5-0 out of 5 stars Worth Buying
Thank goodness I didn't take the advice of "A reader" who only gave this book one star ("not very useful, July 30, 2003").
3-0 out of 5 stars Picture friendly but informative
The book has a lightweight appearance but there is good advice on negociating contracts based on years of selling inventions and what to look out for - this is where I think the book really wins.It explains contracts and how to get the best one.Later in the book, there is more rudimentary descriptions of the different types of design types and loads of links to both government agencies and independent advice bureaus. It also explains the history of Patents which I found informative and dots humorous and common-garden inventions used today. For such a legalistic thing to attempt to do, I think the book did a good job of making it reasonably clear.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's okay.
I am happy for the author for his successes, but... he knew people that could help him get his foot in the door. He really has no knowledge of how to help you get YOUR foot in the door, other than general comments on what he would do if he had not known anyone. I am slightly unhappy with the book because the reason I bought it was to get my ideas developed into tangible products. This book will tell you valuable info on what the terms are and helpful info on making a decision about how to proceed, but not enough info about getting to the decision makers of a company. You will be more knowlegable if you buy this book, but you still have a ton of research ahead of you, as the author doesn't help you by providing names and address of key personnel that can help you get your idea or invention shown. Some of you may still feel like "idiots" when you're done reading this book. (?) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Must Read for Inventors
If you have a patented or a patentable invention and have decided not to manufacture or market it yourself, but wish to license a company to do so, this book is for you. In fact, it is a must read. The book covers not only the licensing of inventions but the licensing of trade secrets and copyrights.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great guide to the licensing process
This book is very educational about how to go about the licensing process. It's very easy reading, not the technical boring style. The included software is a major plus! You can customize the included licensing contracts.5-0 out of 5 stars Like Your Own Licensing Attorney in a Book!
With this one creative work, Attorney Richard Stim has given the inventor lightening power [like the art on the cover shows] in understanding what it takes to license an invention. It's easy to grasp because it's written in layman's terms. He has graphs on the licensing process, with forms in the back of the book as well sample agreements. He's given the inventor the tools and formats for licensing agreements, non-disclosure agreements, option agreements, contract work, agency letters, etc. And, all these agreements are also on a disk which is included with the book. He's outdone himself. I can't say enough about what Richard has put into this excellent licensing course for the inventor. I believe that it not only helps the independent novice inventor, but is also a good reference for those who consider themselves experts. Even attorneys should find this an excellent addition to their legal library. I recommend it highly.Accolades to Richard. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a realistic overview of the business
Being a game inventor for over 25 years, I felt like I was reading my biography as I read this book.It is totally honest about the chances of selling a game to a game company (I don't do toys). However, it is also valid as it relates the stories of inventors regarding the satisfaction and passion the we derive from the creative process. It is well written and enjoyable to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE!!!
The authors take you into the innermost sanctum of the toy industry through colorful, informative interviews that span dozens of subject areas. The toy industry at its rip-roaring, zany, zappy best. All other books I have read about licensing concepts to toy companies pale when compared to this work. This is the book of record. 5-0 out of 5 stars Increase Your Confidence
The Toy and Game Inventor's Handbook gave me instant erudition about the arcane world of marketing and licensing inventions. Thanks to this book I have more poise, confidence and a sense of security when I approach potential licensees.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstandingly clear, usable and readable
Amazing: a book that delivers what it promises. But not only is this book clear-eyed, candid and full of practical advice, it manages at the same time to be both a breezy read and a compelling analysis of disturbing trends in intellectual property.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Please . . . It's a crucial little book
Bielstein manages both to demonstrate how complex the tangle of permissions is and to offer clear direction. Most remarkable, her lively prose transforms a potentially miserable topic into truly enjoyable reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blunt, informative, and a great read!
This book not only tells all, but also reflects humor in the telling of the ins and outs of intellectual property management. This author masters the art of presenting the facts concerning this complicated subject and uses great examples to illustrate the points she makes. Her photo captions say it all.In spite of the subject, this is a most pleasurable book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book is an EXCELLENT book for people who are creative or want to be creative
I am a student in college, and very interested in inventing. All my life I have been thinking up inventions and trying to figure out if I could do anything with them. This book taught me I can, and furthermore, I should. I bought this book last week, after reading the reviews, and can honestly say it is a great book! I read it in a few days, and it was easy and really great reading. It caused me to discover new ways of problem solving and creativity that I know will help me in many areas of my education, career growth--and most importantly--it caused me to discover new ideas as I was reading it that I had never considered. These ideas were NOT even a part of the book. The Authors did a excellent job at writing in easy to understand, yet very educational ways. I am happy to own this book, and encourage the Authors to keep going. I think everyone who considers themselves creative should buy this book, simply because of the innovation methods it teaches and the simple ways it teaches the reader how to think in new ways about solving problems!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for information about Patents, Copyrights, etc.
I bought this book less than a week ago and it was so informative about the entire process of searching, obtaining, and even coming up with new ideas that I simply could not put it down.I highly recommend this book not only as a future reference to patent seekers but to anyone interested in the process or learning where to find what with respect to patents, copyrights, trademarks and much more.I have submitted a few patent applications and the knowledge in this book would have been extremely helpful in each of those submissions.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Powerful GUIDE Book for Teaching All Ages How to Invent
I work with many Inventors in my daily job, and I have to say this book is one of a kind. The book discusses some of the most unique qualities of the minds of inventors, and some of the very extraordinary skills they are able to demonstrate. I have always wondered how these types of people think, but this book actually teaches me that anyone can think like this. It shows the reader how simple it is to create inventions, and then how to submit them once you have discovered them. What really struck me, as I was reading this, is that it caused me to discover an invention of my own, and then told me how to file it. It was almost as if the authors were guiding my thoughts as I read the chapters. I think this book is a great book and even has some techniques I will refer to over-and-over. As my own experiment, I even worked with my children on some of these techniques as we explored a new world of inventions in their own minds. I highly rate this book and suggest it to anyone curious about their own abilities to become an inventor. A GREAT book to read! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Understand
This is a great entry-level book. It's well-written with easy-to-understand case studies and pertinent examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete and Very Well Explained
Copyrights used to be so simple. The U.S. Constitution says: to promote the progrss of science and useful arts, by securing for limited times to authors and inventors exclusive right to their respective writing and discoveries. From there it gets a lot messier. For instance a book copyrighted and published in 1930 was under copyright for 28 years. If the copyright was not renewed it expired in 1958. But if in 1958 the copyright was renewed for an additional 28 years, or 1986. But the law was changed so that if the copyright was not renewed the book is in the public domain. But if it was renewed the copyright now goes until 70 years after the death of the author, or maybe 95 years after it was first published, or possibly 120 years after it was created.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highest recommendation for libraries and librarians
Published in a sprial bound format, Complete Copyright: An Everyday Guide For Librarians by Carrie Russell is a project of the "Office for Information Technology Project" of the American Library Association and is enhanced with contributions by thirteen specialists and experts in copyright law and its relevance to academic and public library systems. Color illustrations, highlighted passages, a dash of humor and situational questions enhance the basic study of American copyright law, making the information easier to assimilate. Covering modern-day legal issues and coverage especially as apply to libraries ranging from the concept of "fair use" to the "first sale doctrine" that allows the resale or donation of lawfully purchased or acquired books, etc. to issues specific to copyright in the digital age, and much more, Complete Copyright carries the highest recommendation for libraries and librarians everywhere in the rapidly changing twenty-first century.

Editorial Review

Copyright law is a complex field, and it's crucial for writers to understand what's entailed. Stephen Fishman covers what a copyright is, how it's created and protected, limitations and transfer of ownership, how long it lasts, and what copyright infringement is all about. There are chapters on copyright registration, copyright notice, and how to deal with errors or omissions. Fishman also wades into the issues of derivative works and compilations, works for hire, and jointly authored works. He also tackles the confusion of copyrights in the online world of electronic publishing; the book is worth its price for this chapter alone. Theappendix contains a variety of sample forms and blank forms and a PC-formatted disk of the same material. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Plagirism Problems
I hire work-for-hire writers to create story anthologies and have become increasingly frustrated by the tendency of many to liberally "borrow" the written words of others found via the Internet. This book's chapters on Copyright Infringement and Copyright in the Online World have been invaluable resources that I have used to educate both myself and my writers. The author has wonderful tools for assessing and evaluating similarities between two texts, a test for paraphrasing, sample legal cases and judgments, letters to send to copyright violaters, an examination of liability issues, and more.

5-0 out of 5 stars The principle of fair use defined and explained
Copyright For Teachers And Librarians by Rebecca Butler (Associate Professor in the Educational Technology, Research, and Assessment Department in the College of Education at Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Illinois) is a no-nonsense guide to copyright law. The principle of fair use defined and explained, the procedures one should follow when asking permission, the specific applications of copyright law, particulars with regard to copyright law and CDs, DVDs, videos, or television, and much more, including a sharp focus on how copyright law relates directly to the needs of teachers and librarians, all make Copyright For Teachers And Librarians a hands-on practical resource. An absolute must-have for any teacher or librarian not intimitely familiar with America's copyright laws, Copyright For Teachers And Librarians is also useful to general readers as it presents basic facts in a highly readible manner.

I loved this illuminating and thought-provoking book.Lessig makes a compelling argument against extended copyright laws and other issues that may interfere with creating new projects based on derivative works.
4-0 out of 5 stars Intellectual Property Rights & HIV/AIDS

5-0 out of 5 stars a fantastic read. well crafted - couldn't put it down!
i am a content creator myself (artist and graphic designer) and this presented issues of intellectual property, copyrights and file sharing in a proper perspective. lessig stays fairly moderate throughout, borrowing rally cries from both the left and the right. the reviewer who called him a "communist" has obviously not read the whole book. a person of such limited mental faculty probably had difficulty finishing it.
