites were disorganized & the Western powers weren't on the same page about what to do & who wanted to lose more men after the slaughter of WW1 anyway?
5-0 out of 5 stars Realists will love this book.
Boot laces together many vague, forgotten and often politicaly fuzzy conflicts and puts them all into a context that show the reader the workings of national power during interwar periods commonly refered to as "peace time".I read this during my thesis on small wars and insurgencies, and found it generally useful.

2-0 out of 5 stars Woof woof. Who is that howling?
Paul Williams has put out a book, with a big emphasis on sources and footnotes and a scholarly appearance. Professionally put together it seems. He warns that Osama has dozens of nukes within the United States already and that the "American Hiroshima" is coming soon.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Copy Should be Placed by Every US Front Door!
When you finish this book you will be depressed as hell and then you will realize that you ought to spend every waking moment enjoying life.Paul Williams writes well about the end of the world as we now know it and he gives great footnotes and a wonderful index for those who are into checking and rechecking.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Horror Story
I sat in stunned silence as I turned the final page of "Cry Rape," Bill Lueders' heart-rending story of a rape victim doubted, and ultimately tormented, by police. My 10-year-old son asked about what I had been reading, saying, "Is it a mystery?"
5-0 out of 5 stars The Madison Idea
Cry Rape is the story of a rape victim's victimization by the criminal justice system. It is a story about a cop who seems predisposed to "prove" rape victims liars, about a police department that protects bad cops, about a district attorney's office willing to further victimize the victim to protect bad cops, about judges willing to interpret the law in ways that protect bad cops and bad policies, about elected and appointed officials who stand behind the victimization, and (though only peripherally) newspaper editors who don't seem to care.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overall Review
I'm currently taking a course on the EU in which the professor gave us carte blanche to purchase our own books on the EU.I was delighted to find out that this book was written by a professor who understands what and how to communicate this information to students.Plus, since the writer is a British immigrant, he could incorporate the European perspective of the EU from first-hand experience as opposed to a vicarious one. This book was very good at providing background info (without harping too much on history) and bringing the reader up-to-speed with current events as well as personal thoughts on the EU's future.Kudos to the writer.Thank you very much.Your book was very helpful.Cheers! ...
